My stomach rumbles again, caught off guard. Xander and the others turned their attention to me. 'What?' I exclaim, unable to contain my hunger any longer. 'We haven't eaten all day, and as you all know, I possess the stomach of a wolf. ‘
Janie, her ever-compassionate nature shining through, places a comforting hand on Xander's arm, soothing his growing frustration. 'Perhaps we should find some food and set up a fire. Then we can discuss our next option as a group,’ she suggests gently.
His exasperation softens at Janie's touch and words. Xander gazes into her eyes, a sense of calm settling upon him. I watch as his shoulders relax, a sigh escaping his lips. He nods, his resolve rekindled. 'You all wait here and start a fire. I'll venture back into the forest and return with food,' he declares, leaning in to kiss Janie's temple tenderly.
With a twinkle in her eyes, Janie chants the incantation for her Lifto Levitatious spell. As her words fill the air, magical energy envelopes the sticks scattered on the ground, lifting them from their earthly embrace. Imogen, Mister Kal, and I spring into action, catching the floating sticks mid-air with a sense of playfulness. Together, we form a towering pile with the bundles of sticks.
Janie unleashes a burst of fire from her fingertips as she shouts, 'Inferno Flamo,' igniting the campfire.
The flames eagerly dance and engulf the pile of sticks, igniting a warm, comforting blaze that illuminates our surroundings. A gentle breeze swirls around us as the fire crackles and releases its warmth, causing our hair to sway synchronously with the wind.
We lay back on the soft grass, gazing at the velvet sky strewn with sparkling stars. The vastness of the universe unfolds before our eyes, filling us with a sense of wonder and perspective.
Janie tilts her head. Her eyes fixated on me with curiosity. 'If we were back home right now, what do you think we would be doing?' she asks, her voice carrying a hint of longing for familiarity.
A playful grin spreads across my face as I reply, 'That's an easy one. We'd be pampering ourselves with facials, indulging in popcorn, and cuddling up in our matching pink bunny rabbit pyjamas for a movie night.'
Janie's laughter echoes through the night, her joy contagious. 'Yeah, probably,' she giggles, envisioning the cosiness and shared moments from back home but also enjoying the many new memories we are having in this fantastical realm of Felderia.
Imogen chimes in, her voice full of anticipation, 'Will I get one of your famous facials, Rose?'
A genuine smile touches my lips. 'Of course! When we finally make our way out of Felderia, one of the first things we'll do, besides concocting the reversal potion, is to have a glorious girl's night,' I say to them.
Suddenly, mischievous thoughts fill our minds. 'What if Xander wants to join us?' Janie ponders, mischief glinting in her eyes.
A burst of laughter erupts as we imagine Xander succumbing to the power of face masks and nail polish. 'Perhaps a facial might be just what he needs,' I tease. 'We can scrub away the glowering stares he gives me all the time and maybe even paint his nails. I think pink would be his colour,' I grin.
Laughter spills from our lips like a river of joy, momentarily sweeping away our worries and cares. But as the joy settles, a heavy cloud casts its shadow upon me. I sit up, my gaze glumly fixed on Imogen and Janie, their expressions shifting from amusement to concern.
'Rose, what's wrong?' Imogen's voice is full of genuine worry as she reaches out, her hand comforting as it rests on my arm. She draws closer, wrapping her arms around my arm and holding it close to her chest.
Janie's brows furrow, and she places her hand gently on my knee. 'Tell us, Rose. We're your best friends. We're always here for you,' she reassured me, her voice full of unwavering support.
A sigh escapes me as I take a deep breath, my eyes downcast as I absentmindedly fiddle with a strand of grass in my hand. 'I'm worried about Brad,' I confessed, my voice tinged with fear and frustration. 'His messages constantly haunt my thoughts, especially his threats to punish me for what I've done to him. He would have needed stitches for sure after I clawed his chest. The wounds were quite deep,' I tell them.
Imogen and Janie's grip tightens, offering comfort and strength.
'You know we'll never let him have a chance to be alone with you, Rose. We'll do everything in our power to protect you.'
‘But, what if you can’t? What if he does have the opportunity to do something to me? What then? I know you will all do your best to help keep him away from me. But he can manipulate his way to anything, including to me,’ I frown. ‘I just want him gone, and I want this pain I feel to go with him. To vanish, forever,’ I say with frustration and pain as I clench a handful of grass from the ground.
Janie shuffles closer to my other side, her arm drapes around my back, and Imogen wraps her arm around me too. Even Mister Kal steps closer and stares at me sympathetically. Even Mister Kal, sensing the heaviness in the air, drew near and gently placed his paw on my hand, offering his silent support and sympathy. I relish the moment, surrounded by the unwavering love of my friends.
With a triumphant smile, Xander returns from his hunt in the forest, bearing what appears to be a chicken carcass in each hand.
Imogen's eyes widen with surprise. 'I didn't know there were chickens in the forest,' she remarks, with disbelief colouring her tone.
Xander chuckles a hint of amusement in his voice. 'Although they taste like chicken and bear a resemblance to one after their feathers and fins have been plucked, they are not actually chickens. These are Fin birds,' he explains, unveiling the truth behind the forest's mysterious fowl.
Imogen's mouth waters at the memory. 'Oh, the Fin bird soup we had back at the Whimsywick Tavern was absolutely divine,' she exclaims, her taste buds tingling with anticipation.
Xander skilfully impales the two Fin birds onto a thick stick, preparing them for cooking over the crackling fire. Imogen and I eagerly take hold of each end, poised to cook the birds to succulent perfection.
Janie, always the resourceful one, can't resist adding a touch of her magic to the cooking process. With a mischievous glint in her eyes, she chants, 'Lifto Levitatious,' and the carcasses obediently hover above the fire, suspended by an invisible force.
A burst of laughter escapes Janie's lips. 'You're doing it the hard way,' she teases, her amusement filling the air. The levitating carcasses sizzle and roast, their tantalising aromas wafting through the night air.
I can't help but smirk, marvelling at Janie's magical prowess. 'I need to remember that you can do that,' I quip, appreciating the convenience and ingenuity of her spell.
