'You said you'd keep your hands to yourself,' I growl, my eyes narrowing.
Warrick tilts his head, a mischievous glint in his eyes. 'I also said I'd get you back home safely, not dead from recklessly falling off a cliff,' he smirks.
'Recklessly?' I argue, my ears flattening against my head. 'It's your fault for disappearing like that,' I huff.
'It's your fault for following me,' he retorts. 'Clearly, you didn't follow me just to hold my hand. Unless you've had a change of heart?' he teases, his voice dripping with suggestion. My tail stops swaying and stiffens.
Blushing, I stammer, 'Of course not. I'm here to ensure you fulfil your end of the bargain and find the blossom fox,' I lie.
Warrick circles me like a predator, his gaze hungry, making my insides twist and turn. I shake my head, remaining silent.
'So, it's not the bond pulling you to follow me, to be with me?' he questions, his tone filled with intrigue.
Rolling my eyes, I feel sparks as I press my hands against his bare chest and push past him. 'Don't flatter yourself, Warrick. I've already told you I'm not interested. My focus is solely on getting rid of these ears and tail,' I assert, with determination.
In a matter of seconds, Warrick transforms into his majestic wolf form. His ebony fur glistens under the sunlight, and I have an undeniable urge to pat him. However, I quickly catch myself, recalling the need to maintain restraint when it comes to physical contact. Still, the whimper that escapes Warrick's throat tugs at my heartstrings, making it even more difficult to resist.
Without a moment's hesitation, Warrick turns and sprints towards a muddy puddle nestled amidst the swaying grass. With a mighty leap, he splashes into the puddle, rolling on his back with sheer abandon, relishing the sensation of the cool mud against his fur. I can't help but admire his playful antics.
I shout at Warrick with exasperation and amusement in my voice. 'Warrick! What are you doing? We're supposed to be hunting down a blossom fox,' I growl, trying to maintain a stern tone, even as the corners of my mouth twitch with a hint of a smile. I pick up his discarded trousers, trying to understand the complexities of his wolfish nature.
Emerging from the muddy puddle, Warrick struts towards me, his eyes holding a mischievous glint. His posture conveys a silent challenge as if daring me to scold him further. I raise an eyebrow, warning him with a firm tone, 'Don't even think about it.'
But Warrick remains unfazed. His tail flicks playfully, sending an arc of mud cascading down my clothes.
‘Warrick!’ I shout, my voice carrying through the air, filled with frustration. His ears perk up at the sound, his wolfish instincts triggering an immediate response. In a swift motion, he pivots on his hind legs and takes off, a streak of ebony fur vanishing into the distance. Without hesitation, I propel myself forward, my feet pounding against the ground as I chase after the mischievous wolf.
Chapter 13
The wind whips against my face, tousling my hair, adding a sense of urgency to my pursuit. Warrick darts effortlessly through the grassy meadow, his ebony fur a blur as he darts through the patches of sunlight that filter through the trees.
‘Wait up!’ I call out.
With each stride, my heart pounds in sync with the rhythm of my footsteps. The world around me blurs, my focus solely on closing the distance between us. Warrick glances back, mischief glinting in his eyes as if taunting me to push my limits, to embrace the thrill of the chase.
The grass beneath my feet brushes against my ankles, tickling my skin as I navigate the uneven terrain. The surroundings transform into a blur of vibrant colours in a breathtaking display.
‘Warrick!’ I repeat, the name escaping my lips like a fervent prayer, an invocation of connection. I can almost taste the thrill of catching up to him, of standing shoulder to shoulder, united in our pursuit of adventure.
As my strides lengthen, I can feel the exhilaration building within me, a surge of adrenaline coursing through my veins. The distance between us narrows, and a glimmer of triumph flickers in my eyes. It's just a matter of moments before I reach Warrick before our paths converge again.
In that fleeting moment, a smile dances upon my lips. I continue to run, driven by the thrill of the chase and the anticipation of what lies ahead. With every beat of my heart and breath that escapes my lips, I am propelled forward, a force of determination and resilience.
‘Warrick!’ I shout again, my voice echoing across the landscape. And as I push myself to the limit, the world around me fades into a blur, leaving only the sound of our footsteps and the rustle of the wind.
Covered in patches of dirt, Warrick's coat bears witness to his wild escapade. Sensing the need for cleanliness, he darts towards the nearby river, his stride swift and purposeful. Without hesitation, he leaps into the clear waters, causing a cascade of droplets to burst forth in every direction. The water envelops him, washing away the dirt and grime.
As Warrick emerges from the glistening river, droplets cling to his ebony coat like tiny, shimmering diamonds in the embrace of sunlight. With a playful, almost choreographed shake, he sends a spray of water droplets soaring into the air, where they catch the golden rays, creating a mesmerizing spectacle.
Warrick shifts into his human and lies down on the grass, basking in the warmth of the sun's caress. I turn to hide my blush and throw his trousers in his direction. I go to the river's edge, the rippling water reflecting the azure sky above.
Kneeling on the riverbank, I dip my hands into the cool embrace of the flowing current. As I wash away the remnants of mud from my clothes, a scent envelops me—an intoxicating blend of sandalwood, patchouli, and musk. Before I can turn around, I feel a surge of energy on my back, igniting sparks that dance along my spine. With a playful shove, I'm plunged into the river, gasping for breath as water envelops me.
