The day unfolds with Janie, Imogen, and me venturing through the woods, carefully picking various berries from different shrubs. Xander and Orelious had taken it upon themselves to educate us on which berries were edible, which were poisonous, and which held medicinal properties. Throughout the day, my thoughts drift to Warrick and what he is up to since his absence. Yet, a conflicting mix of emotions in my heart kept telling me I shouldn't worry or care. When he finally returns with the setting sun, our eyes briefly meet, but I quickly avert my gaze, unable to bear the pain reflected in his eyes.
As we gather around the fire in silence, waiting for the darkness to deepen, Warrick breaks the stillness. 'It's time,' he declares, assuming the lead. I position myself directly behind him, eager to embark on the quest to capture a blossom fox.
Janie and Xander conjure a soft blue sphere of light in their hands, subtly illuminating our path. We've been navigating the woods for hours, the air growing colder with each passing moment. I notice that we have reached the northern edge of the woods as the snow-covered peaks of the Silverpeak Mountains come into view.
Suddenly, Warrick halts abruptly, and I collide with his back, gasping at the surge of sensations that courses through me. Without hesitation, he pulls me in front of him, pressing me against his bare chest and muffling my startled gasp with his hand. I can't help but wonder if he, too, feels the electric sparks that ignite between us. This warmth and tingling sensations are foreign to me, far removed from anything I ever experienced with Brad. For the strangest reason that I cannot comprehend, I feel a sense of safety in his arms. Before I can dwell on it further, the scent of honey, nectar, and sweet berries wafts through the air, permeating my senses. A collective gasp escapes the others behind me.
My eyes widen as I gaze into Warrick's mesmerising midnight blue eyes. There's a glimmer of despair within them as he holds me tighter as if trying to savour this moment of holding me against his chest in his arms. Slowly, he removes his hand from my lips, which long to utter a plea for the return of his touch.
'It's the blossom fox, isn't it?' I whisper.
Warrick nods with a tinge of sadness and gently turns me around.
About fifty feet before us is the rare majestic blossom fox. Its slender, agile body is made from the bark of magical trees, adorned with green moss, foliage and orange blossoms that trail along its body. We watch quietly as it blends in seamlessly with its surroundings, amongst the trees and plants, moving silently and swiftly. I’m completely mesmerised by what I am seeing. I don’t notice Warrick’s eyes boring into me, taking in my reaction to the fox, until a tear of joy escapes and rolls down my cheek. Warrick’s thumb wipes the tear, the sparks, pulling me from my trance, and we gaze into each other’s eyes.
‘Are you sure this is what you want?’ he asks me.
I slowly nod, ‘yes,’ I whisper.
Warrick closes his eyes momentarily, concealing the pain my response brings him. After a few moments, he opens his eyes again, his gaze steady. 'Then you'd better get your flower,' he says, his voice carrying a sad tone.
I face the fox once more, taking a deep breath to steady myself, and then launch into a full sprint with every ounce of strength I possess. The moment the fox catches sight of me, it darts further north, triggering a surge of adrenaline through my veins. My heart pounds as I hurdle over logs, leap across boulders and manoeuvre through the dense trees with incredible speed. I'm gradually closing the distance between us, with Warrick keeping pace right behind me. The others trail along, struggling to match our lightning-fast rhythm. The fox shows no signs of slowing down, and I soon realise that we've ventured beyond the boundaries of the witching woods, now running across a vast field of knee-high grass.
I chase the blossom fox relentlessly, my feet pounding against the earth until we reach the edge of an ice-cold lake illuminated by the moon's soft glow. The fox abruptly halts in the middle of the lake, seemingly sensing a danger beyond my presence. I slow down and observe the crystal-clear water, only to be jolted by the sight of bones scattered beneath the surface. A skull resembling that of a human sends a shiver down my spine, hinting at the presence of a fallen warlock, witch, elf, fae, or wizard.
'Rose, you need to get out of the water now,' Warrick urges, his voice laced with urgency.
'There are skulls and bones...' I stammer, my voice trembling.
'There are many skulls and bones in these waters, but if you wish to prevent your own bones from joining them, you must get out,' he warns.
As if in response to our conversation, the fox whimpers and scurries back toward me, its fear evident. But suddenly, water swirls around the fox, lifting it into the air like a water tornado. A surge of imminent danger engulfs me, and I turn to flee into Warrick's outstretched arms. However, before I can reach safety, I'm ensnared within a whirlwind of water, entrapping my body within its aquatic grasp.
'Rose!' Warrick's voice pierces through the chaos.
Orelious, Xander, Janie, Imogen, and Mister Kal finally catch up. Their faces contorted with horror as they witness my predicament alongside the captive blossom fox trapped within the watery vortex.
Suddenly, bubbles emerge in the space between the fox and me, and a woman of ethereal beauty emerges from the depths. Her hair, a dark green cascade of delicate seaweed tendrils, frames her face, while her sapphire eyes gleam with a curious spark upon noticing my pointed ears and tail. Her gaze has a mischievous glint as she ascends higher, revealing scales of vivid blue beneath her navel. Her beauty is captivating, and I entertain the thought that she might be a mermaid. However, as she draws nearer, I realise that her body is that of a snake below her stomach. My throat tightens as I gulp, sensing an aura of enchantment and danger that surrounds her.
