Cursed To The Alpha

Chapter 75

Ch. 75 / 135 Dec 16, 2025

After a serene hour of riding, we stumble upon a clearing adorned with a weathered stone well, its moss-covered walls standing as a testament to the passage of time. We dismount our stags, drawn to the well's intriguing allure.

'We should refill our water pouches,' Janie says, reaching for the rough-hewn rope that dangles from the well's depths. With a firm grasp, she pulls on the rope, the rhythmic creaking of the pulley system echoing through the clearing. A bucket emerges, brimming with crystal-clear water, shimmering like liquid diamonds under the sunlight.

'Great idea, I'll fill mine first,' Imogen says, leaning forward to fill her leather pouch. The bucket drops a foot before she can fill it. Janie giggles as Imogen gives Janie a stern look. 'I'm just tricking. Go on, fill your pouch, Imogen,' she says.

However, as Imogen leans over further, Janie can't help herself and loosens her grip on the rope again, causing the bucket to drop another foot. Imogen falls headfirst into the well, a yelp escaping her lips. The bucket plunges back down, splashing water everywhere.

'Oops,' Janie says, with a regretful gaze as she brings her nails to her lips with worry.

Reacting swiftly, I lunge forward, reaching out to catch the handle, winding the bucket back up with Imogen clinging to it as she resurfaces. Janie and I struggle against gravity's pull, her saturated form drenching us both, as Xander watches with a smirk. With a final heave, Imogen emerges from the well, shivering from the cold and stands before us, dripping and bedraggled.

A momentary silence hangs in the air as we take in the sight of Imogen, her soaked form standing amid the clearing. Her clothes cling to her body, creating a watery cascade that drips onto the ground. Her hair, once neatly arranged, now hangs in disarray, adorned with droplets that glisten like liquid stars.

Janie's eyes wide with amusement and concern can no longer contain her laughter. It bursts forth, filling the air with its infectious joy. Imogen joins in, unable to resist the absurdity of the situation. Laughter echoes through the clearing.

'Look on the bright side, Imogen. At least it wasn't the privy you fell into,' I say, bursting into laughter.

Xander, his stoic demeanour momentarily broken, grins mischievously at the sight of Imogen.

We resume filling our pouches with water and collecting sticks while Mister Kal pounces through the grass.

‘Inferno flamo,’ Janie says, igniting the bundle sticks on fire. ‘This will help you dry quicker,’ Janie smiles at Imogen.

As soon as Imogen is dry enough, we mount our glowhorns and continue our journey.

As we approach the edge of Moonshade Forest, a sense of wonder fills the air. Towering ancient trees stand as guardians, their trunks adorned with gnarled bark, intertwining roots spreading like hidden secrets beneath the rich soil. Shafts of sunlight pierce through the dense foliage above, illuminating the forest floor with patches of light and shadow. Each blade of grass sways gently in the breeze, with the rustling leaves overhead. The air is thick with the earthy scent of moss and damp soil, carrying with it a hint of floral sweetness.

Glimmers of vibrant shrooms dot the landscape as delicate flowers bloom in hidden nooks and crannies. The melody of unseen creatures fills the air, their soft chirps and melodious songs blending into a harmonious symphony that serenades our entrance into this realm of enchantment.

Moss-covered rocks and fallen logs provide resting places for woodland creatures, their presence hinted at by the rustling of leaves and the scurrying of tiny feet. Anticipation courses through my veins as I realise today might be the day I finally lay my hands on the elusive blossom fox flower. With each beat, my heart echoes the excitement that consumes me. Stepping down gracefully from our majestic stags, we grasp their reins firmly, ready to embark on our daring expedition into the enchanted depths of Moonshade Forest.

In the company of Janie, Xander, Imogen, Mister Kal, and myself, we eagerly step into the mystical embrace of Moonshade forest.

As we delve deeper into the forest's depths, our eyes widen in awe at the astonishing array of creatures that grace our path. Among them, the fin bird commands our attention with its divine presence. Its pastel blue wings resemble delicate fins, gracefully gliding through the air above us, its snowy white feathers shimmering. We watch as it navigates beneath the shaded canopy of trees as if it were gracefully swimming through a boundless sea.

Janie becomes enthralled by the vibrant pattern of mushrooms that paint the forest floor in a riot of colours, from sunny yellows to vivid greens and fiery reds. Janie's eyes sparkle with fascination as she carefully examines each mushroom.

Xander crouches beside her. 'The yellow and red mushrooms possess flavours that would add a touch of magic to any dish.'

A spark of recognition ignites in Janie's eyes as she responds, 'Ah, the green ones! I recall seeing them mentioned in my spell book. They hold the key to unlocking potent enchantments in various recipes and potions.'

'That's right,' Xander smiles, 'but don't eat the black ones or the blues ones. They're poisonous,' he cautions.

'All right,' Janie nods, acknowledging Xander's warning.

Eager to gather these precious ingredients, Janie deftly retrieves a linen cloth from the saddlebag of their glowhorn stag. She carefully plucks the mushrooms one by one, ensuring their safe preservation within the cloth.

Xander approaches me, ‘Now that we’re here, you need to start sniffing and track down the blossom fox,’ he says.

'But with so many scents in the air, how will I know which one belongs to the blossom fox?' I ask him.

Lost in thought, Xander ponders for a moment, his hand resting on his chin. 'Ah,' he exclaims, 'my mother once told me that the blossom fox possesses the most captivating scent that entices and beckons you to follow.'

‘Sounds simple enough,’ I shrug, then close my eyes, allowing my senses to take over. Sniffing the air in different directions, I detect a tantalising sweet floral scent, causing my tail to wag excitedly. 'This way!' I exclaim, a surge of excitement coursing through me.

Taking charge, I swiftly drape my cloak over my loyal stag, signalling it to follow my lead. With each step, I intermittently pause to smell the fragrant air, ensuring we remain on the right path.
