The council chamber brimmed with unease as Kaelan entered, his powerful presence silencing the restless murmurs. His father, Alpha Veyron, sat at the head of the table, flanked by advisors with expressions ranging from discomfort to outright suspicion. Kaelan moved to the center of the room, his jaw set and eyes blazing with authority.
“What’s the meaning of this emergency meeting?” Kaelan demanded, his voice cutting through the tension.
Renfield, an elder advisor known for his cunning, rose from his seat, his wiry frame exuding an air of self-importance. “Alpha Kaelan, it’s about your mate,” he began, his tone carrying an edge of accusation. “There are concerns… whispers that her lineage is tainted. Rumors have surfaced that Mira’s mother was a witch.”
Kaelan’s expression darkened immediately, and he took a step closer to Renfield. “You’re basing this meeting on rumors?” he growled, his voice dangerously low. “You dare insult my mate with baseless accusations?”
Renfield met Kaelan’s glare with a calculated calmness. “These rumors cannot be ignored, Alpha. If there is even a possibility that she’s used sorcery to bind you, the council must investigate. The pack’s safety depends on it.”
Kaelan’s fist slammed onto the table, causing several advisors to jump. “Enough,” he snarled. “Mira is my mate, chosen by the Moon Goddess. She has no need for trickery, and I will not tolerate this slander.”
The chamber was silent, heavy with Kaelan's anger. Yet, another advisor spoke up calmly. "Alpha, what if we compromise? Let Mira stay as your mate. But choose a stronger Luna to lead with you. This would satisfy the council and protect the pack."
Kaelan narrowed his eyes and stepped closer. "No one else will be Luna while I live," he said coldly. "Anyone who questions Mira's place doubts my leadership. I won't allow that."
Renfield smirked faintly but spoke again, unfazed. “You misunderstand, Alpha. This is not about personal affront. It is about appearances and unity. A wolfless Luna… it may sow discord among the pack’s allies.”
“Appearances?” Kaelan spat. “Do you think I care for shallow optics over the will of the Moon Goddess? Mira’s strength lies beyond your limited understanding.”
Kaelan glanced at his father, Veyron, who had remained silent throughout the debate. Veyron’s expression was inscrutable, his hands folded neatly on the table as if observing a chessboard rather than his son’s leadership being challenged.
Kaelan’s voice lowered, becoming deadly calm. “Anyone who spreads these baseless rumors about Mira will answer directly to me. Do I make myself clear?”
Silence fell over the room, save for the crackling of the fireplace. Finally, Veyron’s deep voice broke through. “It is not about defying you, Kaelan,” he said. “The pack’s stability is at stake. But you have made your stance clear. Let us hope the Moon Goddess grants us wisdom.”
