Political Consequences

Ch. 12 / 99 Feb 16, 2026

Kaelan leaned against the heavy oak table in his private office, his hands gripping the edge as his royal advisor, Eamon, paced before him. The older man’s brow was furrowed, his silver hair catching the flickering light of the fireplace.

“You’ve created quite the stir, Kaelan,” Eamon said, his voice even but laden with concern. “The council… they’re not pleased.”

Kaelan’s gaze snapped up. “The council has no say in who I choose as my mate,” he replied sharply. “The bond is sacred. Surely they understand that.”

Eamon sighed, stopping to meet Kaelan’s glare. “It’s not about understanding, Alpha. It’s about power and perception. Choosing a wolfless mate undermines their image of strength and unity. They’re already murmuring about… alternatives.”

Kaelan’s fists clenched. “Alternatives?”

“They may push to annul the bond,” Eamon admitted reluctantly. “They’ll frame it as a necessity to protect the pack’s interests. If the pack council gains enough support, they could challenge your authority.”

The weight of Eamon’s words settled heavily on Kaelan’s shoulders. He had anticipated resistance, but not this level of defiance.

“Mira is my mate,” he said firmly, his voice carrying a dangerous edge. “I will not betray her for political convenience.”

“And I respect that,” Eamon said, his tone softening. “But you need to consider the long-term consequences. A divided pack is a vulnerable one. If you wish to secure Mira’s position, you’ll need to win the council’s trust.”

Kaelan paced, his mind racing. Mira's safety was crucial. Yet, he couldn't let her be used. "What do you suggest?" he finally asked.

Eamon’s expression shifted to one of contemplation. “You’ll need to show them that Mira is not a liability. If you can demonstrate her value, her strength… they may reconsider. But it won’t be easy.”

Kaelan nodded, his determination growing stronger. "I'll take care of the council," he said. "Mira's been through enough. I won't let their arrogance hurt her anymore."

Eamon's face turned grim, and he hesitated. "Then get ready, Kaelan. This is only the start."

As Eamon left, Kaelan looked out the dark window. Moonlight cast shadows in the room. He knew the upcoming battle would be tough, but he was sure of his decision.

Meanwhile, in her room, Mira also looked out the window into the night. She hugged herself, feeling the weight of her insecurities. She felt out of place, like a fraud in a world that wasn't hers.

A sudden knock at the door made her jump, and she turned to see Kaelan enter the room. His face was calm, but his eyes revealed the tension he was trying to hide.

"Is everything okay?" she asked cautiously.

Kaelan walked over to her, his expression gentle. "It will be," he said, his voice firm. "But there's something you should know."

Just as he was about to continue, a loud crash came from the hallway, followed by rapid footsteps. Kaelan's eyes narrowed, and he headed for the door.

"Stay here," he told Mira, his tone firm and commanding.

As he stepped into the corridor, he was met by one of his guards, who spoke quickly, his face pale. “Alpha, the council has called an emergency session. They demand your presence immediately.”

Kaelan’s jaw tightened. “And what’s the reason for this sudden urgency?”

The guard hesitated before answering. “It’s about… your mate, Alpha.”
