Love and Duty

Ch. 17 / 99 Feb 16, 2026

Kaelan stood in his father’s study, his fists clenched as Alpha Veyron’s words echoed through the room. The fire behind him crackled and spat, its light casting sharp shadows across their faces. Kaelan’s jaw tightened, every muscle in his body screaming to defy the logic his father presented.

“The council is no longer whispering, Kaelan. They are shouting,” Veyron said, his voice calm but cold. “Mira is not what the pack expects of a Luna. She divides instead of unites, not because of who she is, but because of what she represents—a break from tradition, a weakness in their eyes.”

Kaelan stepped forward, his voice low and steady, a warning edge to it. “How many times do I have to fucking say that she’s my mate! The Moon Goddess chose her. That bond cannot be questioned.”

Veyron sighed, his sharp eyes narrowing. “It’s not about the bond; it’s about survival. This pack demands strength. They demand unity. A Luna like Mira will leave them fractured. If you cannot bring them together, they will turn against you. You’ll lose everything—not just your title, but your ability to protect her.”

Kaelan’s stomach twisted. “You’re asking me to reject her.”

“I’m asking you to save her,” Veyron countered. “The council is pushing for you to take a second mate. If you don’t give them what they want, they will challenge you—and Mira will bear the brunt of that decision.”

Kaelan slammed his hand against the desk, the sound reverberating through the room. “I’ll fight them. I’ll stand against the council, against anyone who dares to question my bond.”

“And how long can you hold out before they force you to choose?” Veyron said quietly, his words cutting deeper than a shout ever could. “Sometimes, strength isn’t about defiance—it’s about sacrifice.”

Outside the study, Mira stood frozen. She hadn’t meant to overhear, but the raised voices had drawn her closer. Now, each word struck her like a physical blow. The council wanted Kaelan to take another mate. Worse, his father believed it was the only way to protect them both.

Her heart ached as the weight of it all settled on her. She’d always known she was an unconventional choice for Luna, but this… this was worse than she’d feared. She turned and hurried back to their chambers, her thoughts a whirl of pain and guilt.

Later that night, Kaelan returned to their chambers, his face etched with frustration and exhaustion. He found Mira sitting by the window, her arms wrapped tightly around herself. The moonlight illuminated her face, revealing the tears she hadn’t wiped away.

“Mira,” Kaelan began, his voice softer now, weary.

She turned to him, her eyes filled with a sadness he couldn’t bear. “I heard,” she said simply, her voice trembling.

Kaelan froze, guilt washing over him. “You weren’t supposed to—”

“It doesn’t matter,” Mira interrupted, standing. Her movements were slow, deliberate, as if she were carrying a weight too heavy to bear.

Kaelan crossed the room, reaching for her hands. “Mira, listen to me. None of this changes anything. I won’t let them control us. I’ll fight them, every last one of them, if I have to.”

Her hands trembled in his, but she shook her head. “Kaelan… I don’t want you to fight for me. Not like this.”

His eyes widened, confusion and hurt flashing across his face. “What are you saying?”

She took a deep breath, her voice breaking as she spoke. “Your father’s right. The council won’t stop until they’ve broken you—or me. And I can’t let that happen.”

“No,” Kaelan said firmly, his grip tightening. “Don’t do this, Mira. You’re my mate. You’re the only one I want. I don’t care what they say.”

Tears spilled down her cheeks, but she held his gaze. “And what about your pack? What about your people? They need a leader who can unite them, not one who’s constantly at war with his own council.”

Kaelan’s chest heaved with frustration. “I can’t just abandon you. I won’t.”

“You’re not abandoning me,” Mira whispered, her voice cracking. “But if you keep fighting them, you’ll lose everything—your position, your pack, your ability to protect anyone, even me. If taking a second mate is what it takes to keep the peace, then maybe it’s what you need to do.”

Kaelan staggered back as if her words had struck him. “You don’t mean that. You can’t mean that.”

“I do,” she said, though every word tore at her. “Kaelan, you were born to lead. You have to think about what’s best for the pack—for everyone. Not just us.”

He reached for her again, desperation in his eyes. “Mira, don’t ask me to choose. You’re the only one I want, the only one I’ll ever want.”

Her tears fell faster as she cupped his face, forcing him to meet her gaze. “I love you, Kaelan. But if you love me, you’ll listen to your father. Do what you have to do—for your pack, for your people. I’ll be here, no matter what.”

Kaelan’s breath hitched, his determination crumbling under the weight of her words. She kissed him softly, her lips lingering as if to memorize the feel of him.

When she pulled away, she whispered, “Sometimes love means letting go.”
