The Awakening

Ch. 16 / 99 Feb 16, 2026

Mira's nights had become restless. Each time she closed her eyes, the dreams would come—visions of shadowy forests, haunting howls, and a pair of luminous eyes staring at her through darkness. In her dreams, she stood before a cage wrought of ancient iron. Inside, a wolf prowled restlessly, its movements fluid yet restrained by the bars. Its amber eyes locked onto hers, a silent plea lingering in their depths.

“Who are you?” Mira whispered in one of these dreams, but the wolf merely growled softly before fading into the shadows.

Each morning, she awoke drenched in sweat, her heart pounding. She hadn’t told Kaelan about the dreams, unsure of what they meant or if they were even worth mentioning. But deep inside, she felt a stirring—a connection to the wolf that seemed to echo through her very soul.

The royal pack ceremony arrived amidst growing tension. The grand hall was transformed into a spectacle of gold and silver, with the pack's most distinguished members adorned in their finest attire. Mira stood at Kaelan’s side, her gown a deep emerald green that complemented her dark curls.

“You look beautiful,” Kaelan murmured, leaning closer as they awaited the ceremony to begin.

Mira smiled faintly. She felt the weight of countless eyes upon her, the weight of their judgment. This was her first major appearance as Kaelan’s mate, and she knew many doubted her worthiness.

The ceremony started with traditional blessings and speeches, the hall echoing with the sound of applause and cheers. Mira tried to focus, but the sense of foreboding that had plagued her dreams seemed to intensify.

Then, chaos erupted.

The doors to the grand hall burst open, and masked figures stormed in, their movements swift and deadly. Gasps and screams filled the air as the crowd scattered. Kaelan immediately stepped in front of Mira, his posture protective.

“Stay behind me!” he commanded, his voice firm.

The assassins moved with precision, their blades gleaming in the candlelight. Mira’s breath quickened as one of them broke away from the others, their focus entirely on her. She stumbled back, her heart pounding as the assassin lunged.

Time seemed to slow. A rush of heat surged through Mira’s body, and an instinct she couldn’t explain took over. She raised her hands, and a blinding light burst forth, engulfing the assassin and sending them hurtling across the room.

The hall fell silent, save for the heavy breathing of those who had witnessed the spectacle. Kaelan turned to Mira, his expression a mixture of shock and awe.

“Mira… what was that?” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

Mira looked down at her trembling hands, her mind racing. She had no answers. The light, the power—it had come from somewhere deep within her, unbidden and unfamiliar.

The murmurs began almost immediately.

“She’s a witch!” someone hissed.

“Did you see that? No ordinary wolf can do such a thing.”

Kaelan’s eyes darkened as he turned to face the crowd. “Enough!” he bellowed, his voice echoing through the hall. “Mira saved us. This is no time for baseless accusations.”

But the damage had been done. The pack elders exchanged wary glances, their expressions filled with suspicion. Mira could feel their judgment, their doubt, and it made her stomach churn.

As the guards subdued the remaining assassins and order was restored, Kaelan escorted Mira out of the hall. His grip on her arm was firm but gentle, his expression unreadable.

Once they were alone in his chambers, he turned to her, his gaze intense. “Mira, you have to tell me the truth. What happened back there?”

“I don’t know,” she admitted, her voice trembling. “I… I didn’t mean to do it. It just… happened.”

Kaelan sighed, running a hand through his hair. “The council won’t let this go. They’ll want answers.”
