Sophie’s body lay lifeless in my arms, her apology hanging in the air like a ghost I couldn’t shake. Tears streamed down my face as I cradled her, her blood warm and sticky against my hands. Everything in me screamed for her to wake up, to take back everything she had done, but her chest remained still.
The chaos around me faded as the reality of her death took hold. Sophie, my best friend—the one who had betrayed me, but who I had also loved—was gone.
“Elena, we have to move,” Jasper urged, his voice tight with urgency. He was scanning the area, his eyes darting to where Mark still stood, a twisted smile playing on his lips as if none of this mattered.
I looked up, my hands shaking, and met Mark’s gaze. His cold, calculating eyes sent a wave of fury through me. How could he stand there, so detached, while Sophie—his pawn—lay dead at his feet?
“You did this!” I screamed, my voice raw and broken. “You killed her!”
Mark tilted his head, his smirk widening. “She was never meant to last, Elena. Just like you.”
Jasper stepped in front of me, his stance protective, but I could feel the tension between them building like a storm. There was something unsaid, a secret lingering in the air, and I could no longer ignore the sense that this ran deeper than just me.
“You always ruin everything, Jasper,” Mark sneered, taking a step forward, gun still in hand. “Every time, you try to take what’s mine.”
“What are you talking about?” I demanded, pushing past the grief clawing at my chest. “What is this really about?”
Jasper hesitated, his jaw clenched tight. But before he could respond, Mark chuckled darkly. “You haven’t told her, have you? All this time, you’ve been pretending to be the hero, protecting her from me, when you’re just as guilty.”
I froze, my eyes darting between the two men. “What does he mean, Jasper?”
Jasper’s silence was deafening. His shoulders tensed, his fists clenched at his sides, but he wouldn’t look at me. The truth—whatever it was—hung between us, just out of reach.
“Elena, I—” Jasper started, his voice strained.
Mark cut him off, his voice dripping with malice. “You didn’t think she’d find out, did you? That you could just keep her in the dark while you played your little revenge game?”
I took a step back, my heart pounding in my chest. “What is he talking about?”
Jasper’s face twisted with anguish, but he finally met my eyes. “Elena… Mark and I… we’re not just enemies. We’re brothers.”
The ground seemed to shift beneath me. “Brothers?” I echoed, disbelief flooding my mind. “How… why didn’t you tell me?”
Jasper stepped toward me, his hands outstretched as if to comfort me, but I recoiled. “I didn’t want you to get caught in the middle of this. I wanted to protect you.”
I shook my head, my mind spinning. “Protect me? By lying to me? By keeping me in the dark while you used me just like Mark did?”
“This isn’t the same,” Jasper insisted, his voice thick with desperation. “I’m not like him. I never wanted to hurt you.”
“But you did!” I shouted, the betrayal cutting through me like a knife. “You both did.”
Mark’s laugh rang out again, and I shot him a glare. “You think this is funny?”
“I think it’s amusing that you thought you could trust either of us,” Mark said, his voice dripping with condescension. “Jasper’s been after me for years, always trying to take me down, and now he’s dragged you into his mess.”
I turned back to Jasper, my eyes burning with tears. “Was I just part of your plan too? Another way to get back at him?”
Jasper’s face contorted with guilt. “No, Elena, it’s not like that. I—”
But before he could finish, the sound of more footsteps echoed in the distance. Jasper’s head snapped up, his eyes narrowing. “We have to get out of here now.”
“No,” I said firmly, stepping away from him. “I’m done running. I want answers.”
“Elena, we don’t have time for this,” Jasper insisted, but I stood my ground.
Mark’s eyes glittered with amusement. “She deserves to know, brother. Tell her why you’re really here. Tell her what this has always been about.”
Jasper’s hands clenched into fists. “Shut up, Mark.”
But Mark wasn’t finished. “You think you’re so noble, don’t you? Trying to take me down, pretending like you’re doing it for her, when really, it’s all about you. You’ve always been jealous. Always wanted what I had.”
I looked between them, my stomach churning with dread. “What is he talking about, Jasper?”
Jasper’s face hardened, and he finally spoke, his voice low and pained. “It’s true. This started out as revenge. Mark ruined our family—our father was involved with the same criminal underworld that Mark is part of now. When Mark took over the business, everything fell apart. I lost everything.”
He looked at me, his eyes filled with regret. “But then I met you, Elena. And it stopped being about revenge. I cared about you.”
I felt the floor give way beneath me, the weight of Jasper’s confession crashing down on me. “So you used me too. Just like Sophie. Just like Mark.”
Jasper shook his head vehemently. “No, it’s not like that. I never wanted to hurt you.”
“You lied to me,” I whispered, my voice trembling. “You made me believe you were different.”
“Elena, please—”
“Enough!” I snapped, stepping back. “I’m done being caught between you two.”
The sound of more gunfire interrupted us, and I turned to see a group of men emerging from the shadows. Mark’s reinforcements.
“They’re here,” Jasper said, grabbing my arm. “We need to go.”
But I couldn’t move. I was trapped, not just by the danger around me, but by the betrayal that had torn my world apart. I had no idea who to trust anymore.
“Elena, please,” Jasper urged, his voice frantic. “I’ll explain everything later, but we have to go now.”
I glanced at Mark, who was watching me with a smug grin, and then at Jasper, whose eyes were pleading with me to follow him.
And in that moment, I realized something terrifying.
I was on my own.
I turned and ran, away from Jasper, away from Mark, away from the web of lies that had ensnared me. The sound of gunfire chased me into the night, but I didn’t look back.
I couldn’t trust either of them. Not anymore.
I had to find my own way out of this nightmare.
Before it destroyed me completely.
