The leader's sneer pierced through the darkness, and fear gripped my heart like an iron vice. I couldn't think. I couldn't breathe. The small closet seemed to close in on me, the only sounds my rapid breathing and Jasper's low, steady breaths.
"Now, Elena, this is where things get interesting," the man drawled, stepping closer.
His partner loomed just behind him, both of them shadowed by the dim café light.
Jasper's eyes flicked to me, a silent command in his gaze: be ready. He gripped my arm gently, and I felt the pulse of his calm-calm in the face of a nightmare.
Without warning, Jasper launched himself at the leader, crashing into him with a force I didn't think possible. The man was caught off guard, his gun flying from his hand and skittering across the floor.
"Run, Elena!" Jasper's voice was raw with urgency as he grappled with the man.
I didn't need to be told twice. I bolted out of the closet, my shoes pounding against the café floor as I made a dash for the door. But before I could reach it, the second man intercepted me, grabbing me by the wrist and yanking me back with a force that sent pain shooting through my arm.
"Not so fast, princess," he hissed in my ear, his grip tightening painfully.
I thrashed, desperate to free myself, but his strength was too much. I was dragged back toward the corner, my mind scrambling for a way out. I glanced back to see Jasper still locked in a violent struggle with the leader, both of them throwing wild punches.
"Let me go!" I screamed, using my free hand to claw at my captor's arm, but it was no use. He was dragging me toward a back exit, and the panic in my chest flared to a breaking point. I had to do something-anything.
Just as we reached the door, I spotted the gun on the floor, the one Jasper had knocked out of the leader's hand. My heart raced as I twisted in the man's grip, kicking him in the shin with all the strength I could muster. He grunted in pain, loosening his hold just enough for me to drop to the floor and scramble toward the weapon.
"Get back here!" the man snarled, lunging toward me.
I grabbed the gun and spun around, aiming it with shaking hands. I didn't know if I could actually pull the trigger, but the weight of the cold metal in my hand gave me a brief sense of control.
"Let her go," Jasper growled from across the room, his voice strained as he finally broke free from the leader. He staggered toward us, his face bruised and bleeding, but there was a ferocity in his eyes that sent a chill down my spine.
The man holding me froze, his eyes narrowing as he sized up the situation. I kept the gun pointed at him, my finger trembling on the trigger. I had no idea how to use it, but I prayed that the mere threat would be enough.
"This isn't over," the leader spat, wiping blood from his mouth as he stumbled to his feet.
"Mark's coming for you, Elena. And when he does, there won't be any place left for you to hide."
My heart dropped at his words. Mark. The man I thought I knew, the man I had loved-he was behind this? It didn't make any sense. Why would Mark want me dead? What had I uncovered that could make him turn on me?
Jasper stepped forward, pulling me to my feet and placing himself between me and the men.
"You won't get to her," he said, his voice cold and resolute.
The leader glared at us, his eyes burning with anger. "We'll see about that," he hissed, before signaling his partner to retreat. The two men disappeared into the night, leaving a tense silence in their wake.
I collapsed against the counter, the gun slipping from my hands and clattering to the floor. My body was shaking uncontrollably, the adrenaline fading and leaving me weak.
Jasper knelt beside me, his hand resting gently on my shoulder. "Are you okay?"
I nodded, though the truth was, I wasn't okay.
Not even close. My mind was spinning, trying to piece together everything that had just happened.
"Why did they mention Mark?" | asked, my voice barely a whisper. "Why would they say that about him?"
Jasper's expression darkened. "I don't know yet," he admitted, his jaw clenching. "But we need to figure it out. Fast."
I looked into his eyes, searching for answers.
There was something he wasn't telling me, something more he knew about Mark that he wasn't ready to reveal. But I didn't push him.
Not yet.
"We can't stay here," he said after a moment, his voice soft but firm. "It's not safe anymore."
I nodded, too drained to argue. "Where do we go?"
Jasper stood and offered me his hand. "There's a safehouse. It's far from here, and Mark doesn't know about it."
I hesitated for a moment before taking his hand. My mind screamed at me to ask more questions, to demand the truth, but right now, survival was the only thing that mattered.
As we stepped into the night, leaving the café behind, I couldn't shake the gnawing fear that everything I thought I knew about Mark-about my life-was crumbling beneath me. And with every step I took alongside Jasper, I couldn't help but wonder: Was he truly my ally, or was he leading me deeper into the dark?
