Betrayed by Love, Hunted by Lies

Chapter 8

Ch. 8 / 10 Jan 23, 2025

The docks loomed ahead, shrouded in fog, their dark, hulking shapes casting long shadows across the water. The tension between Jasper and me had become almost unbearable as we neared the meeting point where Sophie said she’d be. The air smelled of salt and rust, and the rhythmic lap of waves against the pier was the only sound in the eerie silence.

Jasper’s grip on the steering wheel tightened as we pulled into the deserted parking lot. His jaw was clenched, eyes scanning the area with sharp intensity. He hadn’t said much since Sophie’s call, and I could feel something shifting between us, something dark and dangerous, like the calm before a storm.

“We shouldn’t trust her,” Jasper muttered under his breath as he killed the engine. “She’s lied too many times.”

I turned to him, my heart racing in my chest. “You think I don’t know that? But if she’s really in danger… if Mark’s coming for her—”

Jasper shook his head, cutting me off. “It could be a trap. Mark’s smart, Elena. He knows you care about Sophie, and he’ll use that against you.”

His words hit me hard, but I couldn’t ignore the gnawing feeling in my gut. Sophie’s voice had been laced with fear. I knew she had lied, betrayed me, and worked with Mark, but something about her desperation on the phone seemed real.

“I have to at least try, Jasper,” I said softly. “If there’s a chance I can save her, I have to take it.”

He stared at me for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Then, with a sigh, he nodded, pushing open the car door. “Fine. But we do this my way. If anything feels off, we get out of there. No hesitation.”

I nodded, my throat tight with nerves. As we stepped out of the car, the chill in the air bit through my jacket, sending shivers down my spine. Jasper walked ahead of me, his every movement tense and controlled. He was prepared for anything.

I followed closely behind, scanning the shadows for any sign of movement. The docks stretched out before us, abandoned warehouses standing like silent sentinels. It was quiet—too quiet.

We moved deeper into the maze of shipping containers and rusted machinery until we reached a secluded corner near the water. A single flickering streetlight illuminated a figure hunched near the edge of the pier. Sophie.

She looked worse than I had imagined—her hair disheveled, her eyes wide with panic. When she saw us, she staggered to her feet, relief flooding her expression. “Elena,” she gasped, rushing toward me.

I hesitated, my emotions in turmoil, but when she reached me, I didn’t pull away. “Sophie, what’s going on? What are you doing here?”

Sophie’s eyes darted to Jasper before she leaned in close, her voice trembling. “He’s coming. Mark—he knows you’ve been investigating him. He’s furious, Elena. He’s going to kill you. I thought I could stop him, but it’s too late.”

I glanced at Jasper, who stood rigid, his gaze locked on Sophie. There was something unreadable in his eyes—a suspicion he wasn’t voicing. “Why should we believe you?” he asked, his voice cold.

Sophie flinched but kept her focus on me. “I know I’ve lied to you, Elena. I know I hurt you, but I never wanted it to get this far. Mark’s dangerous… more dangerous than I realized. I thought I was in control, but I was wrong. He’s coming here tonight. We need to leave.”

The urgency in her voice sent a chill through me, but Jasper wasn’t convinced. “How do we know this isn’t a setup?” he demanded, stepping closer to Sophie, his eyes narrowing.

Sophie recoiled, her breath hitching. “I swear, I’m telling the truth! Mark’s been using me this whole time, manipulating me. I thought… I thought if I helped him, he’d love me, but he only cares about power. I’m nothing to him now.”

Her words stirred something inside me—a painful recognition of the control Mark had over people. I had fallen for his lies once too, believing he loved me when all along, he’d been playing a twisted game. But could I believe Sophie now?

Jasper stepped forward, his gaze icy. “If you’re lying, Sophie, I swear—”

A sudden, sharp sound cut through the air. The crack of gunfire.

Instinctively, Jasper grabbed me and pulled me behind a stack of crates. Sophie screamed, ducking for cover as the sound of footsteps echoed through the fog.

“They found us,” Jasper hissed, his voice low but urgent. “Stay down.”

Panic surged through me, but before I could respond, more shots rang out, the bullets whizzing dangerously close. Jasper cursed under his breath, his eyes scanning the docks for a way out.

“We need to move,” he muttered. “Now.”

Sophie crawled toward us, her face pale with terror. “It’s him! It’s Mark! He’s here!” she cried, her voice breaking.

Jasper turned to me, his eyes dark with determination. “Stay close to me,” he whispered. “No matter what happens, don’t let go.”

We moved together, slipping between the crates as more gunfire erupted around us. My heart raced in my chest, the fear nearly paralyzing me, but I forced myself to stay focused. Mark was here, and he wasn’t going to stop until he had us.

Suddenly, a figure stepped into the open—a tall, imposing silhouette, illuminated by the streetlight. It was Mark, and his eyes were fixed on me.

“You thought you could run, Elena?” His voice was calm, cold, as if he hadn’t just tried to kill us. “You thought Jasper could save you?”

I froze, my heart thudding in my ears. Jasper stood protectively in front of me, but I could see the tension in his body—the restraint. There was something between them, something more than just a sibling rivalry.

“Mark,” Jasper called out, his voice steady. “It’s over. You don’t have to do this.”

Mark let out a low, bitter laugh. “Oh, it’s far from over, brother. You should know better than anyone—this isn’t just about Elena. This is about loyalty. About power.”

He raised the gun, his eyes gleaming with cruel intent. “And I’m not done with you yet.”

Before I could even react, Sophie screamed and lunged forward, throwing herself between us and the line of fire.

“Sophie, no!” I shouted, but it was too late.

The gun went off, and Sophie crumpled to the ground, blood blooming across her chest.

Everything went still. The world seemed to stop as I stared at Sophie, lying motionless on the cold, hard dock.

“Sophie!” I cried, rushing to her side. Tears blurred my vision as I pressed my hands against her wound, trying to stop the bleeding. “Stay with me, Sophie! Please!”

Her eyes fluttered open, and she looked at me, her breath coming in shallow, painful gasps. “I’m sorry,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “I thought… I thought I could fix it…”

And then she was gone.
