The night swallowed me whole as I ran, my legs burning with exhaustion but my mind unable to slow down. Every step echoed the chaos of the last few hours: Sophie’s death, Mark’s smirk, Jasper’s betrayal, the lies—they crashed over me like waves, pulling me under again and again.

I had no idea where I was going. I just needed to get away.

Away from Mark, who had manipulated my life like a puppet master. Away from Jasper, whose lies stung worse than any bullet. I had trusted them both, and now all I had left was the crushing weight of betrayal.

But I wasn’t done. Not yet.

My thoughts spiraled as I reached an old, rundown motel at the edge of town, its flickering neon sign barely visible in the dim light. It wasn’t much, but it was somewhere to hide, at least for now. I slipped inside, the smell of stale cigarettes and cheap perfume clinging to the air.

“Room for the night,” I muttered to the man behind the counter. His eyes barely flicked up from his magazine as he handed me a key, not even bothering to ask questions.

I made my way to the room, locking the door behind me before sinking onto the bed. The silence felt suffocating, but I couldn’t afford to fall apart. Not now.

Pulling out my phone, I hesitated, the screen glowing in the dark. I had a million questions, and yet I didn’t know where to start. Sophie had been trying to warn me about something before she died. Jasper had secrets buried so deep, I wasn’t sure if I’d ever get to the truth. And Mark… Mark had to be stopped, whatever it took.

I scrolled through my contacts and landed on a name I hadn’t called in months—Emily. A reporter I had met briefly when I first started investigating Mark’s business. She had connections in places that I didn’t, and right now, I needed someone outside this tangled web.

Before I could talk myself out of it, I dialed the number.

“Hello?” came Emily’s voice, groggy with sleep. “Who’s this?”

“It’s Elena,” I whispered, unsure if she even remembered me. “We met a while back… I need your help.”

There was a pause, and then her tone sharpened. “Elena? What’s going on? Are you okay?”

“No,” I admitted, my voice cracking. “I’m in trouble, and I don’t know who to trust anymore.”

There was a rustling sound, as if she was sitting up in bed. “Tell me everything.”

And I did. I told her about Mark’s criminal connections, about Sophie’s betrayal and her death, and about Jasper—how he had lied to me, how he was somehow tied to all of it. I spilled everything, leaving out nothing. By the time I finished, my throat was dry, and my hands were shaking.

Emily didn’t speak for a few moments, and the silence was deafening.

“This is bigger than I thought,” she finally said, her voice grim. “Mark’s not just a player in this. He’s at the center of it. His connections go deep, and if Jasper’s tied up in it too, then you’re sitting on a powder keg.”

“I know,” I whispered, the weight of it all pressing down on me.

“But here’s the thing, Elena,” she continued, her voice soft but firm. “If you want to take Mark down, you’re going to need more than just a few pieces of the puzzle. You need hard evidence. Something that will expose him, something no one can ignore.”

I nodded, even though she couldn’t see me. “How do I find that?”

“I’ll help you,” she promised. “I’ll dig into Mark’s past, see what I can find on my end. But you need to be careful. If he knows you’re still alive, he’ll come for you. And if Jasper’s involved, you need to keep your distance.”

A chill ran down my spine at the mention of Jasper. I didn’t know what to believe anymore. Was he my enemy or my only hope?

“Thank you, Emily,” I said, my voice small.

“We’ll get through this,” she said with conviction. “Just stay safe, okay? I’ll be in touch.”

The call ended, and I let the phone drop onto the bed, my mind buzzing with new possibilities. Emily was right—if I wanted to end this, I needed proof. Something undeniable. Something that would bring Mark to his knees.

But where would I even start?

Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. My heart leapt into my throat as I froze, my mind racing. Who could it be? Had Mark already found me?

Another knock, more insistent this time.

I grabbed a small knife from the kitchenette and edged toward the door, pressing my ear against the wood. “Who’s there?”

“It’s me,” came the familiar voice.

Jasper.

I tightened my grip on the knife, my body rigid with tension. “Why are you here, Jasper?”

“I need to talk to you,” he said, his voice low, as if he knew I was on the edge of bolting. “Please, Elena. Let me explain.”

Every instinct told me not to open that door. But my hand betrayed me, slowly turning the lock. I opened it just enough to see his face, and there he stood, his eyes full of pain and regret.

“I’m not your enemy,” he said softly, his eyes pleading with me.

“I don’t know what you are anymore,” I whispered, my voice shaking. “You lied to me. You used me.”

“I had no choice,” he said, stepping closer. “But I swear to you, Elena, I’m trying to protect you. Mark—he’s not just after power. He’s after something far worse. And if we don’t stop him, you’re going to lose everything.”

I narrowed my eyes, my grip on the knife tightening. “And why should I believe you now?”

Jasper’s gaze darkened. “Because there’s something you don’t know. Something that changes everything.”

I took a step back, wary. “What is it?”

He took a deep breath, his expression tortured. “Mark isn’t just targeting you because of Sophie or me. He’s targeting you because of your family. Your father—he was involved with Mark’s network years ago. And he left something behind. Something that Mark is desperate to find.”

My mind reeled. My father? He had died when I was a child. He couldn’t possibly be connected to this.

“You’re lying,” I said, shaking my head. “You’re just trying to manipulate me.”

“I’m not,” Jasper said, his voice raw. “I didn’t want to drag you into this, but Mark’s been hunting for that information for years. And now that he knows who you are, he won’t stop until he gets it.”

I stared at him, my pulse racing. This couldn’t be true. My father had been a good man. He had nothing to do with Mark’s criminal world.

But the look in Jasper’s eyes told me everything.

“What did my father leave behind?” I whispered.

Jasper took a step closer, his voice barely audible.

“Proof.”
