The sound of Mark’s retreating footsteps echoed in my head long after he disappeared into the night. I stood frozen, staring at the spot where he’d been, my heart pounding in my chest. Jasper’s grip on my arm was the only thing grounding me to the moment, keeping me from collapsing under the weight of everything.
He shot him. Jasper had shot Mark, and Mark had walked away like it was nothing.
“We need to move,” Jasper said, his voice tense, but his eyes betrayed a deeper turmoil. He grabbed my hand and started pulling me down the alley, but my feet refused to move.
“Wait,” I whispered, my voice shaky. “What just happened? He’s your brother?”
Jasper stopped abruptly, his back to me, his shoulders rigid. I could see the tension radiating off him, like he was fighting an internal war. He didn’t turn around, but I could feel the weight of his answer hanging in the air between us.
“Yes.” The word was clipped, sharp, like a knife slicing through the night. “Mark is my brother.”
The revelation hit me like a punch to the gut. Mark—my ex-fiancé, the man who had betrayed me with Sophie—was Jasper’s brother. The same man I’d been trying to escape was tied to the one person I thought I could trust.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” I demanded, my voice rising with disbelief. “You knew who he was this whole time, and you didn’t say anything?”
Jasper finally turned to face me, his eyes dark with something unreadable. “Because you wouldn’t have trusted me. And I needed you to trust me.”
My chest tightened with anger, betrayal, and confusion. “And now I’m supposed to trust you? After this?”
Jasper stepped closer, his face hard but his eyes softening with an emotion I couldn’t place. “You need to trust me, Elena, because whether you like it or not, Mark is dangerous. He won’t stop until he gets what he wants, and right now, that’s you.”
I shook my head, trying to wrap my mind around the impossible situation I’d found myself in. “What does he want with me? Why is he so fixated?”
Jasper’s jaw clenched, and for a moment, I thought he wasn’t going to answer. But then he sighed, running a hand through his hair. “It’s not just about you. It’s about control. Mark has been running this city’s underworld for years. Sophie, you, even me—we’re just pieces on his chessboard. And now that you’ve started digging into his affairs, he sees you as a threat.”
I blinked, the words sinking in. “Sophie’s involved with him too?”
Jasper nodded, his expression grim. “More than you realize. She’s not just some pawn—she’s been working with him for a long time. Helping him cover his tracks, manipulate people.”
My stomach churned, the thought of Sophie’s betrayal cutting deeper than I expected. “Why? Why would she do this?”
“Jealousy,” Jasper said, his voice laced with bitterness. “She’s been in love with him for years. And when he chose you, it drove her over the edge. She’d do anything to be in his world, even if it meant destroying you.”
I swallowed hard, the pieces of the puzzle falling into place. Sophie had manipulated me, used our friendship to get closer to Mark. And now, they were both playing a game I hadn’t even known I was a part of.
“So, what now?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. “What do we do?”
Jasper’s eyes hardened, the cold determination I’d seen in him before returning. “We take him down.”
I stared at him, my mind racing. “How? He’s more powerful than either of us. He has people everywhere.”
Jasper smirked, the first sign of dark humor I’d seen from him in hours. “You’re forgetting something, Elena. I know him better than anyone. I know his weaknesses.”
There was a glint in his eyes that sent a chill down my spine. This wasn’t just about saving me anymore. This was personal for Jasper. Whatever had happened between him and Mark, it ran deep, and it was clear that Jasper had his own reasons for wanting to see his brother fall.
Before I could respond, my phone buzzed in my pocket, pulling me back to the present. I hesitated for a moment, then pulled it out, my heart pounding when I saw the caller ID.
Sophie.
My fingers hovered over the screen, dread pooling in my stomach. Jasper tensed beside me, his eyes narrowing at the sight of her name.
“Answer it,” he said quietly. “Put it on speaker.”
I swallowed hard and pressed the button. Sophie’s voice crackled through the line, sharp and urgent.
“Elena? Are you there?”
I glanced at Jasper before answering. “I’m here, Sophie.”
There was a pause on the other end, a beat too long, and when Sophie spoke again, her voice was strained. “You have to listen to me. You’re in danger. Mark—he’s not what you think. He’s dangerous.”
I felt a surge of anger flare up inside me. “You think I don’t know that? You’ve been working with him this whole time, Sophie! You lied to me, you betrayed me—”
“Please,” she cut me off, her voice pleading. “I didn’t have a choice. Mark… he’s been using me. I thought I could control it, but I was wrong. He’s out of control, Elena. You need to get out before it’s too late.”
Jasper’s eyes narrowed, and he leaned in closer to the phone. “Where are you, Sophie?”
There was a brief pause, and then her voice came through, barely a whisper. “I’m at the docks. Mark—he’s coming for me. I don’t have much time.”
Before I could respond, the line went dead, leaving nothing but silence and the heavy weight of impending doom.
Jasper and I exchanged a look, and I knew what we had to do.
“We’re going to the docks,” Jasper said, his voice low but steady.
I nodded, my heart pounding in my chest. Sophie might have betrayed me, but if she was in danger, I couldn’t just leave her to face Mark alone.
As we headed into the night, a storm brewing over the city, I knew we were walking straight into the lion’s den. And with every step, I couldn’t shake the feeling that the truth—about Mark, Sophie, and even Jasper—was far more twisted than I could ever have imagined.
And that none of us might make it out alive.
