Betrayed by Love, Hunted by Lies

Chapter 4

Ch. 4 / 10 Jan 23, 2025

My heart raced as Jasper pulled me away from the pier, the gunshot still echoing in my ears. I couldn’t process what had just happened—Sophie, lying on the ground, her eyes wide with shock. My mind struggled to grasp the enormity of the situation, and panic bubbled up inside me.

“Where are we going?” I gasped, stumbling as we rounded a corner and ducked into a dark alley.

“Somewhere safe,” Jasper replied, his voice low and urgent as he glanced back towards the pier. “We need to get as far away from those men as possible.”

I could feel my pulse pounding in my throat as I tried to catch my breath. “What about Sophie? We can’t just leave her there!” My voice trembled, the thought of abandoning her gnawing at me.

Jasper’s jaw tightened, and for a moment, his eyes darkened. “There’s nothing we can do right now. If we don’t get out of here, we’ll be next.”

The weight of his words crashed down on me, and I reluctantly nodded. But the image of Sophie’s pale face haunted me, fueling a desperate fire inside. “We have to go back for her,” I insisted, my voice rising in a panic.

“No!” Jasper said sharply, grabbing my shoulders to steady me. “Listen to me. We’ll go back. But not yet. We need to figure out what just happened and who shot her. If Mark’s men are involved, they’ll be watching the pier. We can’t risk being seen.”

His grip on my shoulders was firm but reassuring, and for a moment, I let myself feel safe within the storm of chaos. “Okay,” I whispered, my voice wavering. “Just tell me what to do.”

“Let’s find a place to lay low. We can’t go back to my apartment. It’s too close to where we were.” Jasper scanned the alley, his expression tense and focused. “I know a spot nearby.”

As we made our way through the narrow streets, I fought to push aside the fear swirling in my mind. How had everything spiraled out of control so quickly? I had come here to confront Sophie, not to witness a shooting.

“Tell me everything,” I urged, needing to understand the danger we were in. “Who were those guys? What do they want?”

Jasper glanced around, ensuring we were alone before speaking. “Mark has ties to some dangerous people. He’s involved in illegal dealings that go beyond just the art world. The men we saw tonight—they’re part of that. And if they’re here, it means he’s aware of what you’re doing. He won’t take kindly to you digging into his business.”

I swallowed hard, the realization crashing over me like a tidal wave. “What does that mean for us? For me?”

“It means we’re in deep trouble.” His eyes were fierce, a mix of determination and fear swirling in their depths. “And we need to figure out how to turn the tables before it’s too late.”

We turned a corner, and Jasper led me to a small, nondescript café that was closed for the night. He slipped inside through a side door, motioning for me to follow. The interior was dark and quiet, filled with the smell of coffee and the lingering scent of pastries.

“Stay here,” he instructed, moving cautiously toward the back of the café.

I nodded, trying to steady my breathing as I leaned against the cool counter. The silence felt oppressive, the reality of the night settling around me like a thick fog. I couldn’t shake the image of Sophie lying on the ground, helpless and alone.

Jasper returned a moment later, his expression grave. “We’ll need to make a plan, but first, I have to know everything you found out about Mark.”

I straightened, forcing my mind to recall the snippets of conversation I had overheard and the clues I had pieced together. “I don’t know much. I just know he’s involved in something shady. He’s been acting different lately—distant. And then there’s Sophie… she must know more than she’s let on.”

“Exactly,” he said, rubbing his temples as if the weight of our situation was pressing down on him. “But if we’re going to figure this out, we need to take action now. They’ll be coming for you.”

“What do you mean?” I asked, my stomach sinking. “Why would they come for me?”

“Because you’re connected to Sophie and Mark. They’ll think you know something. And they’ll want to silence you.” Jasper’s gaze locked onto mine, and I could see the intensity of his emotions reflected in his dark eyes. “We need to find out what Sophie was hiding, and we need to do it fast.”

Before I could respond, my phone buzzed in my pocket. I fished it out, my heart racing as I saw Sophie’s name flashing across the screen. “It’s Sophie,” I said, surprised. “Should I answer?”

“Put it on speaker,” Jasper urged, his expression tense. “If she’s in trouble, we need to hear what she has to say.”

I pressed the button, and her voice crackled through the speaker. “Elena? Can you hear me? Please, you have to listen. I—”

The line went dead, and the silence was deafening. I looked at Jasper, my heart sinking. “What happened?”

“Maybe she’s in danger. We have to go back now,” he said, urgency lacing his words. “If they know she’s talking to you…”

“No!” I protested, the panic rising in my throat. “What if they’ve caught her? What if she’s—”

Before I could finish, the café door swung open with a bang, and in stepped the two men from the pier, their eyes scanning the room.

“Looks like we found you,” the leader said, a cruel smile spreading across his face.

My heart raced as I took a step back, instinctively moving closer to Jasper. “We need to hide,” I whispered, panic coursing through me.

Jasper didn’t hesitate. “Over there.” He pointed to a storage closet at the far end of the café.

But before we could make a move, the leader called out, “No use hiding, kids. We’re not here to play games.”

“Run!” Jasper shouted, and without a second thought, we sprinted toward the closet.

As we dove inside, I could feel the weight of our situation pressing down on me. The door slammed shut behind us, plunging us into darkness.

Breathless, I turned to Jasper, adrenaline pumping through my veins. “What now?”

“Now we wait,” he said, his voice low and steady. “And hope they don’t find us.”

But as the sounds of footsteps approached, my heart raced with fear, the reality of our situation crashing down on me. I had stepped into a dangerous game, one that I wasn’t sure I could survive.

And as the door creaked open, revealing the two men standing in the light, I realized that the stakes had just become far more deadly than I ever imagined.

“Looks like you’re not as clever as you thought,” the leader sneered, stepping forward. “Now it’s time to play.”

My breath caught in my throat as the weight of his words settled in. What had I gotten myself into?
