Tabitha's POV
I stood outside the door, my heart pounding as I waited to see Elena's face.
Crystal, feeling my mood, was restless in my mind.
I took a deep breath, trying to calm my nerves.
But I still unconsciously clenched the folds of my shirt.
Before, I was out in the open while Elena was pulling all the strings from the shadows.
And now, our positions were reversed, and she didn't even know I was here. How could I not be excited when the truth was just around the corner?
As the door slowly opened, a woman in a white dress walked in.
She was tall and slender, with a mask on her face, and her exposed skin looked smooth and fair.
I was dying to see the face hidden behind this mask.
Her legs looked normal. Presumably, she deliberately disguised herself as a janitor with a leg problem and darkened her face to stay under the radar.
The wind swirled around her dress. If I hadn't known she was Elena, I would think she was just a sweet, good-hearted girl.
Crystal, however, could sense something off about her—an indescribable vibe that set her apart.
She stopped three meters away, her hands naturally hanging down, her voice hoarse as she asked, "Mr. K, you wanna see me?"
So this was her real voice. Sounded like she had injured her throat before.
I could catch the subtle changes with my ears.
Klein crossed his legs and slowly turned the opal ring, looking domineering and indifferent.
He glanced at Ethan and Albert. "Get out."
Although the two were worried, they didn't dare to disobey Klein and had to leave.
There were only three of us left in the room. I held back my excitement, keeping Klein's words in mind.
I was just here to see what Elena looked like.
I even tried to breathe quieter, worried I might give myself away.
Klein stood up and walked towards Elena step by step, his aura growing stronger, each step so firm and powerful.
When he paused in front of her, I could feel the aura emanating from him. It was a kind of authority unique to those in power, making me involuntarily want to submit.
"How have you been these years?" he asked in a calm voice.
Elena lowered her head and spoke with respect, "Thanks to you, Madam Rose has been good to me. I've always kept in mind that you saved my life, and for that, I'm always grateful."
I widened my eyes. They actually knew each other?
"I remember you were only eleven when you left," said Klein.
"Yes," Elena replied, curling her fingers.
Klein gestured towards his chest. "You were only this high back then."
"Right." Elena's voice was barely audible.
"You are much taller now, but you are still as skinny as before." Klein tried to remove her mask, his movement so natural like he was her family.
Elena instinctively covered her face but quickly gave up the struggle.
Here, masks seemed to be for protection. They wouldn't take off their masks easily except for facing those extremely close to them.
Klein's hand fell onto the back of her head.
Crystal sensed Elena's nervousness. She growled softly in my mind, reminding me to stay alert.
Elena's mask was slowly taken off, and soft strands of hair covered most of her face. I was so nervous that I almost forgot to breathe.
Klein then lifted her chin. "It's been a while, kiddo."
As I saw her face, I was stunned on the spot.
Crystal let out a low growl in my mind. Clearly, she was thrilled to finally see this devil's face.
