ADRIA’S POV.
My heart thrummed loudly in my chest, and I tried to take in deep breaths.
Derek’s handsome face had never been scary to me since the night we became real friends, but at the moment, his handsome face looked like that of a vampire in a scary movie.
It suddenly felt like he was the only vampire between us, and that he was going to gobble me up.
I brushed his hand off my mouth, and my breath came out hard.
“What are you doing?” I hissed, but he simply looked around, and in a single bound, he swept me off my feet.
I screamed, but my scream was cut off, as a large amount of air whooshed into my mouth, causing me to choke.
Derek raced quickly along the streets, bounding up the buildings.
In seconds, we were in the air, jumping over buildings, but no matter how I called his name, he didn’t stop. He kept on jumping from building to building, and keeping my heart in my throat.
I knew I was supposed to be scared that a vampire was running off with me somewhere, but because I knew him, fear hadn’t set in yet.
Finally, we were in the forest, and he was racing faster than ever, dodging trees, and jumping over branches. I kept on feeling like we were going to hit something, so I closed my eyes, and let him continue.
After all, even if I screamed, he wasn’t going to take me back just because I did. He was intent on saying whatever it was he needed to say.
At long last, I was dropped, and I fell to the floor, feeling dizzy.
He was breathing heavily in rage, and I stayed on the ground for a while, so I could calm down, and stop my eyeballs from rolling.
When I had gotten a hold of myself, I got to my feet, and stared at Derek.
He was still staring at me with fury in his eyes, and I wondered just what exactly made him mad.
I had skipped two nights of meeting him. We hadn’t met the previous night, and I had been too busy chilling with my friends to remember there was a vampire who reveled in brainwashing me, and making me kill humans.
“What? Spit whatever you have to say out. I have a lot to do, and cannot waste my time here.” I said, confidently, and he squinted his eyes in disbelief.
“Did you think I was your minion or what? Did you expect me to flock around you always?” I asked, and his lips formed a tight line. “Because you made me use my vampire powers, you think we’re something like master, and student? Well, you’re wrong. Turns out, I might have been better off without them. I still miss the joys of being human.”
“You got back with Lucien? The wolf? Why? A wolf and a vampire, cannot be together!” He blurted out, ignoring my words.
“Says who!? I don’t care what anyone says. I’m going to stay with Lucien.”
“How could you get back with the person who left you, all because of what you were?”
“Well, he’s back!”
“So, he can leave you just like that, and come back anytime?”
“Well, he saved me. He saved me from ruining my life, from doing the one thing that would forever scar me. How could you bring my friend to the forest? Well… actually, I’m glad you did. Because if you didn’t, then I wouldn’t see how wrong it was to kill other people’s friends.”
“Adria, stop speaking this way. We are vampires. You’ll only cause conflict within yourself. You should learn how to be unapologetically yourself.”
“Oh, I should be a vampire unapologetically? Is that what you’re saying?” I asked with a look of faked amusement. “I should eat people, and be sorry that I am not sorry?”
“Come back, Adria! You have a lot to do! Don’t forget, you need blood. You’ll go crazy.”
“Lucien said he’ll help me.”
“Will he be there when you’re eating your mother in the middle of the night?” He asked, and I lost my tongue. “Adria, stop acting up. Leave the wolf alone. You need to come back. Okay, let’s say we’ve been making a few mistakes, that’s fine. We can go back to taking sips out of humans, and never going back to them.”
“You know what? I think I now understand what you meant when you said you never go back to the humans you touched. They’re dead, right? You never went back because they were dead. Did we ever go back to the humans we sucked blood from? No. That’s because they’re all dead!”
“Adria, just stop this! You’ll need blood anyway.”
“No, I don’t need it.” I said, and all of a sudden, he bent, picked up a rock, and hurled it at me.
I held my head, and screamed, as I was too shocked to defend myself, but the stone sailed past me, and I wondered if he missed, or was just trying to scare me.
“Yes, you do.” He replied slowly, and just then, the scent of blood floated past my nose, and its sweet taste lay on my tongue as a memory.
Warm, sticky, sweet, fast…
I started taking in really deep breaths, as my claws burst out. I hadn’t drank blood in three days, so I was very thirsty for it.
My fangs protracted, and I grunted, trying to hold it in.
Then I turned.
Behind me was a girl in a lovely off-shouldered dress. She had a calm expression on her face even though her shoulder was bleeding from the jagged rock Derek had hurled at her heavily.
She was a girl, she still had a life, loved ones waiting for her.
She probably had dreams, hopes, aspirations, a future, and people who didn’t want to lose her. Death was probably the last thing she wanted.
Was I… was I about to take it from her? I tried to scream, but it came out in a roar instead.
