Alpha King of Ruin and Desire

Chapter 99

Ch. 99 / 150 Dec 30, 2025

The emergency exit Kian had instructed Gareth to blast provided a temporary, terrifying tunnel into the adjacent service level. After Ronan verified the heat shields were holding the main airlock door closed—a temporary victory against Marcus’s sophisticated trap—Kian didn't waste another second. He lifted Theodora’s unconscious form, careful to support her body, and slid through the jagged breach, Gareth following close behind. Ronan stood guard, his plasma rifle trained on the silent, sealed airlock door, prepared to sell his life for their escape.

They navigated the scorching, narrow crawl space—a labyrinth of pulsating coolant lines and electrical conduit—for what felt like an eternity. Finally, they reached a secure maintenance ladder leading down to Sub-Level 7, a loading bay far from the central operations Marcus had compromised. As they emerged into the relative cool of the bay, Kian signaled for immediate medical transport.

“He's gone,” Kian rasped, his own skin mottled red from the steam burns, the adrenaline beginning to crash. “He sealed himself in and used an escape vector too small for us to follow. A pre-rigged escape route only someone with deep internal knowledge of the Night Shade’s schematics would know.”

Gareth nodded grimly, checking his own scorched gear. “It was surgical, Your Majesty. That pressure sequence wasn't just to kill us; it was a distraction to mask his exit signature.”

Kian watched the medical team carefully load Theodora onto a sterile gurney. “He hasn’t gone far. Marcus Vane doesn't flee; he regroups. He has simply gone underground to plot his next move.”

Ronan arrived minutes later, having secured the pipe room access point and set automated monitoring. He looked ragged but determined. Kian met his gaze.

“You performed your duty under impossible odds, Ronan. Both of you,” Kian stated, his voice carrying the authority of the Emperor, stripping away the tension of the last few hours. “You acted decisively, saving the life of the heir and the lives of your comrades. I will personally brief the Imperial Council on your actions. Your loyalty will be recorded and honored.”

Ronan simply nodded, relief flooding his eyes. “Thank you, Your Majesty. My loyalty is to you and Luna.”

Theodora was rushed to the Imperial Medical Bay at the core of the System’s capital. The ensuing hours were a blur of nervous waiting. Kian and Amelia sat side-by-side, their shared anxiety a quiet, heavy presence. The initial medical assessment was agonizingly slow, but the final verdict brought a collective, shuddering sigh of relief.

“The paralytic agent was non-toxic, designed for temporary incapacitation,” the Chief Physician reported, his face grave despite the good news. “She is recovering well. And the unborn heir… the baby is completely fine. The trauma did not compromise the pregnancy.”

Kian squeezed Amelia’s hand, burying his face in her shoulder for a brief, overwhelmed moment. The threat of total loss had been averted, but the cost—the physical and emotional wounds—were still fresh.

Later that afternoon, when Theodora was stable, awake, and in a private recovery suite, Kian and Amelia were allowed in. The room was sterile white, but the sunlight pouring through the armored window gave it a soft, forgiving glow. Theodora lay propped up by pillows, looking impossibly fragile, but her eyes held a clarity and depth they hadn’t seen since before her exile.

As Kian approached, Theodora reached out a trembling hand, tears already streaming down her face. She wasn't reaching for Kian, but for Amelia.

"Amelia, please," she whispered, her voice cracking. "Please forgive me."

Amelia sat on the edge of the bed, her expression a mixture of profound sorrow and empathy.

Theodora began to speak, her confession halting at first, then flowing with a raw, agonizing sincerity that stripped away all the layers of her Imperial persona.

"I have done terrible, monstrous things to you. Everything I did, every lie I told, every maneuver... it was driven by fear, greed, and the desperation to survive within the System that rewards only the ruthless." She gripped Amelia's hand tightly. "The financial fraud—it was mine. I implicated Zoran, but I set up the complex shell accounts. It was always about controlling the wealth, controlling the narrative. I wanted to be the last one standing."

Her breath hitched, and she looked from Amelia to Kian, the shame radiating from her like a physical heat.

"But the worst thing I did," she continued, her voice dropping to a tormented whisper, "was the betrayal of trust. The ultimate humiliation. I... I slept with Zoran, Amelia's former fiancé, repeatedly, knowing that I was driving a permanent, cruel wedge between you two. It wasn't love; it was a weapon. A terrible, selfish, political act to secure my place and destroy yours. I wanted to feel powerful, and tearing apart your happiness was the most potent power I could grasp."

She looked directly at Amelia, her eyes pleading for a shred of understanding. "I was terrified of being discarded, Amelia. I was terrified of being irrelevant. I let that fear twist me into a monster. And now, I am left with the result—the child of a man who was nothing more than a pawn in his own father's murderous game. I have nothing left but this truth."

Theodora broke down, sobbing uncontrollably.

Amelia didn't pull away. She reached out and smoothed Theodora’s hair, holding her close until the immediate intensity of the tears subsided. Kian watched, a silent, awe-struck witness to the raw honesty unfolding between the two women.

As if choreographed by fate, the door to the suite slid open. Standing in the doorway, hesitant and looking older than his years, Amelia’s father. A man whose entire life had been defined by his rigid adherence to the System’s social hierarchy and his subsequent cruelty toward his own daughter, approached the bedside slowly.

He bowed his head, a gesture of humility Kian had never seen from the powerful Senator. He didn't look at Theodora; his focus was entirely on Amelia.

"Amelia," he began, his voice gravelly, thick with unshed emotion. "I know this is not the time or the place, but seeing the cost of what the System demands... and seeing your steadfastness amidst all this chaos... I must speak."

He took a deep, shaky breath. "I have mistreated you, my daughter. I saw your sensitivity, your artistic nature, your need for autonomy, not as strength, but as a weakness that threatened my standing in the packs. I tried to force you into a mold—the perfect Imperial consort—and when you resisted, I became cruel. I denied your pain, I belittled your dreams, and I pushed you into a situation that brought you nothing but suffering."

He swallowed hard, his hands clenching at his sides. "I am sorry, Amelia. I was a terrible father. I sacrificed my relationship with you for the fleeting approval of men like Marcus and the false promise of power. Please, find it in your heart to forgive me for my arrogance and my cruelty."
