Alpha King of Ruin and Desire

Chapter 93

Ch. 93 / 150 Dec 30, 2025

Ronan stood before the Citadel's High Command—a grim assembly of Royal Guard Captains, the Minister of Justice, and the Head of Citadel Security. He looked beaten, a man consumed by the catastrophic failure of his transport mission. He reported the ‘suicide’ of Zoran Vane with a practiced blend of shame and regret, detailing the paralytic and Vane’s self-destructive violence. He finished with the bitter confession of Theodora’s unauthorized exit.

"My failure is complete, Commanders," Ronan stated, his chin high despite the simulated humiliation. "I ordered the paralytic. I allowed the death of a prisoner whose information we still needed. And I allowed a junior staff member—whose instability clearly compromised my judgment—to flee into the night. I accept full responsibility for both the death and the escape. I await the King’s judgment."

The assembly was divided. Some were furious at the loss of a valuable prisoner; others were relieved Vane was simply gone, preventing a messy public trial. The Minister of Justice, a staunch loyalist named Highwood, accepted the narrative easily.

"A convenient, if shameful, end to a traitor," Highwood pronounced, folding his hands. "Ronan, your demotion will be severe, but your service record stands. The report will be published as stated. We require stability, not a martyrdom."

Ronan felt the bitter weight of the lie settle upon him. He was publicly disgraced, but the true mission was intact. He had protected the truth of Marcus's return.

Meanwhile, in the Royal Castle, Kian and Amelia were in the secure office, pouring over the digital logs and physical records Ronan had smuggled out before his interrogation. The search grid—a massive, silent deployment by Gareth’s Nightshade scouts—was already active across the border territories, but they needed a target, not a territory.

"Myra is managing the Council through encrypted channels," Amelia reported, pointing to a holographic map showing the Citadel's core districts. "The story is holding. Zoran Vane is a footnote. But Kian, this is impossible. Marcus entered and exited the highest-security block, took a pregnant woman, and left nothing but a single silver coin. No blood, no scuff marks, no forced entry."

Kian ran his fingers over the map, tracing the route of the security detail. "He didn't need force. He had an inside man—or woman—who knew the shift schedules. He used Theodora's own network against her, likely someone she trusted to get her messages out to Vane."

Amelia’s eyes narrowed. "Ronan isolated the entire dungeon staff involved in the transfer and Theodora’s care. Fifteen people. All accounted for, all gave clean statements."

"Clean statements are meaningless," Kian murmured, walking over to the file table. "Marcus is not a brute force operator. He is a predator. He would use the smallest, weakest link. The one nobody suspects."

Amelia, following his line of thinking, pulled up the personnel files and began cross-referencing financial records. Most staff lived modestly. But one caught her attention: Lena, a young, quiet custodian who worked the late-night maintenance shifts in the Dungeon complex.

"Lena's ledger is clean," Amelia noted, "except for a single, large money transfer three days ago—a repayment of an old family debt. It's legitimate, traceable, and large enough to be suspicious, but not too large to alert internal monitoring."

Kian was already looking at Lena's scheduled duties. "She was the silent courier. She owed Theodora a favor or needed money desperately. She delivered the message, or she brought in the single item Marcus needed to access the cell block—not a key, but perhaps a distraction. And he used her debt payoff as her silence money."

Amelia accessed the log for all vehicles passing through the Citadel Service Gate during the time window of the escape. The gate logs were exhaustive, documenting every delivery truck, repair vehicle, and waste disposal unit.

"Ronan already reviewed this. Nothing suspicious," Amelia said, scrolling rapidly.

"He was looking for an anomaly. Look for the normality," Kian instructed, leaning over her shoulder. "Marcus operates in the shadow of routine."

Amelia paused the feed. A maintenance van, belonging to an external, contracted waste disposal company, had entered and exited the secure area twenty minutes after Vane's official time of death.

"Citadel Waste Services, Unit 4," Amelia read. "It's the usual collection route. It’s logged out clean."

"A maintenance van is the perfect cover. It's expected, it smells of refuse, and guards simply want it gone. It passed through the gate. But did it exit the city?" Kian asked, his eyes gleaming with sudden, cold certainty.

Amelia immediately cross-referenced the service gate log with the City Gate manifest.

"It never left the city limits," she whispered. "The Citadel Waste Service van, Unit 4, registered as leaving the Citadel complex, but it was not logged exiting the city through the main gates. It must have been ditched, and they transferred to a different vehicle or traveled underground."

"He needed a quick, anonymous exit from the complex, and then he vanished into the city's underbelly," Kian confirmed. "Marcus is using the deepest, oldest tunnels—the ones my father closed off. The ones only a former Alpha would know."

Kian slapped the desk once. "This changes everything. Gareth is searching the wilderness. Marcus is likely still in the city or moving through its defunct infrastructure. He would want to be close enough to watch the political fallout of his handiwork."

He looked at Amelia, his resolve hard. "I'm going to Gareth. We need to shift the focus from the borders to the dark heart of the capital and the old tunnels. You stay here. You are the King in the Citadel. Manage Myra, manage Ronan, keep the lie stable. If Marcus makes a move, it will be against the political center—where the crown is."

Amelia stepped forward, gripping his hands tightly. "Don't go alone. Take Ronan. His public disgrace is my perfect cover. He is on my person as my 'guard,' but he is actually my lead intelligence officer. I will not rest until the killer of my father is stopped, and Theodora is brought home." Kian kissed her fiercely. "If you need me, you use the emergency word: Crescent."

With the first actionable intelligence secured—the trail of the stolen maintenance van—Kian prepared for his covert departure, leaving his Luna to hold the brittle shield of the Kingdom's stability.
