Alpha King of Ruin and Desire

Chapter 128

Ch. 128 / 150 Dec 30, 2025

The Alpha’s study was a sanctuary of strategic thought, but tonight, the silence was suffocating, punctuated only by the crisp flutter of reports being discarded. Kian stood before the large window overlooking the Keep’s courtyard, now a scene of orderly, yet frantic, activity. He was no longer the rampaging beast; he was the calculating King, a transformation far more dangerous.

Gareth, ever the pillar of competence, finished detailing the initial findings from the immediate vicinity of the ward breach. "The magical signature dissipated entirely, Alpha. Myra is certain that the nullification spell was a one-time use, precision strike. It lasted no more than five seconds, which is all the time a high-speed Morvane would need."

Kian nodded slowly, his mind dissecting the complexity of the crime, separating the layers of personal malice from political opportunism. "Five seconds. That’s enough time for an attack coordinated by two people who know our capabilities intimately, and who harbor a hatred deep enough to risk total war."

He turned, leaning against the massive mahogany desk, his gaze scanning the historical archive volumes lining the wall. "This was not a generalized attack on the Morvane Kingdom. This was a targeted strike against the symbol of our future, Amelia. And therefore, against me."

He held up a hand, ticking off the requirements that eliminated nearly all known rivals: "First: The logistics. The infiltration and extraction were executed by a master strategist with Morvane speed and strength. Someone who knows the old service tunnels and the blind spots of the Shadow Guard shifts. Second: The high-level magic. The nullification of the ancient Fae-Morvane ward matrix requires knowledge only held by a handful of the oldest Coven families. Third: The alchemical weapon—that airborne sedative was designed to bypass my senses and incapacitate the strongest guards without leaving a trace."

"The conclusion is inescapable," Gareth stated grimly. "We are facing a collaborative enemy. A dark alliance between two former elites, each seeking vengeance."

Kian pushed the current list of political opponents—the border skirmishers and minor Alphas—aside. They were irrelevant noise. His focus tightened on the historical documents.

"The Morvane component," Kian began, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous growl. "The precision, the chilling disregard for life, and the sheer audacity point to only one name that commands such respect and fear among the disenfranchised: Marcus Vane."

Gareth stiffened, the name carrying the weight of ancient betrayal. "Marcus Vane. The former Alpha of the Crescent Pack. We were certain he died after the uprising twenty years ago. The one who murdered your father."

"He didn't just assassinate the King; he assassinated the architect of peace," Kian corrected, his eyes dark with the memory of his childhood loss. "Vane saw my father’s attempt at Fae-Morvane unity as treason, a poisoning of the pure Morvane bloodline. He was Alpha of the Crescent Pack—a massive, power-hungry force—until I crushed him after the assassination. He knows our military structure, he trained the best trackers, and he has a personal, generational grievance against the Nightshade Alpha line."

"So Vane is the planner and the executioner. He provides the speed and the military intellect," Gareth summarized, trying to keep pace with Kian's terrifying deduction. "But he never possessed the magical prowess for this. He needed a Coven operative with an equally personal and deep-seated hatred."

Kian retrieved a forgotten historical text detailing the inner workings of the original Coven founding families. He flipped to a diagram detailing the complex geometry of the wards his father and Amelia’s parents had reinforced.

"The magic required to turn the Keep invisible for five seconds is not common Coven spell-craft," Kian explained, tapping the complex diagram. "It belongs to the Obsidian Coven, the fundamentalists who refused all diplomacy with Morvanes or Fae. They viewed the Morvane Kingdom as nothing more than feral beasts meant for hunting, not partnership."

"And the leader of that extremist branch," Kian continued, tracing a lineage on the page, "was rumored to be the only apprentice of Elder Valeris, the true master of the warding enchantments. A sorceress who was cast out for dabbling in dark alchemy and forbidden arts, obsessed with restoring magical dominance. Her name was Aurora."

Aurora. The name echoed Marcus Vane’s dangerous reputation. Vane represented the pinnacle of Morvane supremacist violence, and Aurora, the absolute peak of Coven magical extremism. The two had been exiled for opposing the very alliance Kian and Amelia were about to seal.

"Aurora would possess the knowledge of the warding spells, how to nullify them, and the specific alchemical formulae Myra detected," Kian concluded, the puzzle complete, the picture horrifyingly clear. "They are two sides of the same coin of fanaticism. They have allied to destroy the King who defeated them both, and the Luna who symbolizes everything they despise."

He fixed Gareth with a stare that promised annihilation. "We are not fighting for political dominance, Beta. We are fighting a personal vendetta led by the two ghosts who were supposed to be dead: the former Alpha of Crescent Pack and the exiled Sorceress of the Obsidian Coven. They took Amelia not for leverage, but to hurt me, and to use her as a focal point to ignite the hatred between our races again."

Kian's voice hardened into absolute steel. "Prepare the mobilization orders. I will not wait for ransom demands or coded threats. We will find Aurora’s last known stronghold, and we will find Vane’s current hunting grounds. We will hunt them down, and we will do it before they can use Amelia to fracture the Kingdom. This ends tonight."
