Alpha King of Ruin and Desire

Chapter 12

Ch. 12 / 150 Dec 30, 2025

The Nightshade fortress transitioned instantly from a passive stronghold to an active military base. Kian, shedding the last vestiges of the isolated King, became the General, his movements precise, his commands unyielding. He did not speak to Amelia outside of tactical necessity, using the mission jargon as a dense emotional shield. The forty-eight hours until departure felt like forty-eight minutes.

The four-person insertion team was finalized: Rune, a silent, agile Nightshade specialist tasked with accessing and containing the volatile Aurum Sanguis; Lykos, a seasoned infiltrator specializing in thermal-scan avoidance; Amelia, the strategist; and Kian, the 'heavy deterrent.'

“I wish Beta Gareth was here, but I think it’s important to complete his training and joins with us soon” Kian sighed and spread their supply list across the holographic map, pointing out the necessary gear. "You will be outfitted with cold-weather gear, Amelia. The Northern Peaks are unforgiving. Lykos will handle perimeter breach; Rune, you execute the extraction. We move at maximum velocity. There is no contingency for extended engagement with the Shard Pack. Our goal is minimal footprint and immediate withdrawal."

Amelia, clad now in dark, insulated tactical gear that felt foreign yet empowering, watched Kian manage the logistics. He was masterful, his focus so intense it seemed to suck the oxygen from the room. Yet, through the mate bond, she felt a seismic tension—not fear of the mission, but terror over the Rebound Agony she had predicted. He was meticulously planning her safety against every external threat, while ignoring the catastrophic internal threat posed by his own cursed body.

In the corner of the hangar, Rune, wearing thick gloves and a specialized ocular rig, was meticulously calibrating the containment unit. Amelia moved over to observe the preparation of the catalyst's final vessel. The cryo-vault was small, designed for instantaneous freezing. "Rune," Amelia murmured, "the text emphasized the rapid dissipation of the metaphysical charge. How small is our margin of error?" Rune didn't turn, his voice quiet beneath the hum of the cooling units. "The Aurum Sanguis must be utilized within five minutes of extraction and contained immediately after. The stabilization effect is momentary. Think of it as a flash-bulb: bright, brief, and with immediate consequences for the user. Its instability is the greatest risk of this operation, aside from the Shard Pack themselves." The cold, hard technicality of their ten seconds made the mission even more insane. Amelia’s breath hitched, the image of that "flash-bulb" of hope and pain settling deep in her mind.

She cornered him back near the loading ramp, where specialized cryo-vaults were being loaded onto a low-profile transport jet.

“Kian, we need to discuss the stabilization protocol for the rebound,” Amelia stated, her voice flat, demanding his professional attention.

He continued supervising the vault strapping, not looking at her. “It is stabilized by distance and time. We will have both the moment we retreat.”

“No,” Amelia insisted, stepping closer—not quite to the ten-foot line, but close enough to make him halt his activity and feel the burn of her proximity. “The text specifically mentions that the suppressed pain, when released, is amplified. It will not just be a mirror; it will be a concentrated wave. You will be incapacitated. I need to know you have a designated handler, someone you trust, prepared to stabilize you.”

Kian turned then, his eyes burning gold. The sheer force of his Alpha command pressed down on her, an invisible weight. “My capacity to function is not your concern, Thorne. Your concern is the integrity of the mission and the retrieval of the catalyst. I will endure the rebound. That is the price of the ten seconds.”

He lies! He is ready to break for us! He will suffer! Amelia’s wolf, usually encouraging the closeness, sounded furious at Kian's suicidal defiance. The cost is too high, Mate! Make him listen!

“And what if the pain is great enough to compromise the retrieval? What if you collapse and Lykos or Rune have to drag a six-foot-six Alpha King out of hostile territory?” Amelia challenged, forcing the situation back to cold, irrefutable strategy. She could taste the bitter edge of his controlled fear through the mate bond—a primal scent of ozone and iron that his human facade desperately tried to suppress with sheer will. He was locking down his emotions, but the bond betrayed him, revealing the agonizing certainty that he believed this brief connection would genuinely incapacitate him.

Kian lowered his voice, the Alpha command fading into something ragged and desperate. “If I collapse, Amelia, they follow your direction. But I promise you this: the pain I feel for ten seconds of contact with you will be worth every moment of the rebound. The touch is the fuel. The pain is the payment. I will endure the payment.”

He looked at her, his expression raw, and for the first time since their contract, the King saw only his mate.

"This is not just about the curse," Kian continued, his voice barely a breath above a whisper, his gaze pleading for her understanding. "It is about the truth of the prophecy. Zoran Vane has made the entire Morvane world doubt the legitimacy of the True Mate bond. We need that ten seconds of indisputable evidence, that single moment where the King's mate is claimed, to rally the traditionalists and turn the tide against the Syndicate. Every second of agony is a step toward victory."

“I have lived in a ten-foot cage for a decade, Amelia,” he whispered. “Ten seconds of freedom to confirm that you are mine, and that the curse has not destroyed our future, is all I need. I will not compromise our window for pain management. We use the time we buy, and we pay the consequence.”

His unwavering commitment—not to the throne, but to her—stripped away her last defense. He was choosing her over his own sanity and safety.

“Understood, General,” Amelia conceded, the tactical response masking the deep tremor of fear and longing that ran through her.

By the time the sun dipped below the Nightshade peaks, casting the fortress in deep shadow, the team was loaded. Kian stepped onto the ramp of the jet, turning only once to look back at Amelia. Their eyes met across the vast, echoing space of the hangar. It was the longest, most unguarded look they had ever shared—a silent exchange of farewell, commitment, and the mutual, reckless decision to embrace a beautiful disaster. He nodded—a silent farewell that felt final and absolute.

As the jet lifted off, roaring into the unforgiving northern wind, Amelia watched the lights of the fortress dwindle. She clutched the laminated map of the Shard Pack perimeter, her human mind focused on coordinates, but her wolf's thoughts were a relentless, rhythmic chant in her skull: Forty-eight hours. Ten seconds. Claim. The mission had begun.
