Alpha King of Ruin and Desire

Chapter 42

Ch. 42 / 150 Dec 30, 2025

The morning after their intense reunion found Kian and Amelia seated in Kian's study, not amid the scattered papers from the previous night, but at the massive, obsidian conference table. The mood was grounded and purposeful. A strong, stable life force flowed between them, giving their decisions unprecedented clarity. They had moved past survival and were now firmly focused on building an impenetrable future.

“Good morning, My Alpha and Luna. The breakfast is ready as you liked!” When they arrived at the breakfast table, an Omega welcomed them on the way. Amelia and Kian sat in their usual places.

“The priority is our external security,” Kian stated, leaning back in his chair. He was wearing soft, dark linen, and his Alpha energy felt contained yet immense. “The breach was internal, but the attack came from the South. We must assume our border defenses, however formidable they seemed before, are compromised in strategy, if not in structure.”

Amelia, dressed in deep amethyst robes, nodded, her finger tracing a line on the tactical map spread before them. “The perimeter wards are being reinforced. I've sent messages to the Elemental Witches—not the neutral ones, but the loyalists—to weave permanent, unseen barriers along the river and the pass. We need magic that is subtle, Kian, but structurally sound, like your mountains.”

“Good. And Gareth is already organizing the new patrol rotations,” Kian added. “He’s running them in staggered groups, changing the schedules daily, and using only trusted mid-level Pack members. No more relying on a single, permanent Elder council for deployment knowledge.”

This brought them to the grim, unavoidable topic of the past.

“And Elder Vorn?” Amelia asked, her voice hardening slightly.

Kian’s face remained stone-cold. “Vorn and his immediate family were stripped of their ranks and protection. They are exiled beyond the Ironwood Forest. Their magic has been bound by the Pack’s most ancient oath, leaving them nothing more than mortal wolves. They pose no threat to us, and their disgrace serves as a permanent reminder to any who would contemplate treason.”

Amelia looked relieved that the painful subject was resolved, allowing them to shift focus entirely to resurgence and expansion.

“I want Gareth to extend his patrol deeper into the lower ridges,” Kian stated, circling an area on the map. “Towards the human settlement boundary—the region most recently affected by the rogue attacks. He needs to establish new, deeper checkpoints and confirm that no residual enemy presence remains. We must secure our weakest flanks, and Gareth is the only one I trust to execute that mission.”

Amelia nodded, agreeing with the strategic necessity. “It’s a long run. Make sure he takes provisions.”

Later that evening, Gareth received his new orders directly from the King. He was to scout the lower ridges and the fringes of the Ironwood, establishing three new surveillance posts—a strategic mission that fit perfectly within his purview of duty.

Gareth, a man of pure muscle, discipline, and stark loyalty, found the entire concept of 'a mate' distant and unnecessary. His life was the Pack, his function was protection, and his focus was war. What need have I for comfort when there is duty? he thought as he laced up his heavy boots, preparing for a long, cold night run.

He shifted easily under the pale moonlight, his fur a muted, steel-gray that allowed him to melt into the shadows of the ancient forest. He moved with swift, silent purpose, his senses hyper-alert, assessing wind direction, tracking scent trails, and mapping the terrain in his mind.

Hours passed in his patrol. He secured the first two checkpoints near the old logging trails without incident. The air was crisp, carrying the metallic scent of coming snow. As he approached the final designated area—a small, hidden clearing known for its dense cluster of ancient, twisted oaks—he paused.

A foreign scent hit him, sharp and distinct, cutting through the usual musk of pine and damp earth. It was not wolf, nor rogue, nor human. It was something else—a clean, bright scent, like crushed lavender and ozone after a lightning storm, mixed with the unmistakable, intoxicating sweetness of magic.

Gareth froze, dropping low into the underbrush, his muscles coiling. This area was supposed to be deserted. He advanced silently, stalking the source of the powerful, mesmerizing scent.

He emerged onto the edge of the clearing. The oaks stood like sentinels around a pool of still water. In the center, bathed in a celestial shaft of moonlight, stood a woman.

She was cloaked, her hood drawn up, but the power radiating from her was impossible to miss. Her hands were held out over a cluster of glowing white stones. As she murmured an incantation in a language Gareth had never heard, the air shimmered, and a protective dome of soft, pulsating white light began to descend around the clearing. She was weaving a colossal, permanent ward—right on the boundary of their territory.

He had never seen magic so controlled, so gentle, yet so clearly dominant. He watched, unable to move, a primal, possessive ache beginning to coil tight in his chest.

As the final syllable left her lips, she sighed, lowered her arms, and turned. Her eyes, wide and startlingly emerald green, snapped directly to his hidden spot in the shadows. A flash of pure alarm crossed her face, and she tightened her cloak, clearly preparing to vanish or flee.

Gareth knew the slightest delay would lose her. Without a moment's hesitation, he surged forward, his gray fur dissolving as he hit the clearing's edge, shifting instantly to his human form. He stood naked, tall, and imposing in the moonlight, his voice deep and resonant, cutting through the silence.

“Mate, it’s our mate. Don’t scare her. We were looking for her. Gareth’s wolf mind linked me.

“I know. Let me handle this. I don’t want her to run away from us. By looking at you, she might get scared. That’s why I shifted to my human form.”

“Wait! I mean you no harm. Please don’t run. What’s your name!”
