Alpha King of Ruin and Desire

Chapter 6

Ch. 6 / 150 Dec 30, 2025

The tension in the Nightshade fortress became a tangible, suffocating weight. After the accidental contact that had flared Kian's old shoulder wound, Amelia and Kian instinctively treated the conference room like a minefield. They communicated across the long table using laser pointers, careful never to cross the sacred ten-foot perimeter.

This enforced distance, however, did nothing to cool the raging fire of their mate bond.

If anything, the prohibition fueled the desire, transforming their strategic partnership into an agonizingly intimate dance.

They spent hours dissecting Zoran’s movements, but the real work happened on a different, non-verbal plane. Amelia’s focus would inevitably drift, catching Kian’s profile as he studied a document: the harsh, aristocratic lines of his jaw, the thick fall of dark hair that always seemed to escape its collar, the sheer, frightening muscle mass visible even beneath the heavy fabric of his coat.

She didn't just see a powerful Alpha; she saw the little boy who watched his mother suffer, the man who had chosen utter loneliness to protect others.

And Kian saw beyond the calculated venom of the exiled Luna.

He saw the flicker of raw pain in her eyes whenever he mentioned her father’s complacency, and he saw the deep, principled loyalty in the way she refused to compromise on the purity of their vengeance. He felt her anxiety—a low thrumming of dread that mirrored his own—through the bond, a constant, low-level ache that was distinct from the curse's sharp reflection.

One evening, they were discussing the logistics of infiltrating a Council meeting. Kian was pacing, his massive strides eating up the space at his end of the room. Amelia was seated, trying to decipher a coded ledger entry.

“The key is to leverage the traditionalist Morvanes,” Kian murmured, his focus intense. “The ones who still respect the old rites. Zoran’s marriage to Theodora violated protocol; a True Mate bond, even a contract one, carries far more weight.”

Amelia felt the subtle shift in the air as he paced. His scent, usually a controllable background note, suddenly intensified, wrapping around her like an invisible embrace. It was the scent of possessiveness, of warning, of heat. It was overpowering.

Amelia’s breath hitched. Her wolf, desperate for the man emitting the scent, let out a deep, internal growl.

Her skin flushed hot, and the blood rushed audibly in her ears. She dropped the digital reader, the clatter on the wooden table a sharp interruption to the building tension.

Kian stopped mid-stride, his back to her, instantly freezing. He knew exactly what had happened. His pacing had deliberately pushed the boundaries of the olfactory limits, testing the constraint he had placed on himself.

“Amelia,” he commanded, his voice tight, his wolf's dominance cracking through the human language. “Get control.”

“I am controlled,” she shot back, her voice shaking with forced composure. She stood up, needing the movement to counter the paralyzing heat. “I am not the one who broke the protocol by pacing into the hot zone. You are projecting, Alpha Sterling.”

He turned, slowly, dangerously.

His eyes were no longer emerald; they were blazing gold, radiating unchecked Alpha power. The curse may have forbidden touch, but it had weaponized their every other sense.

“You are wearing a scent I recognize,” Kian said, his voice dropping to a gravelly, intimate low. “Lavender and something sharp—lemon zest. It is a scent from my memory. My mother used to wear it.”

Amelia froze. She hadn't consciously chosen the perfume; it was an old bottle her mother had given her years ago.

The fact that he recognized it, that the scent was tied to his deepest, most painful memory, was terrifying proof of the bond’s deep roots.

“I am not your mother, Kian,” Amelia whispered, the use of his first name slipping out instinctively. “I am your mate. And you are deliberately using proximity and scent to torment me.”

Kian’s control shattered. He launched himself forward, not moving to touch her, but stopping exactly one foot from the table’s edge, leaning over the polished wood, his hands planted flat on the surface.

The table became the barrier, the physical symbol of their impossible reality.

He was so close that Amelia could feel the heat radiating off his massive chest, smell the dark, irresistible musk of his arousal, and see the minute tremor in his hands.

“I am trying to determine if you are strong enough for this hell,” he ground out, his voice a struggle between the King and the Mate. “I need to know if your resolve is as cold as you pretend. Because every single decision we make, every risk we take, is amplified by this damn curse. I can feel your heart racing, Thorne. I can feel the fear and the corresponding hunger. And I know precisely what you are thinking.”

He leaned closer, his voice dropping to a whisper that bypassed her ears and settled directly in her core.

“You are wondering what it would feel like to feel my weight on you, to have my mouth on yours, to have the life-force choked out of you by my wolf’s claim. And I, Amelia, am wondering how quickly I would kill you if I took you right here, right now.”

The raw, violent honesty was more intimate than any embrace. Amelia didn't back down. The fear was there, yes, but it was eclipsed by a fierce, answering desire that burned away her political chill. She leaned forward too, her body mirroring his across the wooden divide, putting her neck out, exposing her pulse point, challenging his self-control.

“You won’t kill me,” Amelia breathed out, her eyes blazing with mirrored heat. “Because I am your purpose now, Alpha Sterling. And you, terrifying, cold, and cursed King—you are mine. Find the cure, Kian. Find the cure, and then we will see who claims whom.”

Kian stared at her for a long, agonizing moment.

The silence was heavy with the weight of unspent violence and suppressed desire. He finally pulled back, slamming his chair against the wall as he turned away, retreating to the solitude of his strategy board, the ten-foot gap re-established, but the barrier between them was irrevocably breached.
