“I am sorry, Mr. Blackwood but I cannot continue to work for you. I wish to resign from the company.” Anna replied.
Mr. Blackwood couldn’t mistake this for a joke, the look on her face told her seriousness. But he was just confused, why, when and how? What brought about this?
“Miss Ann, I am in no mood for jokes, let's be serious right now.” Mr. Blackwood demanded, trying his luck.
Anna sighed and shook her head. “I wouldn’t joke over something like this, Mr. Blackwood. I quit, I want out.” She whispered.
“And why, if I may ask?” he fired at her, trying hard to stay calm and not overreact at the moment.
Anna hesitated, either she didn’t know what to say or she didn’t want to say it. “I am sorry, reasons are best known to me.” She replied in a mutter of words, looking away from him.
Mr. Blackwood scratched his head and inhaled deeply, it was so difficult to stay calm at the moment, he tried hard not to lash out on her.
“Is it because of what I said back in your office? I know you are not that kind of a dummy but just to be clear, I didn’t mean that. You know I can never say that your six months here wasn’t worth a celebration.” He explained.
Anna huffed and shook her head. “I would be silly to quit over your remarks, I am not resigning because you said I have done nothing in the past six months? That would be a stupid thing to do.” She confessed.
“Well, then why are you resigning? Give me something to hold on to because I have no idea why you choose to quit your job. If it is not something I said, then what is it?” He asked in curiosity.
“Wait!” he suddenly muttered with wide eyes and looked up at her. “Is it because of the conditions attached to your employment? Are you leaving because you do not wish to fulfill those conditions anymore?” he queried.
Anna paused, the hesitance in her eyes as she was reluctant to speak. After a while, she responded, “What if it was? What would you do about it? Would you take off the conditions if it was why I am choosing to quit?” she asked anxiously.
Mr. Blackwood pushed back his chair and gently stroked his beard, his eyes stuck on her. Anyone could tell that he was masking his true expressions with that calm poker face. He slowly got up and turned his back to her, looking out to the city through the glass wall.
Anna stood there patiently, waiting for his response. Her heart was racing as she never knew what to expect. She might have known him for six months but he was still very unpredictable, especially when he was calm like this.
Mr. Blackwood took two steps to the left, and then he slowly turned to face her, those gray eyes burning like never before, and then he chuckled in sarcasm. He couldn’t tell if she was really leaving for the conditions but he was not willing to do her bidding either.
It wasn’t like he couldn’t make the choice to not sleep with her anymore, but he wouldn’t do it because she asked him to, because she demanded for it, he had too much of a pride to take that off on her wish, especially as an ultimatum.
“No!” he blurted out. “I wouldn’t remove those conditions, Miss Ann. Because you see, I am the Boss around here, I don’t take instructions from anyone, especially not you.”
Anna scoffed and shook her head. “Of course,” she laughed softly with her face down. “That is what I thought, Mr. Blackwood. But if you must know, I wouldn’t have changed my mind either way. At this point, it is not just about fucking me when and how you please, I just cant work with you anymore, Mr. Blackwood, I am sorry.”
Mr. Blackwood huffed in disbelief and shook his head, he dipped his hand into his pant pockets and turned his back to her again. It was like he was taking his time to make his decision, maybe not to say something that he would regret in a hurry.
“So that is it then? You are going to fucking quit?” he yelled, unable to hold the rage back anymore as he turned to face her.
Anna shivered in her boots but she held herself together and stayed calm.
Mr. Blackwood came closer to her and walked around her slowly but she didn’t move or turn from her position, she stood there nervously and let him vent.
“Tell me, Miss Ann,” he began, “Why are you doing this? You want me to beg you to stay, don’t you?” he asked as he walked back to her face.
“I didn’t say that.” Anna replied in a whisper. Although she loved to hear him ask her to stay, maybe if he does, she could have a change of mind.
“But that is what you want!” he yelled in her face. He took a deep breath and walked back. “You want me to tell you how important you are to this company and beg you to stay, that is where you get it all wrong, you overhype your importance to this company.”
“Max, I didn’t…”
“Let me speak!” he cut her short. “Annabel Joseph, if you are hoping I would beg you to stay, then let me disappoint you, I don’t care if you stay or leave, I am not going to beg you or try to convince you. if you want to leave, then go already.” He ordered, pointing to the door.
Anna nodded, fighting back the tears in her eyes. She hated to piss him off like this but she had to do it, if she left on bad terms with him, then he will never come looking for her and she can move past him.
“Thank you Sir.” she replied in a soft voice with her head bowed as she turned around to leave. She had already made it to the door when he called her name and she stopped to look in his direction.
“If you take your things, and you step out of this company gate, you will not ever be welcomed back here. Is that clear, Miss Ann?” he asked in a cold voice, anger burning in his eyes.
Annabel nodded gently and swallowed saliva, then she turned around and walked away.
“Fuck!” Mr. Blackwood cursed out loud and kicked the air in frustration. How dare she?
He immediately picked up his phone to call Megan.
