The Viking's Mate Hunt

CHAPTER 114

Ch. 114 / 180 Apr 22, 2026

"Drifta!"

I hissed her name through my teeth, never taking my eyes on the massive beast now stalking towards us. From the moment I saw him over my shoulder, I started running zigzag through the threes, and the moment I thought I managed to create some space between us, he jumped out right in front of me. Drifta stirred, and I could feel how anxious she was, but that didn't help me because she still refused to shift or even answer me.

Crawling backward through the mossy ground, I kept my eyes on the wolf. He is genuinely massive; not even the alpha wolves came close to him. Snarling, he stalked closer, blood still dripping down his snow-white fur. Canines bared; his jaw snapped shut, making his low growling resemble an angry cat's sound. The beast kept making small jumps in my direction in between the stalking, with his head held low, jumping forward, lowering his front paws like he was edging me to either run or play. Confused, I kept my eyes on his eyes, black and soulless, like endless pits of pain and evil etching through my flesh and soul.

I couldn't help the pathetic cry that escaped my mouth as his paw suddenly jabbed her foot. Massive claws cut through leather and clothing like a hot knife through butter, but luckily, they barely scraped my skin. Jumping backward, I crawled faster, almost like those haunted people walking the wrong way on all fours, because I could not take my eyes off him for the life of me. Afraid it would be the last thing I did. Unfortunately, this seemed to fuel something, and he began swatting at my feet, scraping me up from my legs down over and over again. Forcing me further and further in between the threes, and I finally realize I have to get up, have to take a chance and get up.

Before I managed to get up, he jumped up next to me and pushed me over. Walking around me in a half circle, pushing me over, and keeping me from regaining balance and getting up.

"What the hell do you want!"

I let the frustration get the best of me, and I swear that freaking monster smiled before almost running right into me and making me fall over again. But this time, I rolled around and jumped to my feet, crouching face to face with the snarling white beast while countering his movements. Making us go around like a bad fight scene is about to happen. What the hell am I thinking? If I can't shift, this creature could kill me just with his weight alone. I straightened up and stared up at him, and he didn't like that. A deep, threatening sound rumbled in his chest, and again, he did that strange jumping forward and retreating, forcing me a couple of steps back. Then it hit me: he wanted me to run, to hunt me down, and I gritted my teeth. I thought I had done my part of the Hunt and had no intention of playing his, their game.

"I'm not running! Stop! You overgrown fur ball! Stop!"

I kept yelling as he advanced towards me, tried brushing past me so close it would make me fall over again, but like a miracle, I managed to keep on my feet only to have his claws slice through my clothes again on the opposite side of my feet. I kept yelling, demanding he stops, letting frustration overlap the crippling fear that had my body in an iron grip just minutes ago. I am so sick of this place, so sick of these men and monsters! Lashing out, I managed to hit the wolf right in his ear, and he roared only to provide me another second, and I kicked as hard as I could. My foot connected beneath his jaw, slamming shut that horrifying mouth of razor-sharp canines and a crushing sound, and it filled me with a grim sense of satisfaction.

It felt like I watched in slow motion as the white beast jumped straight at me. Just then the world around us started to shatter. Branches fell to the ground around us, and even a couple of threes fell to the land around us. For a couple of seconds, the sudden change almost swept me off my feet as the wind around us grew in strength. Like a little tornado pushing me down towards the ground, and to my relief, this stopped the white wolf, and he looked up to the sky with his head tilted to the side. However, before I could follow his lead and look up, I was yanked off the ground. Massive and scaly hands, or feet, or what it is called, grabbed me around my waist, and before I managed to take a new breath, the white wolf and forest became so far away. With each second, the white wolf turned into a white dot in the middle of the woods.

A scream I had no control over had left me as I was swooped off the ground, but now I only stared down as the white dot followed our tracks in between the trees, around bushes, and jumping over massive logs like they were nothing but toothpicks.

I had to admit, I didn't realize what happened at first, but now my heart swelled. Seb. or Amon saved me; I should stop using the name he dislikes just to spite him, I reprimanded myself. Because he came back for me after all! He didn't have to; nobody would blame him if he just left this mess, but he didn't. Relieved and happy, I didn't care that the cold wind whipped my face and hair in all directions. Didn't care that his scaly dragon claws felt rough and rugged on my skin and body. All I cared about was him; he came for me, and I found myself in a strange bliss I could not explain.

Despite the wind burning my eyes and tears falling down my cheeks, I could see everything so much better from up here. How massive this land was, the forest, the burning village, and the vast ocean. Then I saw it, the ship! My heart made another jump, but if it was excitement or fear, I'm not sure. Some of me wanted to greet the ship and the people coming with it; another part was skeptical. What if this was the twin's ship? That could ruin everything. Right now, this pack was holding the fight up, defending their place, but a ship full of people would tip that scale. My head jerked to the side, to my shoulder, where the warm liquid hit.

It all happened so fast that I didn't even feel fear. Looking up, the truth hit me in the face hard. All the blood on the wolf's white fur it; was Amon's. Suddenly, it was so clear that he was hurt. The way he flew, sharp turns, short sudden drops, not gliding across the sky like he had done earlier. The blood poured down and colored the beautiful blue scales, so they looked like they were black. Like small streams down a wild mountain, the blood split into smaller rivers covering his scales, and when I looked down, on myself this time, I could see my skin and clothes were already stained with a deep red color.

Then my world started moving so fast, the harsh wind scraped my cheeks and he roared. Maybe he did before, I don't know. I didn't even understand that I was falling, I floated in limbo, where my head and mind blanked out. I moved in slow motion while everything rushed past me so fast, I wanted to be sick. Literally falling straight into my fuzzy limbo, a massive blue figure called me back to reality. Falling, he was falling! But so was I!

Even when every single fiber in my body screamed at me not to, I looked down. And the ground closed in so quickly, but Amon was falling quicker. Limp and heavy, he rushed past me. Plummeted towards the ground like a massive stone thrown from the mountainside. I couldn't even see if his eyes were open!

Panic spread like wildfire in my chest and pumped through my hands and feet. My fingertips felt numb, ice cold from the wind, throbbing and numbing as the increasing anxiety worked up my panic together with pure fear. Fear of death, fear of falling, hitting the ground, and pain.

But there was also a different kind of fear making it all so much worse, The fear for Seb. Amon's life! It hurt in another way; it hurt places I didn't know could hurt. The fear of losing him. I wanted to cry and let the hurt raging inside my chest out, but the forceful wind made it hard just to breathe. I wanted to touch him and be with him when we died, but the force the wind created made me paralyzed. No matter how hard I tried, my body would not move, and when a muscle first did, I had no control over it. Uncontrollable and staggering ticks make my hands and feet move in strange ways and directions.

All I could do, was all my eyes and mind did while muscle spasms attacked my entire body.

A bright light blinded me completely and blinked between Amon and me until I saw nothing but white. Bright white and no matter how hard I blinked, it remained unchanged. If I could manage to draw my breath, or had any oxygen left in my lungs at all, I would have screamed again. The impact alone knocked whatever might have been left of air in me, for a moment I thought I died. That I hit the ground without knowing, or that a car ran me over. The heavy crash around my waist came from nowhere and flew out of thin air.

I moved the wrong way, it all changed. I'm no longer falling down, I'm falling sideways. It didn't make sense, but my head felt heavy. The tunnel shrank so fast. Dark shadows closed in as the flashing white light faded in the distance. I knew this feeling I thought as I saw the utter darkness spreading in front of me, fainting. Or maybe this will be the time I die. My muscles still spasmed, my entire chest ached, threatened to explode, and I needed air. How sarcastic. I am suffocating, dying of lack of oxygen falling through the air.

The last thing I saw before my eyes closed was a blue dragon only inches from hitting the ground so far, far away.
