The dim light of the hotel suite flickered eerily as the police stormed in, weapons drawn, their eyes scanning every corner for signs of danger. The heavy thud of boots echoed in the opulent room, but the stark silence inside was unsettling. Damian lay crumpled on the floor in a pool of blood, his eyes staring blankly at the ceiling. The sharp, metallic tang of blood filled the air, and the officers froze momentarily at the gruesome sight.
“Clear!” one of them shouted after checking the immediate area. But it was far from over.
Elena, who had insisted on being part of the operation, stepped inside cautiously, her eyes narrowing as she took in the scene. Zaiden, against all protocol, had followed closely behind. His chest tightened at the sight of Damian’s lifeless body, but his attention was immediately drawn to the items scattered around the room—evidence that Alessia had been there.
“Check everywhere!” Elena barked, her voice sharp. “She has to be close!”
Zaiden’s eyes darted around, locking on a small pile of baby clothes on a chair. Next to them was an open pack of diapers, a half-empty bottle of formula, and a pacifier. His heart sank at the sight, realizing Alessia had been here recently. His hands trembled as he approached the makeshift setup. The crib pushed against the wall looked hastily assembled, its mattress still warm.
“She was here,” Zaiden choked out, his voice cracking. “She was right here.”
Elena knelt beside the crib, her keen eyes scanning for clues. A hospital monitor beeped softly in the corner, hooked to a portable machine. The sight made her frown. “What is this doing here?” she murmured.
Zaiden glanced over. It was a portable heart monitor, its wires tangled and haphazardly disconnected. Nearby, a bag of medical supplies lay half-unpacked—IV fluids, syringes, and antiseptics.
“This equipment is for premature infants or those needing constant monitoring,” Elena muttered, piecing it together. “Was Alessia sick? Did they… did they hurt her?”
Zaiden clenched his fists. The thought of his baby needing medical attention, of strangers using such equipment on her, filled him with rage. “If they’ve done anything to her—”
“Zaiden!” Tobias’s voice interrupted from the adjacent room. “Over here!”
Zaiden and Elena rushed into the room, their boots crunching over broken glass from a shattered vase. Tobias was holding up a piece of paper, his face grim.
“They left a note,” he said, handing it to Elena.
Her hands shook slightly as she read aloud:
“Damian couldn’t keep his promises. Now we hold Alessia as collateral. Do not come looking, or she’ll suffer for his mistakes.”
Zaiden’s legs nearly gave out. He grabbed the edge of the table to steady himself, his breathing uneven. “No,” he whispered. “No, no, no! This can’t be happening!”
Elena folded the note carefully, her face a mask of concentration despite the turmoil brewing beneath. “They’re trying to throw us off,” she said firmly. “But this gives us a clue. Whoever they are, they wanted something from Damian. He failed, and now they’ve taken Alessia. This wasn’t random.”
Zaiden’s desperation broke through his anger. “What promises? What did Damian owe them? Why involve Alessia? She’s just a baby!” His voice cracked, and he gripped the edge of the table so tightly his knuckles turned white.
Jonathan stepped into the room, his expression equally grim. “We’ve got signs of a forced exit. Back door. They must’ve taken her out before we got here. No cameras in the service corridors—they planned this.”
Zaiden swore under his breath, pacing back and forth like a caged animal. “Then what are we waiting for? Let’s track them down!”
Elena stepped into his path, her eyes blazing. “We will find her, Zaiden, but we need to be smart. Damian’s death complicates things. We don’t know who we’re dealing with yet.”
Zaiden jabbed a finger toward Damian’s body. “He’s dead, and Alessia is gone. How am I supposed to sit here and wait for answers? She needs me!”
