The hospital room buzzed with quiet activity as nurses moved efficiently around Victoria, checking monitors and prepping supplies. Zayden sat at her bedside, gripping her hand tightly, his eyes flickering between her face and the machines. Victoria, her face glistening with sweat, exhaled deeply after another contraction passed.
“You’re doing amazing, Vic,” Zayden said, his voice filled with a mix of awe and nervous energy. “I mean, seriously. Superwoman over here.”
Victoria shot him a tired but amused look. “Flattery’s nice, Zay, but I’d prefer a smoothie and a nap right about now.”
Zayden chuckled, brushing a stray curl from her forehead. “Noted. Smoothie and nap, first thing after we meet this little guy.”
“I’ll hold you to that,” Victoria said, leaning back as another contraction built. She winced, squeezing Zayden’s hand hard enough to make him wince, too.
“Okay, okay,” Zayden muttered, wincing playfully. “Remind me never to challenge you to an arm-wrestling contest.”
Victoria managed a weak laugh. “You wouldn’t stand a chance even on a normal day.”
Before Zayden could retort, the doctor walked in, glancing at the monitors and then at Victoria. “Alright, looks like we’re almost there. Are you ready to meet your son?”
Victoria nodded, her eyes shining despite the exhaustion. “More than ready.”
Zayden grinned, though his grip on her hand tightened. “Let’s do this.”
The next hour was a whirlwind of effort and emotion. Zayden stood by Victoria’s side the entire time, offering words of encouragement that ranged from heartfelt to downright goofy.
“You’re incredible, Vic,” he said during one particularly strong contraction. “Seriously, I don’t think I could even run a mile, let alone do what you’re doing.”
Victoria, mid-push, shot him a glare. “Zayden. Shut up.”
“Right,” he said quickly. “Shutting up.”
Despite the pain and chaos, Victoria powered through, her determination unwavering. Finally, a sharp cry pierced the room, and the doctor smiled. “He’s here!”
Tears filled Victoria’s eyes as she collapsed back against the bed, her chest heaving. Zayden looked like he was caught between laughter and tears as the doctor lifted a squirming, red-faced baby into the air.
“Meet your son,” the doctor said, placing the tiny bundle onto Victoria’s chest.
“Oh my God,” Victoria whispered, her voice trembling. She cradled the baby close, her fingers tracing the soft, wrinkled skin of his cheek. “He’s perfect.”
Zayden leaned down, his face inches from the baby’s. “Hey, little man,” he said softly, his voice thick with emotion. “Welcome to the world.”
The baby let out another cry, his tiny fists waving in the air, and Zayden laughed through his tears. “He’s got a set of lungs on him, doesn’t he?”
Victoria smiled, tears streaming down her face. “Definitely takes after you.”
A while later, after the baby was cleaned up and swaddled in a soft blue blanket, Zayden sat in a chair beside the bed, holding him for the first time. The baby’s eyes blinked open briefly, dark and curious, before fluttering shut again.
“Zane,” Zayden said suddenly, the name rolling off his tongue as if it had been waiting all along. He looked at Victoria. “What do you think? Zane. Strong, simple. It fits him.”
Victoria smiled, her eyes soft as she watched Zayden cradle their son. “Zane,” she repeated. “I love it.”
Zayden grinned, leaning down to kiss her forehead. “Zane it is, then.”
At that moment, the door creaked open, and Elena peeked in, holding Alessia’s hand. “Can we come in?”
“Of course,” Victoria said, her voice still tired but full of joy. “Come meet Zane.”
Alessia tiptoed into the room, her eyes wide as she climbed onto the bed beside Victoria. Elena hovered nearby, her usual confident demeanor softened by the sight of her new nephew.
“Is that him?” Alessia whispered, pointing at the baby.
Victoria nodded, adjusting the blanket around Zane. “This is your baby brother, Alessia. His name is Zane.”
Alessia leaned in close, her nose almost touching Zane’s. “Hi, Zane,” she said softly, her voice full of wonder. “I’m your big sister.”
Zane let out a tiny coo, and Alessia giggled. “He’s so small!”
“Not for long,” Zayden said, handing Zane back to Victoria. “Soon he’ll be running around and stealing your toys.”
Alessia frowned, looking up at him. “He can have some of my toys. Not all.”
“Deal,” Victoria said, laughing as she kissed Alessia’s forehead. “You’re going to be the best big sister.”
Elena leaned against the wall, arms crossed, a rare softness in her gaze. “Alright, I’ll admit it. He’s pretty cute. But don’t let him get too spoiled, okay?”
Zayden smirked. “Coming from the queen of spoiling Alessia? Noted.”
As the evening went on, the room settled into a peaceful calm. Zane slept soundly in Victoria’s arms, Alessia curled up next to her, holding onto the edge of the baby’s blanket. Zayden sat nearby, his hand resting on Victoria’s knee as they exchanged quiet smiles.
“This,” Victoria said softly, looking around the room. “This is everything.”
Zayden nodded, his eyes fixed on his family. “Yeah, it is.”
Zane stirred in his sleep, letting out a tiny sigh, and Zayden grinned. “He’s already stealing the show.”
Victoria laughed quietly, leaning her head against his shoulder. “He’s allowed. Just this once.”
In that moment, surrounded by love and the quiet sounds of their children, Victoria and Zayden felt a deep sense of gratitude. Their family was complete—or at least for now—and the future felt brighter than ever.
