Victoria’s heart raced as Zayden leaned closer, his face soft but serious. His warm hand clasped hers tightly, and his voice was steady, though she could hear the emotion beneath it.
“Tori,” he began, his eyes locking onto hers, “the baby is fine. She’s alive.”
The words hit her like a tidal wave, crashing through the fear and uncertainty that had been suffocating her. Relief flooded her, but it was quickly replaced by confusion. “What do you mean? Is she… is she okay?”
Zayden hesitated, taking a deep breath before answering. “She was born prematurely, Tori. After you collapsed, the doctors had to perform an emergency C-section to save both of you. She’s in the NICU now, but she’s strong. She’s fighting.”
Victoria’s breath hitched, tears welling in her eyes as her hand instinctively moved to her now-flattened belly. Her fingers trembled as she grasped the hospital blanket, processing his words. “She’s here? She’s… already here?”
“Yes,” Zayden said softly, squeezing her hand. “She’s here, and she’s beautiful.”
A sob escaped her lips, and the tears spilled freely down her cheeks. The relief, the joy, the overwhelming gratitude—it all hit her at once, and she couldn’t hold it back. “She survived,” she whispered, her voice breaking. “I thought… I thought I’d lost her.”
Zayden leaned in, wrapping his arms around her and holding her tightly. “She’s a fighter, just like her mom.”
Victoria clung to him, her tears soaking into his shirt. “I want to see her,” she said, her voice trembling but determined. “Please, Zayden. I need to see her.”
Zayden pulled back, brushing the tears from her cheeks. “I’ll take you to her,” he promised. “But you need to take it slow. You’ve been through a lot, and I don’t want you pushing yourself too hard.”
Victoria nodded, her heart pounding with anticipation. “I’ll do whatever it takes. I just need to see her.”
The journey to the NICU felt like an eternity, even though it was just a short ride in a wheelchair. The sterile scent of the hospital hallways and the faint hum of medical equipment heightened her anxiety. Zayden walked beside her, his hand resting reassuringly on her shoulder as he guided her into the unit.
When they arrived, the sight before her took her breath away. Rows of tiny incubators lined the room, each one carefully monitored by nurses and filled with delicate babies fighting their own battles. Zayden led her to one near the corner, and her heart nearly stopped when she saw her daughter.
The baby was impossibly small, her tiny body swaddled in a blanket and surrounded by tubes and wires. Her chest rose and fell with each fragile breath, and her little hands rested peacefully by her sides.
“She’s so tiny,” Victoria whispered, tears streaming down her face. “Is she… is she okay?”
Zayden crouched beside her, his voice gentle. “She’s doing great, Tori. The doctors are optimistic. Her lungs are strong, and she’s responding well to the treatments.”
Victoria reached out tentatively, her fingers brushing against the glass of the incubator. She wanted to hold her, to feel her skin against hers, but she didn’t want to disrupt the delicate setup that was keeping her daughter alive. “Can I… can I touch her?”
A nurse appeared, smiling kindly. “Of course,” she said. “You can reach in through the openings. Just be gentle.”
Victoria nodded, her hands trembling as she slipped them through the access ports in the incubator. When her fingers finally brushed against her daughter’s hand, a sob escaped her lips. The baby’s skin was so soft, so warm, and the moment their connection was made, Victoria felt a wave of love so powerful it stole her breath.
“She’s perfect,” Victoria whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “She’s so perfect.”
Zayden placed a hand on her shoulder, his own eyes glassy. “She looks like you,” he said with a soft smile. “Strong and beautiful.”
Victoria laughed through her tears, shaking her head. “She’s so much more than I ever imagined. I was so scared I’d never get to meet her.”
“You’re here now,” Zayden said, his voice steady. “And so is she. You’ve both made it through.”
The baby’s tiny hand twitched, and Victoria’s heart swelled. She spoke softly, her voice trembling with affection. “Hey there, little one. It’s me, your mom. I’ve been waiting to meet you.”
The baby’s breathing seemed to steady at the sound of her voice, and Victoria’s tears continued to flow. She felt a deep connection to this fragile life, a bond stronger than anything she’d ever experienced.
“I love you so much,” Victoria whispered. “I promise, I’ll protect you. No matter what.”
Zayden knelt beside her, his arm around her shoulders as they gazed at their daughter together. “She’s a fighter,” he said again. “Just like her mom.”
Victoria nodded, her heart full. “And she’s not doing it alone. We’re going to give her everything she needs.”
