The Man They Killed Just Walked In

The Truth Comes Out

Ch. 16 / 20 Apr 18, 2025

Lena’s POV

“Tell me what you’re hiding.”

Zeke’s voice was sharp, demanding.

I swallowed hard, my pulse hammering in my ears. I never wanted him to find out. I never wanted anyone to know.

But the second he spoke that name—Dominic Greco—I knew I had no choice.

The truth was out.

I felt his grip tighten around my wrist, not painful, but firm—like he knew I was thinking about running. Like he expected me to.

I had spent years running.

But there was no running from this.

I lifted my gaze to his, forcing myself to say the words that would change everything.

“He’s my father.”

Silence.

The air in the room turned ice cold. Zeke didn’t move. Didn’t even blink. Then, slowly, he exhaled.

He let go of me like I burned him.

I took a shaky breath, wrapping my arms around myself, bracing for the storm.

Zeke took a step back, his jaw tight, his eyes unreadable. His expression was too controlled—too blank.

It was worse than if he had started yelling.

For the first time since I’d met him, I couldn’t tell what he was thinking.

Finally, he spoke.

“You were working for him that night, weren’t you?”

The words cut through me like a blade.

I forced myself to meet his gaze, even though my throat felt like it was closing. “I didn’t know what he had planned. I swear.”

Zeke let out a quiet laugh. A bitter, humorless thing.

He shook his head, his hands flexing at his sides like he was fighting the urge to punch something.

“You expect me to believe that?”

The accusation in his voice made my chest ache.

“I’m telling you the truth.” My voice was softer now, but there was desperation beneath it. “I didn’t know, Zeke. I wasn’t part of it.”

He stared at me, searching, but I could tell—he wasn’t sure if he believed me.

It didn’t matter.

Because in that moment, he wasn’t just looking at me like I was a mystery to solve.

He was looking at me like I was his enemy.

I took a step forward, reaching for him. “Zeke—”

He moved back.

The rejection stung more than I expected.

I clenched my fists at my sides, trying to steady myself. “I was there that night because I was investigating the Donahue family. My father had secrets. Your father had secrets. I wasn’t working for him, I was trying to find proof of what he was doing.”

His eyes flashed with something unreadable. “And what exactly was he doing?”

I hesitated. Zeke noticed. His expression hardened.

“Then tell me, Lena—why did he want my family dead?”
