The Lies That Binds

Fault Lines

Ch. 8 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

Piper sat at the dining table, the papers spread out before her like a battlefield. Divorce agreements, preliminary custody documents, legal jargon she barely understood — all of it blended into a blur of ink and exhaustion. The enormity of what she was doing sank deeper into her bones with each passing day. She knew leaving Jasper was the right decision. There was no way to salvage a marriage built on deceit, resentment, and unspoken truths. But knowing what was right didn’t make it any easier.

Lily sat on the floor nearby, humming to herself as she colored. Watching her, Piper’s chest tightened. Everything she did — every agonizing choice — was for her daughter, even if it didn’t always feel like that. The thought of sharing custody with Jasper filled her with dread. The courts would soon divide up not just her time but the entire fabric of her life, and that included Lily. But beyond the logistical fears, a deeper, more personal fear gnawed at her — what if Lily grew closer to Jasper through this process? What if, one day, Piper wasn’t the one Lily turned to when things got tough?

The sound of tires crunching on the gravel driveway pulled her from her spiraling thoughts. She tensed instinctively. Jasper had dropped Lily off earlier in the morning, saying he had some errands to run. Now, however, it was far too soon for him to be back. Piper rose slowly, her pulse quickening as she peeked out the window.

Jasper’s sleek black car was parked by the curb, but it wasn’t him who stepped out of the passenger side. It was Autumn.

Piper’s breath caught in her throat. She watched them for a moment too long, heart hammering as Autumn brushed her long blonde hair behind her ear and leaned in toward Jasper, her hand briefly resting on his arm. Jasper said something that made Autumn smile — a soft, wistful smile that Piper had never been able to coax out of him.

The familiar stab of jealousy twisted in Piper’s gut. She hated feeling this way, but the sight of them together was unbearable. Jasper didn’t smile at her like that anymore. Maybe he never had.

The front door creaked as Jasper stepped inside, followed closely by Autumn. Piper moved quickly, pretending to busy herself with the dishes in the sink.

“Hey,” Jasper called from the foyer, his voice casual, as if bringing his old flame into the house was perfectly normal.

Piper forced a tight smile over her shoulder. “You’re back early.”

Jasper walked into the kitchen, holding a small bouquet of sunflowers in one hand. They were Lily’s favorite, not Piper’s, and yet something about the gesture made her stomach twist.

“Autumn needed to grab something she left last time she visited.” He set the flowers on the counter as if they were a peace offering, though Piper wasn’t sure peace was even an option between them anymore.

“Hi, Piper.” Autumn’s voice was soft, almost cautious, as if she knew her presence was unwelcome.

“Autumn,” Piper replied coolly, giving her the barest of glances. She could feel the tension between them, sharp and heavy, like a drawn wire waiting to snap.

Lily came bounding in from the other room, her face lighting up when she saw Autumn. “Auntie Autumn!” she squealed, launching herself into the blonde woman’s arms.

Piper’s heart ached as she watched the easy way Lily clung to Autumn, as if she belonged. As if Autumn were family.

“Hey, sweet pea!” Autumn hugged Lily tightly, the affection between them genuine and easy. Piper’s jealousy flared again, hot and irrational. Autumn had left years ago, yet here she was, sliding effortlessly back into their lives as if she had every right to be here.

Jasper cleared his throat, glancing awkwardly between the two women. “I’ll take Autumn upstairs to grab her things. We won’t be long.”

Piper nodded, her lips pressed into a thin line. She watched them retreat upstairs, her mind racing with questions she didn’t dare voice aloud. Why was Autumn here again? Why did she still have things in their house? And more importantly, why did Jasper let her keep coming back?

She knew she had no right to be jealous. They were getting divorced. Autumn’s presence shouldn’t bother her. But it did. It bothered her more than she wanted to admit.

The afternoon dragged on. Piper couldn’t concentrate on anything after Autumn left, her mind looping through every moment she’d witnessed between Jasper and his ex — the way they talked in hushed tones, the familiar glances, the small touches that felt far too intimate for “just friends.”

By the time Noah arrived to drop off some papers for the custody case, Piper’s nerves were frayed.

“You okay?” Noah asked as he stepped inside. He was holding a manila folder, but his sharp green eyes focused entirely on her. He’d always had a way of noticing when she was upset, even when she tried to hide it.

“Yeah,” Piper lied, forcing a smile. “Just a long day.”

Noah set the folder down on the table, crossing his arms as he studied her with a mixture of concern and curiosity. “You don’t have to pretend with me, Piper.”

The kindness in his voice was almost too much. Before she knew it, she was spilling everything — about Jasper, about Autumn, about the suffocating jealousy that gnawed at her every time she saw them together.

Noah listened quietly, his expression thoughtful. When she finished, he let out a slow breath. “You’re still in love with him, aren’t you?”

Piper recoiled as if she’d been slapped. “No,” she protested, too quickly. “It’s not that. It’s just... everything feels so complicated.”

Noah gave her a small, understanding smile. “It always is, with feelings like these.”

She hated how easily he saw through her. Hated how much comfort she found in his presence, even though she knew it was dangerous. Noah was steady, reliable, and far too easy to lean on.

And leaning on him was starting to feel like more than just emotional support.

“You know I’m here for you, right?” Noah said softly, stepping closer. His gaze held hers, steady and sincere. “Whatever happens with Jasper, I’ll be here. For you. And for Lily.”

Piper’s heart twisted. She wanted to believe him. Wanted to let herself fall into the safety he offered. But a small voice in the back of her mind whispered caution. What if Noah’s kindness wasn’t as selfless as it seemed? What if he was just waiting for the right moment to stake his claim?

As if sensing her hesitation, Noah reached out and gently took her hand. His touch was warm, grounding her in the present moment.

“You don’t have to make any decisions right now,” he murmured. “But when you’re ready to talk — or if you just need someone to listen — I’ll be here.”

For a moment, Piper let herself relax into the comfort he offered. She knew she was walking a fine line, balancing on the edge of something dangerous. But right now, with Noah’s hand in hers, it was easy to forget about everything else — the divorce, the custody battle, the complicated mess with Jasper.

It was easy to forget the tangled web of lies she’d woven... and even easier to forget how quickly it could all unravel.

Later that evening, after Noah left, Piper sat alone at the kitchen table, staring down at the divorce papers. The edges were worn from where she’d handled them too many times, but they were still unsigned.

Her phone buzzed on the table, pulling her from her thoughts. It was a text:

Jasper: "Can we talk tomorrow? I think we need to figure some things out — for Lily’s sake."

Piper’s heart sank. She knew exactly what that meant. The custody battle was officially beginning.

As she stared at the screen, a single, unbidden thought slipped into her mind:

What if Noah was the only person she could really trust now?

The thought was as comforting as it was terrifying. And as Piper sat there, staring at the phone and the papers that would end her marriage, she realized that no matter what happened next, her life would never be the same.
