The Lies That Binds

The Unraveling

Ch. 4 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

The silence that followed Noah's appearance was deafening. Jasper's eyes darted between Piper and the man standing in the doorway, his face a canvas of confusion, hurt, and dawning realization.

"Someone better start explaining," Mr. Hawthorne growled, his weathered hands clenched into fists at his sides.

Piper opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. How could she possibly explain the tangled web of lies and half-truths that had led to this moment?

Noah stepped forward, his green eyes — so like Lily's — fixed on Piper. "I think I can shed some light on the situation," he said softly.

Jasper's voice was barely a whisper. "Piper, what's going on? Who is this man?"

Before she could answer, the sound of small feet padding down the stairs made everyone freeze. Lily appeared, rubbing sleep from her eyes, her favorite stuffed rabbit clutched to her chest.

"Mommy?" she called, her voice thick with sleep. "I heard voices."

Time seemed to stand still as five pairs of eyes turned to the little girl. Piper watched as understanding dawned on Jasper's face, quickly followed by a pain so raw it took her breath away.

"Oh God," he choked out. "Oh God, no."

Noah took a hesitant step towards Lily, his eyes wide with wonder. "Is that…?”.

Jasper’s protective instincts kicked in immediately. He moved swiftly, placing himself between Noah and Lily. The urgency in his movements betrayed his deep-seated fear that this man, whom he barely knew, posed a threat to his family and his child. What Jasper didn’t realize was how closely Noah’s connection to Lily was intertwined with the truth he had yet to fully grasp.

Mr. Hawthorne's gruff voice cut through the tension. "Lily, darlin', why don't you go back upstairs for a bit? The grown-ups need to talk."

Lily's brow furrowed, her gaze moving from face to face. "But Grandpa, who are these men? Why does everyone look so sad?"

Piper moved to her daughter, kneeling down to meet her eyes. "Sweetie, remember how we talked about different kinds of families? How some children have two daddies, or two mommies, or—"

"Piper, don't." Jasper's voice was sharp, laced with pain. "Not like this."

She looked up at him, tears streaming down her face. "I'm sorry, Jas. I'm so, so sorry."

Noah cleared his throat. "Maybe we should take this conversation somewhere more private."

Mr. Hawthorne nodded curtly. "Lily, go on up to your room. I'll be up to check on you in a bit."

As Lily reluctantly climbed the stairs, casting curious glances over her shoulder, the adults moved into the living room. The cheerful family photos lining the walls now seemed to mock them, snapshots of a life built on lies.

Jasper sank into an armchair, his head in his hands. "How long?" he asked, his voice muffled. "How long have you known?"

Piper perched on the edge of the sofa, feeling as though she might shatter at any moment. "I've always known," she whispered.

The silence that followed was heavy, almost suffocating. Noah leaned against the fireplace, his gaze fixed on a photo of Lily from her first day of school, a snapshot of innocence that seemed to mock the turmoil in the room. Mr. Hawthorne, meanwhile, paced the room like a caged animal, his agitation palpable.

“I never meant for it to go this far,” Piper said, her voice trembling. “That night, when you and Autumn had your fight... I saw an opportunity, and I took it. I thought if I could just have you for a little while, you’d fall in love with me. But then I found out I was pregnant, and I…”

“You let me believe she was mine,” Jasper cut in, his voice a mix of accusation and heartbreak. His eyes were red-rimmed, brimming with the pain of seven years of deception. “For seven years, Piper. Seven years!”

Noah took a step forward, his face a mixture of regret and frustration. “I didn’t know either, Jasper. Not until Mr. Hawthorne called me today. I swear, if I had known…”

“Had known what?” Jasper snapped, his anger flaring. “That you had a daughter? That the woman I married had been lying to me for our entire relationship?”

Noah’s face hardened as he struggled to maintain his composure. “I didn’t know about Lily until today. I wasn’t part of that decision, Jasper. I swear, I would have wanted to be a part of her life, to be her father.”

Mr. Hawthorne stopped pacing, his gaze fixed on Piper with a cold, unforgiving stare. “And you,” he said, his voice low and dangerous. “You thought you could just erase the past, pretend everything was fine? You’ve done a lot of damage, Piper. To my family, to Jasper, and to that little girl.”

Piper’s shoulders slumped as the weight of their anger bore down on her. Her heart was a tangled mess of guilt and regret, and she could barely summon the strength to respond. “I know,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “I know. And I’m sorry.”

Jasper's face was a storm of emotions — anger, betrayal, and an aching sadness that seemed to cut through everything. “Sorry doesn’t fix this,” he said quietly, his voice cracking. “I need time to process this... to understand what just happened.”

As the room fell into another oppressive silence, Piper could only stand there, feeling the full force of the consequences of her actions crashing down around her.

Mr. Hawthorne's voice cut through the tension. "What I want to know is, what are we going to do about it now?"

All eyes turned to Piper. She took a deep breath, steeling herself for what she knew she had to do. "I think... I think it's time for the truth to come out. All of it."

As she began to speak, unraveling the tangled threads of their shared past, Piper felt a strange sense of relief washing over her. The truth, as painful as it was, was finally setting her free.

She told them everything — about her unrequited love for Jasper, about the night she'd comforted him after his fight with Autumn, about the moment she'd realized she was pregnant and made the fateful decision to keep the truth hidden.

As the story unfolded, the room seemed to shrink, the weight of secrets and lies pressing in on all of them. Jasper's face cycled through a range of emotions — anger, betrayal, grief. Noah listened with a mixture of shock and growing understanding. Mr. Hawthorne's expression remained unreadable, his eyes never leaving Piper's face.

When she finally fell silent, exhausted and emotionally drained, Jasper stood abruptly. "I need some air," he muttered, striding towards the door.

"Jas, wait —" Piper called, but the slam of the front door cut her off.

Noah ran a hand through his hair, looking lost. "I... I have a daughter," he said, as if trying out the words. "I'm a father."

Mr. Hawthorne cleared his throat. "There's a lot to sort out here. Legal matters, custody arrangements. But right now, there's a little girl upstairs who deserves to know the truth."

Piper nodded, her heart heavy. "You're right. Lily deserves to know." She turned to Noah, seeing a mixture of fear and hope in his eyes. "Would you... would you like to meet your daughter?"

As Noah nodded, his eyes bright with unshed tears, Piper realized that this was just the beginning. The truth was out, but the real challenge lay ahead — rebuilding their lives from the ashes of her lies.

With a deep breath, she stood, preparing to face the hardest conversation of her life. It was time for Lily to learn who she really was, and for all of them to figure out what family truly meant.
