The Howling Heart's Forgiveness

Chapter 33

Ch. 36 / 186 Mar 19, 2026

Staring at the plan for tomorrow afternoon when the new Alpha of Onix Moon arrives, I silently cheer when my cell phone rings and throw the file onto my desk before answering the call. Only a select few were given my number and I have a feeling the call might be Caspian.

“Brynlee here.” I answer, catching the sounds of a group of people running in the background.

“Brynlee, it’s Jett, Caspian gave me your number.” Recognizing Beta Jett’s voice, I sit up as something inside me nags that this situation is serious. Jett only talked to Asteria while Caspian talked with me during our plans to save those running from Valor’s clutches.

“What happened?” I asked, getting up from my office chair and leaving my office.

“Something bad. I couldn’t reach Asteria, can you get her on the call.” He replies, his voice filled with fear and rage. Making my way down the hall. I knock on the door and a moment later Asteria answers for me to come in.

“Jett is on the phone.” I state, turning on my speaker and placing the phone on her Desk. Gale is sitting on the sofa by the window but as soon as I rushed in, he bounds over to his Mate’s side.

“You have Asteria, Gale and I.” I call out. Jett lets out a sigh of relief before shushing the people he is with.

“We have a situation. Valor is fucking Tanya.” Shocked, I find myself lowering into the nearest seat as Asteria and I look at one another.

“What?” I ask, unsure if I heard Jett correctly.

“Valor is fucking Tanya and Rune and I found out.” Jett repeats. I run a hand along my face and close my eyes. The trial makes so much sense now. Valor was protecting his lover – not the pack – by making Rune reject me.

“I have the last twenty-five wolves that want to escape. We are making our way to safety but I can’t tell you where just yet. Rune was placed on house arrest though.” He continues explaining. The sound of a pup crying breaks my heat and I look at Asteria who is furiously typing away at her laptop.

“What about Caspian?” Worry for my best friend, I stand from my chair and pace back and forth. I would be lying if I said I didn’t care about Rune, but he chose a whore over me. Even if I worry about him, I no longer feel love for him.

“I can’t say anything for his safety but know that there is a plan. I will give you more details later.” Jett answers. I sigh with relief while standing by the window, looking outside to stare at the pack under the light of the moon.

“What about my nephew?” Asteria asks. I shudder, my heart feeling like a knife has just stabbed me but this is Asteria’s family. I know she still cares about her nephew even after what he did to me.

“Like I said, he is under house arrest. Valor is moving the wedding forward to forty-eight hours from now but I think Rune will kill himself before then.” The pain in my heart grows and I rest my head against the window. I hate him for what he did. Hate him for hurting me all because of an arranged marriage. But Rune does not deserve to die.

“Brynlee.” Jett calls my name and I hum a noise of acknowledgement, unable to trust myself to speak.

“Rune and Caspian will be safe. Trust in me please.” He pleads. I take a deep breath and turn to face my phone, finding Asteria and Gale staring at me with concern.

“I trust you. But I don’t think I can accept Rune into my pack if that is what you are going to say next.” Jett lets out a sigh and I can tell he won’t argue with me.

“That’s fine. Rune has a lot to make up to you but promise me something.”

“What is it?” I ask, getting a smile from Asteria.

“When Rune comes to find you, listen to his reason.” He answers and I frown. Why would Rune come to find me.

“Anyone who knows why Rune is being forced to marry Tanya was forced to create a blood promise not to say a word. This includes Caspian.” I look to Gale and Asteria, raising a brow to see if they knew this but they look just as shocked as I do.

“The only three people able to openly say anything are Rune, Tanya and Valor.” Some honking in the distance causes Jett to become silent and we wait with bated breaths. The situation they are in is dire.

“I need to go, but I will call you by tomorrow night. I know there is a visiting Alpha coming to Cresent Phoenix thanks to Caspian but I need your help.” Jett’s words are a whisper and I look to Asteria before she whispers on it. Her eyes glaze over and I ask Jett to stay on the line for at least two more minutes. When Asteria’s eyes regain focus, she turns her attention to the phone.

“Jett. I am sending six of my men to come get you now. We are sending the bus as well as three vans to help with transporting all of you but I have a request.” Asteria declares, her tone serious as she sends me an apologetic look. A sinking feeling rises inside me as I wait to hear the rest.

“Anything Asteria.” Jett answers.

“Save my nephew.”
