The Heiress Strikes Back

Chapter 46

Ch. 46 / 60 Jun 16, 2025

A Fragile Hope

The sterile smell of the hospital filled the air, mixing with the rush of footsteps in the hallway.

Ashley’s parents and Demitri rushed behind the stretcher that carried Ashley and Irene.

Her father’s heart was pounding in his chest, beads of sweat forming on his forehead as he tried to keep up. Demitri was right beside him, his face as pale as a ghost.

His hands shook slightly as he glanced at the unconscious forms of Ashley and Irene, both battered and bruised, but alive.

“Ashley… come on, stay with us,” Demitri muttered under his breath, barely able to speak as he gripped his mother’s trembling hand.

It had all happened so fast. Demitri had been the one to inform Ashley's parents about their daughter’s abduction, and after contacting some trusted friends, her father had tracked their location.

It hadn’t been easy, but with Irene’s phone and some quick thinking, they’d managed to pinpoint the hideout. The police had raided the building just in time, finding both women barely alive.

"She's going to be okay. She’s going to be okay," Demitri repeated over and over to himself, as if the mantra could somehow make it true.

They reached the emergency room doors. The staff quickly ushered them into a waiting area where Ashley’s parents, still in their pajamas, stood helplessly, clinging to each other for support.

“We can’t just sit here!” Ashley’s father barked, pacing back and forth. “Do they know what’s wrong with her?”

Demitri stood there, lost for words, until a doctor finally appeared, his face grim. He was met by a barrage of questions as soon as he stepped into the room.

“Is she okay?” Ashley’s mother demanded, her voice cracking with fear. “What’s happening to my daughter?”

The doctor took a deep breath, glancing at Demitri, then at Ashley’s parents. “We’ve stabilized both of them,” he began slowly, “but Ashley… she’s in a coma.”

“What?!” Ashley’s mother gasped, her voice rising in shock. “A coma? What do you mean, a coma?”

Demitri felt his heart sink as the words hit him like a freight train. He had been trying to stay strong for her—trying to believe that she would be okay—but hearing the doctor confirm his worst fear was almost too much to bear.

“I’m sorry,” the doctor continued, his face pained with empathy. “She’s unconscious, and we don’t know yet how long it will take for her to wake up, if at all.”

“Coma?” Ashley’s father repeated, his voice thick with disbelief. “How could this happen? What happened to her?”

The doctor sighed, adjusting his glasses. “She was shot. The injury caused significant internal damage. Her body is in a state of shock, and her brain… it’s responding to trauma. We’re doing everything we can, but right now, it’s all up to her.”

Demitri’s knees almost buckled. His gaze dropped to the floor, but he couldn’t seem to find the strength to hold back the tears that had been threatening to spill.

“I should’ve been there,” Demitri muttered under his breath, his voice barely audible. “I should’ve protected her.”

Ashley’s mother immediately rushed forward, grabbing the doctor by the sleeve. “What do you mean, we don’t know how long it will take? You have to fix her! You have to save her!”

“I understand your anger, Mrs. Donaldson,” the doctor said, his voice filled with sympathy. “But right now, she’s not in our hands. We can only monitor her and wait. Her body is fighting. We’ll keep her comfortable until she’s ready to wake up… if she wakes up.”

The words stung like daggers. It felt like the air had been knocked out of Demitri’s lungs. How could he let this happen to her? How could he not have done more to protect her? He had promised her he would always be there, and now she was lying in a hospital bed, unable to wake up.

“I want to see her!” Ashley’s mother demanded, her voice shaking with desperation.

The doctor nodded and led them to Ashley’s ward. Demitri followed behind, his heart heavy, as he braced himself for what he would see.

Inside the room, Ashley lay still, her face pale and fragile beneath the white sheets.

The steady beep of the heart monitor was the only sound, a reminder that she was alive—just barely. Her mother collapsed at the edge of the bed, her hands clutching the sheets as she wept. Demitri stood in the doorway, watching her, but his own tears blurred his vision.

“Why? Why did this have to happen to her?” Ashley’s mother cried, her voice broken with sorrow. “She didn’t deserve this.”

Demitri walked forward, standing beside Ashley’s bed. He gently reached out, brushing a strand of hair away from her face.

She looked so peaceful, so calm despite everything she had gone through. It broke his heart knowing that she was fighting for her life in a way no one should ever have to.

“I’m so sorry, Ashley,” he whispered, his voice filled with anguish. “I should’ve been there for you. I should’ve never let you get involved in this mess.”

Ashley’s father, still in shock, had taken a step back and was now standing near the door, his fists clenched in frustration. “This isn’t right,” he muttered, shaking his head. “Why did this happen to her? To us? We just want our daughter back.”

The doctor reappeared shortly after, standing in the doorway, his face still grim. “We’re doing everything we can, but it’s going to take time,” he said. “We’ll monitor her around the clock. Just… be patient.”

Ashley’s mother nodded, wiping her tears away. “I just want her to wake up,” she whispered, almost pleading.

Demitri turned away for a moment, fighting the overwhelming sadness that threatened to consume him.

“I’ll stay here with her,” Demitri said firmly, his voice steady despite the turmoil inside. “I’m not going anywhere.”
