Bundle of Joy
The sterile smell of the hospital filled the air as Demitri rushed through the corridors, the nurses wheeling Ashley on a stretcher.
His heart raced as his grip tightened on her hand, trying to offer the only comfort he could in the chaos of the moment.
"You can do this, baby," Demitri encouraged, his voice thick with emotion.
Ashley, pale and sweating with the strain, squeezed his hand in return, her grip surprisingly strong for someone so exhausted. "Sure?" she asked, her voice trembling with a mixture of fear and doubt.
"Absolutely sure," Demitri answered, his voice filled with all the confidence he could muster. "I’m right here with you. You’re not alone. You’ve got this."
Ashley nodded weakly, her face scrunching as another contraction hit. The nurses bustled around, preparing for the next stage of her labor, but all Demitri could focus on was Ashley.
He could see the pain in her eyes, feel the tension in her body, and he wished with all his heart that he could take it all away.
As they approached the labor room, the nurses began to wheel Ashley inside. She suddenly looked up at Demitri, her eyes wide. "Demitri, you have to come in with me. Please," she begged, her voice breaking with desperation.
The nurses exchanged glances but quickly relented. "Okay, sir, you can come in. But you’ll need to follow our instructions and stay out of the way."
Demitri nodded, brushing a stray lock of hair from Ashley's forehead before stepping into the room. His heart was in his throat as he watched the nurses help Ashley settle into the bed, her body shaking with the intensity of what was happening.
"Okay, Ashley," one of the nurses said kindly but firmly, "We’re going to need you to focus now. I need you to breathe in, hold, and push when I tell you."
Ashley nodded, her eyes flickering with pain as she glanced at Demitri. "Stay with me," she whispered.
"I’m right here, baby," Demitri assured her, his voice steady despite the whirlwind of emotions inside.
The first push came with a gasp of air, Ashley’s body trembling as she clenched her teeth. Demitri stood by her side, holding her hand firmly. "That’s it. You’re doing great," he encouraged her, his own voice raw. "Just one more. You can do this, Ashley."
Ashley took a deep breath, counting under her breath. "One, two, three…" she pushed with all her might, her face contorted in concentration.
"Good job," the nurse said, nodding as she observed Ashley’s progress. "Keep going, Ashley. One more big push and we’ll see your baby."
Ashley breathed in deeply again, her eyes wide as she locked gazes with Demitri. "I’m scared," she admitted, her voice trembling.
Demitri leaned in, brushing his lips over her forehead. "I’m right here. You’re doing amazing, Ashley. You’re stronger than you know."
With his words of encouragement echoing in her ears, Ashley took another deep breath and pushed once more, feeling the overwhelming pressure build. Her body felt like it was on fire, her breath coming in short bursts, but she refused to stop.
The nurse’s voice broke through her haze. "It’s almost time, Ashley. Just one more push."
Ashley’s body was exhausted, every muscle aching, but she summoned one last burst of energy. She clenched her teeth and pushed with everything she had.
And then—silence.
For a brief moment, it felt like the entire world held its breath, waiting for the next sound.
Then, a cry.
A loud, piercing cry filled the room, breaking the tension like a glass shattering on the floor.
Ashley’s eyes widened, and Demitri's heart leapt into his throat as the nurse quickly wrapped the baby in a blanket and handed him to Demitri.
His hands shook as he took the tiny bundle into his arms, looking down at his son, the little face still red from the birth, but the wail—the sweet, perfect wail—was the most beautiful sound Demitri had ever heard.
Ashley, exhausted and overwhelmed, collapsed back against the pillows, tears streaming down her face. "We did it," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "We really did it."
Demitri couldn’t tear his eyes away from the baby in his arms, his chest tight with emotion. He had dreamed of this moment for so long, and now it was real.
He turned to Ashley, his voice trembling. "Look at him, Ashley. He’s perfect."
Ashley managed a smile, her heart swelling with love for the tiny person they had created together. "He’s ours," she whispered, her voice barely above a breath. "I still can’t believe it."
Demitri nodded, feeling the weight of everything they had been through—everything they had survived—come together in this tiny little life. "I think we should name him now," he said, his eyes still locked on the baby.
Ashley’s smile grew wider. "What do you think?"
Demitri paused for a moment, taking it all in. Then, with a soft, proud smile, he said, "How about Alex? Alex Vasiliev.”
Ashley’s eyes filled with tears again, but this time, they were tears of happiness. "Welcome to the world, Alex Vasiliev," she whispered, her voice cracking with emotion.
At the same time, Demitri echoed her words, the two of them speaking as one. "Welcome to the world, Alex Vasiliev."
The nurses moved quickly around them, cleaning Ashley up and making sure everything was in order, but for Demitri and Ashley, the world had narrowed down to the small bundle in his arms. Their son. Their future.
And in that moment, nothing else mattered except their-tiny-little-bundle-of-joy.
Suddenly, the tranquility was shattered by a sudden commotion outside. Demitri's protective instincts flared, and he turned toward the door just as it burst open.
Standing there, with cold fury etched into his face, was Moreno Drey—Ethan’s father. Before anyone could react, he stepped forward, a gun in one hand.
"You thought you could destroy my family and walk away unscathed?" Moreno hissed, his voice venomous. "Now, you’ll know what it feels like to lose everything."
Ashley let out a strangled cry, reaching for her baby, but Demitri quickly stepped between them. "Moreno, no." Demitri growled, his voice steady despite the chaos erupting around them. "This isn’t the way."
Moreno smirked darkly. "It’s the only way," he said, picking out Alex before backing toward the door with him. "Consider this the beginning of your nightmare."
And with that, he disappeared, leaving Demitri and Ashley frozen in horror as their world crumbled around them.
