The Heiress Strikes Back

Chapter 42

Ch. 42 / 60 Jun 16, 2025

Confessions in the Shadows

Demitri paced around the penthouse, double-checking every security measure before stepping out.

The tension in the air was palpable as Ashley sat on the couch, her hands fidgeting nervously. Irene stood by the window, her sharp eyes scanning the city below like a hawk.

“Everything’s in place,” Demitri said, breaking the silence. “Two officers will be stationed outside. They’re trustworthy. James handpicked them.”

Irene nodded, her arms crossed. “Good. We can’t take any chances with Ethan lurking around.”

Ashley glanced up at Demitri, her lips parting as if to speak, but she hesitated. He noticed and paused, turning to face her fully.

“Ashley,” he said gently, his voice breaking through her turmoil. “You’re safe here. I promise.”

She stood, taking a hesitant step toward him. “Demitri…”

He closed the distance between them, his hands resting lightly on her shoulders. “I need to take care of this, Ashley. If Ethan doesn’t want the partnership anymore, then we’ll dissolve it. Legally. No more threats, no more games.”

“But what if he tries to hurt you?” Her voice trembled, her fear evident in her wide eyes.

Demitri’s expression softened. “I’m not afraid of Ethan. He’s a coward who hides behind his father’s shadow. Trust me, Ashley. I’ll handle this.”

Her eyes searched his face, looking for reassurance. “I just… I don’t want anything to happen to you.”

Demitri smiled, his thumb brushing against her cheek. “Nothing will happen to me. I’ll be back before you know it.”

He leaned down and kissed her forehead, lingering for a moment before pulling away. Then, almost as an afterthought, he bent slightly and placed a tender kiss on her belly.

“We’ll talk more when I get back, okay?” he said softly, his voice filled with unspoken promises.

Ashley nodded, unable to find her voice.

As he walked toward the door, ready to leave, she suddenly called out, her voice louder than she intended. “Demitri!”

He stopped in his tracks, turning back slowly to face her. “What is it?”

Her hands clenched at her sides, and she took a shaky breath. “I love you.”

For a moment, time seemed to freeze. Demitri’s eyes widened in surprise, the words hanging in the air between them.

Then, as if pulled by an invisible force, he closed the distance between them in three quick strides.

His hands cupped her face as he tilted her head up, and without a word, he kissed her. It wasn’t like their previous kisses—this one was urgent, raw, and filled with every ounce of emotion he had been holding back.

When he finally pulled away, his forehead rested against hers, their breaths mingling. “Say it again,” he whispered, his voice hoarse.

Her eyes locked onto his, her fear momentarily replaced by a shy smile. “I love you, Demitri.”

He kissed her again, softer this time, as if savoring the moment. When he pulled back, he let his hand linger on her cheek. “I love you too, Ashley. And I’ll prove it to you every day.”

She nodded, her fear momentarily replaced by a flicker of hope.

“I’ll be back,” he said firmly, stepping away. “Wait for me.”

And with that, he was gone.
