The Heiress Strikes Back

Chapter 45

Ch. 45 / 60 Jun 16, 2025

The Bitter Price of Ego

A groan left Ashley’s lips as she slowly regained consciousness. Her head throbbed, and the world around her seemed to spin.

Her eyes fluttered open, adjusting to the dim surroundings of the dark room. The flickering light from a lone bulb hanging above them barely illuminated the space. She blinked, trying to focus, but the first thing she saw made her heart sink.

Irene. Demitri’s mother. Slumped beside her, her arm still bleeding from the wound she had taken earlier. Panic surged through Ashley, and she quickly moved towards her.

“Irene?” she whispered, shaking the older woman’s frail body. “Irene, please… wake up.”

After a moment, Irene’s eyes flickered open, though they seemed clouded with confusion. She blinked a few times before focusing on Ashley, her face softening with recognition.

“Did… did you tell them where Demitri is?” Irene asked, her voice weak and strained.

Ashley shook her head frantically, tears already welling in her eyes. “No. I didn’t tell them anything,” she replied, her voice trembling with guilt. “I’m so sorry for putting you in this mess. This is all my fault.”

Irene reached up, her hand trembling as she touched Ashley’s face gently, wiping away the tears that were beginning to slide down her cheeks.

“No, no, Ashley,” Irene murmured, her voice soft and full of warmth. “I’m happy you’re here with us… I’m happy you’re with Demitri now.”

Ashley swallowed hard, her heart breaking. “I… I don’t know what to do anymore. I’m scared, Irene.”

The older woman gave a small, fragile smile despite the pain etched across her face. “Forgive him… for my sake, please. If I die… just promise me that you’ll forgive him.”

Ashley’s breath hitched, her heart aching at Irene’s words. “Nothing is going to happen to you, Irene,” she said quickly, trying to reassure the woman, but her voice cracked with emotion. “You’re going to be okay, I swear.”

Before Irene could respond, they both heard a throat clearing in the corner of the room.

Ashley froze, her blood turning cold. She turned toward the sound, her eyes widening in shock as the dim light flickered once more, revealing the figure of Ethan. He was sitting calmly in the far corner of the room, a smirk spread across his face.

“Well, well, well,” Ethan said, his voice dripping with amusement. “Look who’s awake. Don’t you worry, sweetheart, no one will save you or her. You’ll both die later, but first…” He paused, savoring the moment. “First, I get to treat you like the piece of shit you really are.”

Ashley’s stomach twisted with dread. She scooted backward, instinctively pulling herself away from him as much as the cramped space would allow.

“What do you want, Ethan?” she demanded, trying to steady her breath. “If this is about the partnership, Demitri will do that. He will give you whatever you want. Just let us go.”

Ethan let out a laugh that sounded almost manic, echoing in the small, cold room.

“Partnership?” He shook his head, grinning wider. “You really think I’m doing this for some damn business deal? No, no, no, beautiful girl.” His voice dropped into a dark, mocking tone. “I’m doing this because you bruised my ego. You humiliated me. Remember that?”

Ashley’s face flushed with anger as his words sunk in. She was about to retort, but Ethan didn’t give her a chance.

“We almost got married, remember?” he continued, his eyes narrowing with a twisted glint. “You should’ve been mine. You were never supposed to leave me. But now… now, I’m gonna make you regret it.”

Ashley opened her mouth to speak, but before she could, Ethan surged forward with terrifying speed. He grabbed her by the arm, his fingers digging into her skin as he slapped her across the face hard enough to send her reeling.

The sting burned, but Ashley refused to break down. “You’re pathetic, Ethan,” she spat, her voice full of defiance. “You’re just a coward who can’t handle rejection.”

Ethan’s eyes flashed with fury, and without warning, he slapped her again—harder this time.

Ashley’s head snapped to the side, and the room spun around her. She could feel blood trickling down her lip from where his slap had split the skin.

“You think you’re clever?” Ethan sneered, pulling her hair to yank her back upright. “You humiliated me, and now you’re going to pay. You and Demitri both.”

Ashley staggered back, her vision blurry from the force of the blows. She tried to steady herself, but the pain was overwhelming.

She wanted to fight back, but she knew it wouldn’t do any good. Ethan was much stronger, and he was fueled by a deep, twisted rage.

Irene, who had been struggling to get up, was now pleading with Ethan, her voice weak. “Stop… please, stop, Ethan! You’ve done enough! Don’t hurt her anymore…”

But Ethan only laughed at her plea. “Shut up, old woman,” he growled, his eyes filled with malice. “You think your words are going to change anything? You think I care about your pity?”

Just as Ashley was about to speak again, the sound of gunfire erupted from somewhere outside the room.

Rapid shots rang through the air, and Ethan’s grip on Ashley tightened as he dragged her in front of him, using her as a human shield.

Ashley’s breath caught in her throat as more gunshots echoed in the distance, getting closer and closer.

“Move, bitch,” Ethan growled, pushing Ashley forward towards the entrance. “I’m not done yet.”

Ashley felt the searing pain before she even realized what had happened. A sharp, brutal agony shot through her stomach, and she gasped, her hands clutching at the wound. Blood seeped through her fingers as she crumpled to the floor, her vision fading to black.

A scream tore from her throat. “My baby!”
