POV: Ravenna
I woke feeling fundamentally different.
Not just alive. Not just recovered. Different in a way that went bone-deep. Soul-deep.
Stronger. More complete. Like pieces of myself that had been missing my entire life had suddenly clicked into place.
The room was dim. Early morning light filtered through curtains. I was in my chambers. In my bed. Bandages wrapped my arm but there was no pain. No fever. No infection spreading toward my heart.
I was alive.
That alone should have been impossible. I'd felt myself dying. Felt Solace stop breathing. Felt everything slip away into darkness.
But somehow I was here. Breathing. Whole.
And fundamentally CHANGED.
I could feel power humming under my skin. Not just fire element like I'd always carried. Something else. Something cool and fluid and ancient. Water. My mother's element. The gift she'd died trying to pass to me.
I could sense it everywhere. In the air around me—moisture, humidity, the faint mist that clung to morning. In the stone walls—water trapped in mortar, in cracks, in the very fabric of the castle. In my own body—blood flowing through veins, tears waiting behind my eyes, the subtle hydration of living tissue.
It was overwhelming. Beautiful. Terrifying.
Movement caught my eye. Theron sat in a chair beside my bed, slumped forward, his hand holding mine even in sleep. His face was exhausted. Dark circles under his eyes. His hair unkempt. His clothes rumpled like he'd been wearing them for days.
He'd stayed. Through everything. Just like he promised.
I squeezed his hand gently.
He woke immediately. Like he'd been waiting for that touch. His amber eyes snapped open and found mine and the relief that crashed across his face was overwhelming.
"Ravenna." My name was a prayer. A gasp. A sound of pure relief. "You're awake. You're—" His voice broke. "Gods, you're awake."
"Hey," I said. My voice was rough from disuse but steady. "I'm here."
He stood so fast the chair tipped over behind him. Didn't even notice. Just leaned over me, his hands framing my face like he needed to touch me to believe I was real.
"How do you feel?" he asked. His thumb traced my cheekbone. Gentle. Reverent. "Does anything hurt? Should I get Lysander?"
"I feel..." I searched for the right word. "Strange. Powerful. Like I could heal or destroy with equal ease."
His brow furrowed. "What do you mean?"
"I can sense water." I turned my head to look at the pitcher on my bedside table. "In that jug. In the air. In you—your blood, your breath, every drop of moisture in your body. I can FEEL it."
Understanding dawned in his eyes. "Your mother's element."
"Yes." I sat up slowly. He helped me, supporting my back. "The scale. It didn't just save me. It changed me. Gave me what she couldn't give when I was born."
"You're a dual element dragon now." Wonder colored his voice. "Fire and water. That's—that's incredibly rare."
"I know." I looked at my hands. They looked the same. But I could feel the power thrumming under my skin. Waiting. Ready. "I feel like a completely different person."
"You're not." His hand found mine again. Held tight. "You're still you. Just... more."
The door opened. Lysander entered carrying his healer's bag, Morgana right behind him. Both stopped dead when they saw me sitting up, awake, lucid.
"Princess." Lysander's voice was thick with emotion. "You're conscious. How—how do you feel?"
"Different," I said. "Stronger. I can sense water everywhere."
"The element awakened fully." He crossed to the bed and started examining me with practiced efficiency. Checking my eyes, my pulse, the wound on my arm. "May I see?"
I let him unwrap the bandages. Underneath, my skin was perfect. Smooth. No scar. No sign that Lucien's claws had torn Solace's wing and nearly killed us both.
Lysander stared. "Impossible. Dragon wing injuries always scar. Always."
"Not when healed by a mother's gift," I said quietly. "Not when the healing comes from love that transcends death."
He looked at me sharply. "You understand what's happened to you?"
"I think so." I flexed my arm. Full range of motion. No pain. "Queen Elara's scale didn't just contain her element. It contained her gift. Water's rare gift. Healing."
"Yes." Lysander sat on the edge of the bed. "I've seen healing gifts before. Powerful ones. But nothing like what I witnessed. The scale dissolved completely. Merged with your blood. With your dragon. With everything you are. You didn't just inherit the gift, Princess. You inherited your mother's full power."
Morgana made a sound. Half sob, half laugh. "You're going to be insufferable now, aren't you? Princess with two elements and a rare gift?"
Despite everything, I laughed. "Probably."
"Can you—" Theron hesitated. "Can you use it? The healing gift?"
"I don't know." I looked at my hands again. "I can feel it. Like fire but cooler. Gentler. But I haven't tried."
"Don't," Lysander said firmly. "Not yet. Healing gifts take practice to control. Water magic is powerful and dangerous if misused. You could heal someone's broken bone and accidentally dissolve their blood vessels. Could cure poison and stop their heart instead. The gift requires precision, training, control."
"How long until I can use it safely?"
"Weeks. Maybe months. It depends on your natural aptitude and how much you practice." He finished his examination and stood. "But you're recovered fully. No sign of infection. No residual damage from the fever or blood loss. You're healthy, Princess. Miraculously, impossibly healthy."
"What about Solace?" I asked. "Is she—"
"See for yourself." Lysander offered me his hand. "Can you stand?"
I swung my legs out of bed carefully. Stood. My legs were steady. Strong. No weakness from days of fever and blood loss.
Theron was beside me immediately, ready to catch me if I fell.
"I'm okay," I told him. "I promise. I feel better than okay."
We walked slowly out of my chambers. Through hallways I knew by heart. Out into morning air that smelled like ash and fire and home.
The dragon stables were quiet this early. Most dragons still sleeping. But I could sense her immediately. Feel her through the bond that connected us.
Solace.
She was awake. Standing. Moving.
We rounded the corner and I stopped breathing.
She was magnificent.
No longer small. No longer the smallest dragon in the kingdom. She'd grown—not massive like Havoc, but substantial. Real. Powerful.
Her silver-white scales had a luminous quality now. They caught the morning light and threw it back multiplied, like she was made of starlight and snow. Red veins ran through the white—fire beneath ice, my father's element visible under my mother's gift.
Her wings were perfect. Whole. The shredded membrane had healed completely, strengthened by my mother's power. She stretched them experimentally and they moved with fluid grace.
Golden stripes marked her chest. Royal blood visible even on a hybrid.
She turned her head when she sensed me. Our eyes met. Blue on blue.
And I felt her joy. Her relief. Her wholeness.
"She's beautiful," Theron whispered beside me.
"She's perfect." Tears ran down my face. Happy tears. Grateful tears. "She's everything she was supposed to be."
I shifted without conscious thought. Let Ravenna dissolve. Let Solace come forward.
The transformation was different now. Smoother. Stronger. No pain. Just power flowing through me like water and fire combined.
I materialized and immediately felt the difference.
I was larger. Not huge but no longer tiny. No longer something to be pitied or dismissed.
My wings were perfect. Strong. I stretched them and they responded with power I'd never felt before.
The fire in my chest burned hotter. The new water element flowed cool through my veins. Two elements. Two halves of my heritage finally balanced.
I was no longer the smallest dragon in Cindravale.
I was magnificent.
Havoc appeared beside me. Theron shifting to join us. The massive red-black dragon looked at me and I saw wonder in his amber eyes.
His mate. Small and weak. Now transformed into something powerful and rare.
I pressed my forehead to his. Felt his relief through the bond. His joy. His love.
We'd survived. Both of us. Against impossible odds.
And I was finally whole.
