POV: Ravenna
I'm dying.
I can feel it. Solace is bleeding out and I'm bleeding out with her and there's nothing—nothing—I can do to stop it.
The pain is everywhere. White-hot and ice-cold at the same time. Solace's shredded wing sends agony through my arm. The gashes in her side feel like my ribs are breaking. The blood loss makes everything spin and tilt and wrong.
Everything is red and white and pain. The dragon stable spins around me. Lysander's voice sounds far away, urgent and desperate. Havoc is curled around us—around Solace—trying to keep her warm but it's not enough.
We're dying.
My dragon is dying. I'm dying.
And all I can think is that I never told Theron I love him.
"Ravenna!" That's Father's voice. Loud. Panicked. I've never heard him sound like that. "Ravenna, hold on—"
But I can't hold on. There's nothing left to hold onto. Solace's breathing is wrong—shallow, ragged, fading. Her wing is shredded. The blood won't stop. Lysander's healing isn't working because the wound is too deep, too dragon, too MUCH.
I feel her slipping away from me.
My dragon. My other half. The part of me that's been there since I was born.
She's leaving.
And I'm going with her.
"No." Father's voice again. Different now. Hard. Determined. "No, I will not lose her."
Footsteps running. Fast. Away from us.
I try to focus. Try to stay conscious. But everything is fading. Gray creeping in at the edges. Cold spreading through Solace's body. Through MY body.
We're the same. Dragon and human. One soul split between two forms.
When she dies, I die.
It's that simple.
Time does something weird. Stretches. Contracts. I don't know how long Father is gone. Could be seconds. Could be hours. Could be years. Time doesn't mean anything when you're dying.
I focus on breathing. On Solace's labored breathing. On the bond connecting me to Theron—still there, still thrumming faintly, but getting weaker. Fainter. Like a candle guttering in wind.
I want to reach for it. Want to send him something. Anything. A goodbye. An apology. An I love you that I never got to say out loud.
But I can't. Don't have the strength. Can barely hold onto consciousness.
Then he's back. Running. I hear him before I see him.
"Move," he commands. Voice like a king. Like someone who will not be argued with. "Everyone move."
Lysander says something. Protests maybe.
"I said move."
Footsteps shuffling back. Giving Father space.
I feel him kneel beside Solace. Beside me. His hands—when did Father's hands get so old?—touch my dragon's scales. Gentle. Reverent.
"I should have done this years ago," he whispers. Not to me. To someone else. Someone not here. "I should have given this to her when she was old enough to understand. But I was selfish. I wanted to keep this piece of you." His voice breaks. "I'm sorry, Elara. I'm so sorry."
Elara.
Mother.
Something cold touches Solace's chest. Right over her heart. Cold but warming. Smooth. Hard. Crystalline.
"Your Majesty." That's Lysander. Shocked. "Is that—do you understand what you're doing?"
"I understand perfectly," Father says. His voice is steady now. Resolved.
"That scale holds your wife's life force. Her healing gift. Everything she poured into it before—" Lysander's voice drops. "If you use it now, Elara's final gift will be gone forever."
"I know."
"Aldric—"
"I will not lose my daughter the way I lost my wife." Father's voice is absolute. "Elara created this scale for Ravenna. For her. For this moment. I've kept it locked away for twenty-one years like a coward, unable to let go, unable to honor what Elara wanted." A pause. "It's time to stop being a coward."
"But—"
"She made this FOR Ravenna, Lysander. She died giving this gift to our daughter. And I'm FINALLY going to let her use it."
Silence. Heavy. Loaded.
Then Lysander says quietly, "Then may the gods honor your wife's sacrifice."
The cold thing presses firmer against Solace's chest. Against her heart. Against MY heart.
"Ravenna," Father says softly. "If you can hear me—this is from your mother. She loved you more than life itself. More than kingdoms. More than anything." His voice roughens. "She would have given everything to save you. And she DID give everything. This is her gift. Her final gift. I should have given it to you years ago."
I want to answer. Want to tell him it's okay. That I understand.
But I can't speak. Can barely think.
Solace's breathing rattles. Wet. Wrong.
We're out of time.
"Please work," Father whispers. "Please. I'm begging you, Elara. Save our daughter. She's all I have left of you. All I have left of us. Don't take her from me. Not like this. Not when I finally told her—" His voice breaks completely. "Please."
For a long moment, nothing happens.
The cold thing stays cold. Unresponsive. Just a crystallized scale pressed against dying dragon scales.
The blood keeps flowing. Pooling beneath Solace. Too much blood. Too much loss.
Solace keeps dying. Breathing getting shallower. Heartbeat getting fainter.
We keep dying.
I can feel the edge now. That final darkness. The place where consciousness stops and there's nothing beyond. I'm so close. So very close.
This is it. This is—
Then—
Warmth.
Faint at first. So faint I think I'm imagining it. Like the first touch of sun after winter. Like the memory of summer on the coldest day. Spreading slowly from the crystalline thing against Solace's heart.
Is this death? Is this what dying feels like? Warmth instead of cold?
But no. It's growing.
Building.
Getting hotter.
Not dying. Not fading. Waking.
Something inside the scale—something that's been dormant for twenty-one years—suddenly IGNITES.
"It's working," Lysander breathes. "By all the gods, it's working."
The warmth becomes heat. The heat becomes fire. But not my fire—this is different. Cooler. Flowing. Like water made of light. Like rivers made of starlight. Like oceans compressed into a single point of brilliant radiance.
Water.
Mother's element. Her gift. Her life poured into this crystallized scale twenty-one years ago when she was dying and I was being born.
She saved me then by giving me this scale. Now she's saving me again by letting it finally be USED.
The scale pressed against Solace's chest begins to glow. Blue-white radiance spreading outward like dawn breaking.
"Everyone back!" Lysander shouts. "Get back!"
But I barely hear him.
Because the light is INSIDE me now. Inside Solace. Inside US.
And it's not just healing.
It's AWAKENING.
Something that's been sleeping for twenty-one years—buried deep in my blood, dormant and silent—suddenly ROARS to life.
Water.
I carry water.
Mother's element. Hidden inside me all this time beneath the fire.
And now it's WAKING UP.
"Oh gods," Lysander says. His voice is distant. Awed. Terrified. "The hybrid element. It's activating. After all these years, it's—"
The light intensifies.
Solace's wounds start to close.
And I feel my mother's presence in the magic. Feel her. Not a memory. Not a ghost. Just... her love. Her sacrifice. Her absolute unwavering certainty that I was worth dying for.
"Live," I hear her voice say. Not out loud. Inside. In the magic. In the gift. "Live, my darling girl. Live for both of us."
The light becomes BLINDING.
And the last thing I feel before everything goes WHITE is my father's hand gripping my dragon's shoulder and his voice saying over and over like a prayer:
"Thank you, Elara. Thank you. Thank you."
Then the world EXPLODES with blue-white radiance.
And everything changes.
