The Dragon Princess and the Warrior

Chapter 55

Ch. 55 / 150 Apr 06, 2026

POV: Ravenna

Day one.

She doesn't wake.

Lysander checks her vitals. Says everything is stable. Normal. Her body is processing the transformation. Give it time.

I sit beside Solace's head and watch her breathe. In. Out. Steady. Alive.

But distant. Unreachable.

Hadrian brings food. I don't eat it. He doesn't argue. Just leaves it within reach and sits with me for an hour in silence.

When he leaves, I'm alone again.

I talk to her. Don't know if she can hear. Don't care.

"The court is in chaos," I tell her. Tell Solace because Ravenna is sleeping somewhere deep inside. "House Ashford is pushing for immediate hearings. Your father is holding them off. Nobles are arguing about whether your transformation is blessing or curse." A pause. "I don't care about any of it. I just need you to wake up."

No response. Just breathing.

Day two.

She doesn't wake.

I don't leave. Hadrian tries to make me. Says I need to bathe, eat, sleep somewhere that isn't a stone floor.

I tell him no.

We stare at each other. He knows that look. Knows I won't move.

He leaves. Returns with fresh clothes and forces me to change. Brings warm food and watches until I eat at least some of it.

"You're no good to her dead," he says bluntly.

"I'm no good to her at all," I say. "But I'm staying."

He nods. Understands.

Morgana visits. Brings news I don't want. Court gossip. Political maneuvering. Cassian's accusations.

"They're saying she's dangerous," Morgana says quietly. "That hybrids with two elements are too powerful. Too unstable." Her jaw tightens. "They're using her unconscious state to attack her. And you."

"Let them," I say.

"Theron—"

"She'll wake up. She'll defend herself. She's better at words than I've ever been." I look at Solace's sleeping face. "Until then, I'm here."

Morgana leaves.

I talk to Ravenna again.

"I've been thinking about the rejections," I say. Voice low. Like confession. "The five women who said no. Who tore pieces out of my soul." I lean against Solace's neck. Feel her warmth. Her life. "I thought I was broken. Thought something in me was fundamentally wrong. Unlovable. Cursed."

Breathing. In. Out. Steady.

"But maybe," I continue, "maybe they had to reject me. So I would be available when you showed up. When Havoc recognized Solace. When everything changed." A pause. "Maybe surviving all that wasn't curse. Maybe it was preparation. For you. For us."

No response.

I close my eyes. "Or maybe I'm just talking to make sense of pain that never made sense. Either way—I'm here. However long it takes."

Day three.

She still doesn't wake.

I'm starting to feel it now. The exhaustion. The fear. The bone-deep terror that maybe she won't wake. Maybe the transformation was too much. Maybe—

No. I can't think like that.

Lysander checks her. Says she's stable. Still processing. Could wake any time now. Her body is close to ready.

"How do you know?" I ask.

"The bond," he says. Points to my chest. "It's getting stronger. Clearer. That means she's surfacing. Coming back."

I focus on the bond. He's right. It's not as muted as it was. The door is opening. Slowly.

She's coming back.

I just have to wait.

More visitors. Saren brings reports about House Ashford's movements. Security concerns. Political pressures.

I don't care.

Aldric comes. Sits with his daughter. Tells her about the kingdom. About how proud he is. About how much her mother would have loved seeing this transformation.

"Wake up soon," he says quietly before leaving. "We need you, Ravenna."

I need you, I think. But don't say it out loud.

Evening comes. Third night. The lamps are lit. The stable is warm despite the cold night air.

I'm so tired. Haven't slept properly in three days. Just dozed here and there. Never fully resting.

But I can't leave. Won't leave.

I settle against Solace's neck. Pull the blanket tighter.

"I'm falling in love with you," I tell her. Say it out loud for the first time. "Maybe I already have fallen. I don't know. I've never—" My voice roughens. "I've never felt this before. This need to protect you. To be near you. To survive FOR you instead of just surviving because I'm too stubborn to die."

The bond pulses. Warm. Close.

"I need you to wake up," I continue. "So I can tell you properly. So I can see your face when I say it. So you can make some sharp comment about how dramatic I'm being." A smile despite the fear. "So we can face whatever comes next together."

Silence. Just breathing. Just warmth.

"I don't care about the hearing," I say. "Don't care about House Ashford or politics or whether I'm charged with murder. I'll face it all if you're beside me." I close my eyes. "Just come back. Please."

Sleep pulls at me. I fight it. Want to stay awake. Want to be alert when she wakes.

But exhaustion wins.

I drift off still leaning against Solace's neck. Still holding vigil. Still waiting.

***

I dream.

In the dream, she's awake. Human form. Those bright blue eyes looking at me with that sharp intelligence and impossible stubbornness.

She's smiling.

"You talk too much when I'm asleep," she says.

"I talk too much all the time," I respond.

"Liar. You barely talk at all." Her smile softens. "But I heard you. Every word. Every confession. Every desperate plea for me to wake up."

"And?"

"And I love you too." She reaches for me. "Now wake up. I'm tired of being unconscious."

I try to hold onto the dream. Try to stay in this moment.

But consciousness pulls me up. Slowly. Gently.

I wake with a start.

Dawn light filters through the stable. Pale grey turning gold. The third dawn since she fell asleep.

How long was I out? An hour? More?

I blink. Disoriented. Exhausted.

Then I look at Solace.

And my heart STOPS.

She's looking at me.

Not sleeping. Not unconscious. LOOKING.

Those bright blue dragon eyes—Ravenna's eyes—focused directly on me. Aware. Awake. ALIVE.

"Ravenna?" My voice cracks. Barely a whisper.

The bond surges. Warm and bright and absolutely PRESENT. Not muted. Not distant. Right there.

Awake. Mine. here.

Solace's eyes blink slowly. Then she shifts.

The transformation flows through her—different now, more fluid, faster. Fire and water merging seamlessly.

And suddenly Ravenna is there. Human form. Sitting where Solace was. Wearing the clothes someone must have left for her. Hair wild. Face pale.

But AWAKE.

She looks at me. Really looks at me. And a slow smile spreads across her face.

"Hi," she says. Voice rough from three days of not speaking.

Something in my chest breaks. Relief so intense it's painful.

"You're awake," I say. Stupidly. Obviously.

"I'm awake." Her smile widens. "And I heard you. Every word. Every confession." She reaches for my hand. "Every 'I'm falling in love with you.'"

Oh gods.

"I—" I don't know what to say. "You weren't supposed to hear that."

"Too bad." She squeezes my hand. "Because I need to tell you something."

"What?"

Her eyes meet mine. Bright. Clear. Absolutely certain.

"I love you," she says. "Not because of the bond. Not because you saved me. Not because you're convenient or because my dragon chose yours." She leans closer. "I love you because you're KIND and honorable and impossibly strong. Because you survived five rejections and kept going. Because you sat beside me for three days refusing to leave. Because you're mine and I'm yours and I'm done being afraid of that."

I can't breathe. Can't speak. Can't do anything but stare at her.

"Say something," she says. But she's smiling.

"I love you too," I manage. "I already told you that. While you were asleep."

"Tell me again while I'm awake."

"I love you." The words feel right. True. "I love you, Ravenna."

She kisses me.

Right there in the dragon stable at dawn. After three days of unconsciousness and transformation and terror.

She kisses me and it feels like COMING HOME.

When we finally pull apart, she's crying. Happy tears.

"We have so much to deal with," she says. "House Ashford. The hearing. The court chaos. My new powers that I don't know how to control."

"We'll face it," I say. "Together."

"Together," she agrees.

And for the first time since Lucien died, since she almost died, since everything went to hell—

I have hope.

Real hope.

Because she's awake. She's alive. She loves me.

And whatever comes next—

We'll survive it.
