POV: Ravenna
The scale EXPLODES.
Not literally—there's no fire, no shrapnel, no destruction. No violence in the physical sense.
But the light. Oh gods, the light.
Blue-white radiance erupts from the crystallized scale like someone cracked open the sun and poured it directly into Solace's chest. Like dawn and dusk and noon all happening simultaneously. Like every star in the sky condensed into one impossible moment of BRILLIANCE.
It FLOODS through us—through dragon, through human, through the soul that binds them, through the bond that connects both halves of me to both halves of Theron.
Pure. Concentrated. HEALING.
But it's not JUST healing.
It's more. So much more. It's transformation. Awakening. Completion. Everything I should have been from birth but couldn't be because I was too small, too young, too focused on just surviving.
It's twenty-one years of dormant potential suddenly roaring to life all at once.
It's Mother reaching across death itself to give me what she couldn't give me in life—the missing half of myself.
"Cover your eyes!" Someone—Lysander maybe—shouts. "Everyone COVER YOUR EYES!"
But I can't look away. Can't close my eyes even though the light is blinding even though I'm experiencing this from INSIDE Solace and the brightness is everywhere.
Because I feel it happening.
Feel the magic SLAM into me like a tidal wave made of starlight and love and twenty-one years of waiting.
Mother.
I feel her in this. Her presence. Her love. Her absolute certainty that I was worth dying for. Worth saving. Worth this.
The healing magic doesn't just touch Solace's wounds—it REmakeS them.
The torn wing membrane doesn't just close. It REGENERATES. New tissue spreading across the shredded gaps, knitting together with something that wasn't there before. The new membrane shimmers faintly BLUE beneath the white scales. Like water frozen beneath snow. Like ice with light trapped inside.
The gashes in Solace's side seal over. The bleeding stops. The pain—oh gods, the PAIN that's been there for days—suddenly VANISHES.
But we're not healed.
We're CHANGING.
"What's happening?" Father's voice. Distant. Awed. Terrified. "Lysander, what's happenings to her?"
"The water element," Lysander says. His voice shakes. "It's been dormant since birth. Hidden. Sleeping. But the healing magic from Elara's scale is waking it up. Forcing it to ACTIVATE." A pause. "Fire and water are colliding inside her."
Fire and water.
Mother's element and Father's element. Two forces that should destroy each other. Two magics that should never coexist in one body, one soul, one DRAGON.
Both inside me. Both part of me. Both WAKING UP at the same time.
The collision feels like being torn apart and rebuilt simultaneously. Like dying and being born in the same breath. Fire roars through my veins—hot, wild, familiar, mine since birth. Water surges to meet it—cool, flowing, NEW, and yet somehow ancient and known. They should destroy each other. Should cancel out. Should RIP me to pieces.
Instead they MERGE.
Twisting together like threads in a tapestry. Complementing. Balancing. Creating something that's neither fire nor water but both.
Solace's body starts changing.
Growing.
Her bones lengthen. Her wings expand. Her scales ripple and shift as her size INCREASES—not dramatically, not absurdly, but notICEABLY. She's been the smallest dragon in the kingdom her whole life. Compact. Delicate. Easy to overlook.
Not anymore.
The white scales stay white but now they have RED VEINS running through them. Like embers trapped under snow. Like fire burning beneath ice. The gold royal stripes glow brighter than they ever have—luminous in the blue-white light.
"By all the gods," someone whispers. Hadrian maybe. "She's beautiful."
Beautiful.
I've never felt beautiful. Never felt powerful. Never felt like anything but a mistake—a hybrid, a disappointment, a princess with the smallest dragon and the sharpest tongue.
But now—
Now I feel WHOLE.
The water element settles inside me next to the fire. Not fighting it. Not replacing it. JOINING it. Two elements. One dragon. One soul.
Rare. Almost impossible. The kind of thing that happens once in a generation if that.
And it's mine.
Mother's gift isn't just healing. It's COMPLETION.
She gave me the missing piece. The part of her I should have had from birth but couldn't access because I was too young, too fire-dominant, too focused on survival.
Now I'm both.
Fire princess with water in her blood. Hybrid with two elements instead of one.
The light intensifies until even through closed dragon eyes it's BLINDING. I feel people backing away. Hear them shouting. Sense Havoc—Theron—trying to shield the humans from the radiance even though he's just as awed and terrified as they are.
And in the center of it all, I hear Mother's voice one more time.
"You are more than I ever was," she whispers. Not out loud. In the magic. In the gift. In the love she poured into this crystallized scale twenty-one years ago. "Fire and water. Strength and healing. Warrior and savior." A pause. "Use this gift wisely, my darling. Protect those who cannot protect themselves. Heal those who are broken." Her voice softens. "And love that warrior without fear. He is worthy of you. You are worthy of him. Together you will be UNSTOPPABLE."
Then she fades.
But her love doesn't fade. It STAYS. Woven into the magic. Woven into ME.
The light reaches a peak—so bright it feels like the stable might CATCH fire from pure radiance alone.
Then it starts to dim.
Slowly. Gradually. Like dawn retreating before night.
The magic settles. The transformation completes. The awakening finishes.
I open Solace's eyes.
The first thing I see is Havoc's massive scarred face inches from mine. Those amber eyes wide with wonder and relief and something that looks like love.
Safe. Ours. ALIVE.
The thought isn't mine. Isn't his. It's the BOND speaking. The connection between our dragons humming with joy and relief.
I try to move. Try to stand. Try to—
Solace's legs buckle.
We collapse.
Not from pain. Not from injury. Just from EXHAUSTION. From transformation. From my body trying to process what just happened—the healing, the awakening, the fundamental CHANGE on every level.
I hear Father cry out. Feel hands—human hands—touching my scales.
"Is she—" Father's voice breaks. "Lysander, is she—"
"She's stable," Lysander says quickly. Firmly. "Her vitals are strong. Her wounds are healed. But her body just went through a massive transformation. The water element awakening is forcing adaptation on a cellular level. She needs TIME."
"Will she wake?"
"When her body is ready. Could be hours. Could be days." Lysander's voice softens. "But she's alive, Aldric. Your daughter is alive."
A sound escapes Father. Half sob, half laugh. Pure relief.
"Thank you, Elara," he whispers. "Thank you."
I want to tell him I'm okay. Want to shift back to human form and HUG him and tell him I'm alive and I'm FINE.
But Solace won't move. Won't respond. Just lies there breathing steadily while consciousness FADES.
The last thing I sense before everything goes dark is someone—Theron—shifting back to human form and dropping to his knees beside my dragon's head.
His hand touches my scales. Gentle. Reverent. Desperate.
"Don't leave me," he whispers. "Please, Ravenna. Don't leave me now."
I want to answer.
Can't.
Darkness pulls me under.
Not death. Not injury. Just SLEEP. Deep transformation sleep while my body rewrites itself on every level.
And somewhere far away, I hear a sound like crystal shattering.
The scale.
Mother's scale.
Crumbling to dust in Father's hand.
The gift is complete.
The sacrifice honored.
And I—
I am CHANGED.
