"What the hell is going on with you? I did not think you did want any part of that and you said you did not, "Logan said in wonderment.
" I did not. But once I make up my mind then I wish to stick to it. I don't like being complicated and if you're going to do something, then you should do it."
"Look, Levi, if Callie does not find the evidence real fast we will be both be dead, right now I don't want you disturbing your bloody head about unnecessary things and besides let Callie go through the Mail that her mother had saved in her computer so that she will get a clue to the real Killer"
"See that's what you're thinking. It is not going to help us right now till she checks it. Why don't we see what we can do to help it get better? You're right they deserve what's coming to them."
Logan had stared at him not willing to let go wild and do something childish.
As soon as his brother woke up, they were going to head back towards the city, to hook up with their nephew and see what they could do first if it was proved that was needed. Levi believed that they should not bother their sister and her family too much as it would be dangerous for them. They had the truth on their side and if that still did not count for something, then they might as well go ahead and get themselves shot.
Levi stared at their surroundings, birds were chirping. The leaves had already started to turn here and the way the sunlight cut and dipped through the foliage presented a pleasing combination of colors and textures. They often played in the woods when hunting, he would find an old log and rest his bones taking in the simple beauty of the country, a Marvel that did not cost you a dime. After coming back from Africa he had avoided the Woods for several years. In Africa, the trees, the dirt, everything around you meant death by some of the most indigenous methods the African's would device. For a few seconds he checked his watch. Another few minutes and they would have to be on the way.
He looked back out the window and squinted as the sunlight reflected off something and hurt his eye he sucked in his next red instead of letting it go spit his cigarette out the window started the engine and put the truck in gear.
"Hey what the hell," Logan said as he was jolted awake and so did Betty and other people, who were still sleeping behind.
"Get your gun ready Red and all of you to keep your damn head down." He looked at his brother and said. "It's Brooke."
Logan clenched his fist and ducked down.
Brooke charged from the words and opened fire. The first shots from the machine gun hit the tailgate of the truck, blowing out one of the lights and riddling the frame with holes. Dirt kicked up on the body of the truck and momentarily blinded Brooke, who stopped shooting and brand forward, trying desperately to get a clear field of fire on the truck.
Sensing what Brooke was trying to do, Levi cut the wheel to the left and the truck went off the road and unto what happened to be the dry remains of the shallow Creek bed. It was a good move for another reason as Ray Reynolds came flying down the road in the Jeep from the other direction, trying to box the truck in.
Jordan signaled Reynolds to start following them and together they went after the truck.
"How in the hell did they catch up so fast?" Logan wondered aloud.
"It's no use wasting time thinking about that. They are here," Levi shot back. He glanced in the rear mirror and his eyes narrowed. The Jeep was more nimble and better built to go through the woods than the bulky truck. "They're going to shoot out the tires and they got us like siting duck," Logan said .
"Yeah well, that's the first mistake they made by shooting at the tyres."
"What was the first? "
" letting the sunlight hit his binoculars, I saw that long before I spotted that little bastard."
"Let's hope they keep making mistakes." Red said.
"We can count on ourselves, and hope that's enough. "
Then they saw that Brooke hung out the side and fired his weapon. The machine gun wasn't worth to spit long-range, although in close quarters it could take out an entire platoon of men in a few seconds , he wanted to shoot them and get it over and done with. He slipped the machine gun strap of a shoulder and pulled out his sidearm.
"Get as close as you can." He barked to a very nervous-looking Reynolds. If I can take out one of the little tires they will plow right into the tree and our problems are over."
Logan looked back through the window in the truck and saw what Brooke was attempting to do. He slid open the glass separating the cab from the interior of the jeep and you a bead on the Jeep. He had not touched a gun in almost fifteen years, basic training with a rifle was his last experience with a firearm. When he fired, the explosion Pierced his ears, the truck's cabin immediately full of the sickening fumes of flashed powder and the bullets shattered. It was a big one and everyone put their hand in their ears.
Logan looked at the people inside the jeep and saw that they were safely ducking down,
Brooke ducked back into his vehicle and the jeeps saved a little.
"Hit anything?" Levi asked.
"Brought us a little time." Logan's hand was shaking as he rubbed his ears. "I forgot how loud these things are."
"But you are too good boss." Red told him admiringly.
"Ha ha..., it's not easy to fire without practice and I think my brother is a champ." Levi whispered proudly.
Levi cut the wheel to the right and then to the left avoid several trees and then toppled across the Creek bed beyond was a mass of scrub pine, Sol and brambles. But they were closing in,
Brooke was again taking a shooting position. Levi cut the truck to the right and through the narrow claimed in the trees and brush, leaves in slender branches slapping and tearing at the truck but the man never had its intended effect because Brooke had to duck back inside the Jeep to avoid having his head turn off by the tree climb.
The path ahead towards the narrow Lane ahead opened up a little and Levi decided to take advantage, hoping Reynolds was losing a little of his nerve.
"Everyone hold on tight." he shouted to his friends ."
Levi gripped the steering wheel hard, altering between looking at his brother and eyeing where the truck was headed.
Levi pull his pistol and scanned the trees ahead of them they had driven a little further away from their pursuer and the path was not that bouncy, so the truck did not rock as much he gripped the pestle with both hands doing his best figure distance and speed and then select what he wanted.
A thick big branch high up on the gig footer. The branch was at least thirty feet long and six inches thick and with other smaller branches going from it and it hung directly over the narrow Lane. What had drawn Levi's attention was the fact that the branch was so long and heavy it has started to crack where it was attached to the trunk.
Levi slid his arms out of the window kept parallel to the truck took his gun and started firing the first bullet hit the tree trunk directly above where the branch joined. Levi continued to fire and each bullet after that hit squarely at the junction of the branch and trunk as the truck hurled closer for him it wasn't that extraordinarily a display of marksmanship. As a game , he had been shooting a hundred branches since he was old enough to carry a rifle. Scaring rabbits and squirrels having fun. Still, he had never attempted on moving a vehicle with two men shooting at him.
Logan had to keep his eyes open to steer but he scrunched up his face with each shot. His ears were ringing so loudly you could have shouted in his face and you would have been able to hear you. The heavy branches dropped a couple of inches at it as it support weekend full stops and I kept firing as sprays of wood chip shot of the Oak like steam from an old train engine.
Brooke was tensed and said. "what was he doing. Damn shoot him shoot him."
Jordan headed the car as they got closer to them.
Levi never took his eyes off the branch as he kept firing. It gives some more and finally gravity took over and it cracked and swung down. And all of a sudden the tree and then then the branches slapped hard against the trunk and broke free and it started coming down. Levi slammed on the accelerator and took the steering wheel back, passing by the tree as he did so.
"Go Adams, go, go.......", Brooke screamed at Reynolds.
However Adam slammed on the brakes and started moving his car into the middle of the narrow lane directly in front of them. Brooke was almost thrown from the vehicle.
"Damn it, why in the hell did you stop?" Brooke looked angry.
" If I had not, the damn thing would have crushed us. This Jeep doesn't have a hard top Brooke." Reynolds explained.
Levi looked up ahead and there then to the right where the Patch opened, and he could see there were two shacks opposite to each other he drove slowly and the motor of the truck broke free from the Bush, and it lifted a little off the ground as it went over a shallow gully and landed in a clearing. Logan's head hit the top of the cab anterior as the truck came back to the earth.
"Damn what are you doing?" Logan screamed.
" Just hold tight brother."
Levi slammed on the gas again and Logan looked up in time to see the small shack ahead of them that his brother had spotted seconds before.
Levi looked past the shack at an angle and could see the road that lay beyond it he had been right where there was a shack in the Woods they usually had many inside the big forest. He pulled the truck around into the other side of the old structure. Both brothers' hearts sank. There was a road there, alright but it had a large steel barricade blocking any passage. And on either side of the barricade were impenetrable woods. Levi looked back.
"Red, get everyone out of the truck and walk to the opposite side to the other shack, I am sure there will be a way out." Levi ordered urgently.
"Boss we can't leave you here." Red said.
"Listen kid I don't have time for this just listen to me and take them, we will be fine." Levi insisted.
Finally the group of four people headed towards the shack and then they vanished.
"Now what brother." Logan asked as he came and sat beside Levi.
"Well, let's wait and watch."
