Serena
The walls of our home seemed to close in as I waited for Damon to return. My nerves were on edge, suffocating me with each passing moment. The clock's monotonous ticking echoed my growing unease. I needed to reach out, to let him know what I felt, but the weight of his troubles seemed to barricade him away until I no longer knew how to reach him. I knew I had to talk to him. It was now or never.
Finally, the entrance of our tent flapped open. Damon walked in, wearing his melancholic demeanor, a weary shadow of the man I loved and married. His shoulders slumped under the invisible burden, and his eyes, once full of life, now harbored a darkness that sent shivers down my spine.
"Hey," I greeted, attempting to offer a smile that would bridge the growing distance. Damon barely acknowledged me, his things hitting the table with a hollow sound. It was as if he was miles away, lost in a world of his own. Sadly, I felt I was no longer part of that world.
"I need to talk to you, Damon," I said, my voice carrying the urgency of the words. Damon glanced at me for a moment before getting back to removing his boots. His eyes remained distant, preoccupied with thoughts I couldn't quite grasp.
"What is it, Serena? I've had a long day," he finally muttered, his tone dismissive. He headed to the side table to wash his face, oblivious to my plea for a little attention.
Taking a deep breath, I steeled myself for the confrontation that was long overdue. "Damon, you need to stop this. The revenge you're seeking against Romin is tearing you apart. It's consuming you, and I can't bear to see you like this."
He turned to face me, his eyes narrowing with a mix of frustration and determination. "You don't understand, Serena. Romin took everything from me. I won't rest until he pays for it."
My frustration boiled over, and I couldn't hold back any longer. "But, Damon, revenge won't bring back what we lost. It won't heal us. It's only driving you further into the darkness. We need to let it go. You need to let go!”
For a fleeting moment, I saw a softness in his gaze, a glimmer of the man I had fallen in love with. That vulnerability gave me a hint of hope. Hope that maybe, there was still a way to save Damon from this.
"Damon, please. Let's just run away, start fresh somewhere far from all of this. We can build a peaceful life together, away from the hatred that's consuming you, away from Romin, away from everything."
I wrapped my arms around him, as if protecting him from all the darkness hovering above him. Damon remained rooted in his spot, as I continued to tighten my grip on him.
“Please, Damon. Let’s escape this fate. Together. Please…”
Tears began to stream down my face as I made my pleas. But then, with a heavy sigh, Damon slowly removed my arms around him, devastating me.
“I can’t.”
“But why? Why?!”
Damon shook his head, running his finger through his hair. "I can't just walk away, Serena. I need to do this. I have to. I will never be at peace unless Romin pays for everything he did!”
My heart sank, realizing the depth of his commitment to the path of vengeance. The room fell into a heavy silence. Our unspoken words echoed louder than ever, leaving us both grappling with the choices that lay ahead.
“I’m sorry, Serena. But I can’t do what you ask.” With that, Damon stepped outside, leaving me with shattered hope and a trampled ego. Tears continued to stream down my face as I contemplated the loss of my beloved. I lost Damon to the darkness completely, and it wasn’t easy to accept.
That night, sleep eluded me. I mourned the loss of the wolf I had decided to give my life to, wondering if he would ever make a comeback into my life.
And yet, I acknowledged the need for me to stop hoping and move on. If Damon couldn’t leave this pursuit of revenge to have a quiet life with me, then so be it.
The whole day, I decided to prepare for my upcoming departure discreetly. Slowly, I packed only those things that were essential to my journey, as I didn’t want anyone to suspect my plan. Luckily, Damon was out training while the others, including Ashford and Alexei, were doing their own things.
As soon as the sun set, I began my move. I scanned our tent one last time, reminiscing about all the good memories we had in there. With one final breath, I decided to leave, but not before leaving a letter for the man who still held my heart despite everything.
Successfully, I sneaked out towards Alicia’s cabin without drawing any attention from the group. Alicia didn’t seem to be surprised upon seeing me, as if she was already expecting my arrival. With that, she gestured her head, signaling the start of our journey, but our steps were halted upon hearing the voice of a man from behind.
“Where do you think you’re going?” he said, as my heart hammered inside my chest.
