Never Just Friends

Emily’s Warning

Ch. 86 / 300 Mar 01, 2026

Emily was sitting on the steps outside the school when she overheard Marco’s raised voice as he spoke to Hanna. She couldn’t make out every word, but the anger and accusation in his tone was clear. She glanced over, watching as Hanna’s shoulders hunched, her body language defensive as she tried to answer him calmly. But Marco wouldn’t relent, his voice sharp and forceful.

“Why do you even need him, Hanna?” he demanded, his tone bordering on desperation. “I’m your boyfriend. Why isn’t that enough?”

Hanna shook her head, her voice quiet but firm. “Marco, it’s not about needing him. It’s about passing my classes. I don’t know how many times I have to explain this to you.”

Emily felt a surge of protectiveness for her friend and, after a few minutes, walked over as Marco finally stormed off, muttering under his breath. Hanna stayed where she was, clearly shaken, rubbing her temples as if trying to ward off a headache. Emily touched her arm gently, startling her.

“Hey, are you okay?” Emily asked softly, her eyes filled with concern.

Hanna forced a smile, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “Yeah. I mean… no. Not really.”

Emily nodded, sitting beside her. “I couldn’t help but hear… a little. Look, Hanna, I don’t want to interfere, but I’ve been watching the way Marco’s been acting lately. I’m worried about you.”

Hanna’s gaze dropped, and she took a deep breath, her fingers fiddling with the hem of her sleeve. “He just gets… so intense. It’s like he doesn’t trust me, no matter what I say. And he keeps saying it’s because of Finn, like he thinks there’s something going on.”

“Maybe because he knows there is?” Emily suggested gently, her tone careful. “Even if you’re not consciously doing anything, Hanna, there’s something you’re feeling, right?”

Hanna closed her eyes, her voice a whisper. “Maybe. But that doesn’t excuse how Marco’s treating me.”

Emily nodded, taking her friend’s hand. “Hanna, I know what it’s like to be in a relationship where someone tries to control you. That’s not love—that’s insecurity, and it only gets worse over time. You deserve to be with someone who trusts you.”

Her words struck a chord, and Hanna looked up, feeling the weight of Emily’s advice settle over her. She’d gone to Marco because he was safe, because he was the one who’d been there when things with Finn had fallen apart. But now, she wondered if she’d rushed into something that wasn’t right for her, simply to escape the pain.

“Thanks, Emily,” she whispered, her voice filled with gratitude. “I think… I needed to hear that.”

Emily squeezed her hand. “Just think about it. And remember, you have people who care about you. You don’t have to stay with someone who makes you feel like you’re walking on eggshells.”

Hanna nodded, feeling a quiet strength building within her, but also a deep confusion about what she truly wanted.
