Never Just Friends

Emily and Elordi’s Slow Burn

Ch. 79 / 300 Mar 01, 2026

Emily and Elordi had been officially dating for only a few weeks, but the way they gravitated toward each other made it feel like they’d been together for ages. Between classes, during study sessions, and at school events, they’d seamlessly fallen into a rhythm that felt both easy and exciting. Their friends noticed how they laughed together over the smallest things, how their fingers intertwined whenever they walked side-by-side, and how, even in silence, they seemed connected.

But with each new moment spent together, Emily found herself both exhilarated and slightly apprehensive. She was happy, more so than she’d expected, but sometimes, a flicker of doubt would catch her off guard, as if she was waiting for the other shoe to drop.

One evening after school, they were sprawled out on the bleachers, their books lying forgotten beside them. The sky had turned a soft shade of orange, and the school grounds were nearly deserted. Elordi reached for her hand, his thumb absentmindedly brushing over her fingers as he looked at her with his usual easygoing smile.

“Alright, what’s on your mind?” he asked, his voice gentle.

Emily bit her lip, looking away for a moment before finally meeting his gaze. “I… I don’t know. It’s silly.”

“Try me,” he urged, his tone playful but encouraging.

She hesitated, then took a deep breath. “I just… I really like you, Elordi. A lot. But sometimes I get nervous. Like maybe I’ll lose myself in this—or mess it up somehow. I know it’s irrational, but I can’t help it.”

Elordi’s smile softened, and he leaned closer, squeezing her hand reassuringly. “I get it, Em. It’s not silly. And you’re not going to lose yourself—not with me.” He paused, choosing his words carefully. “Relationships don’t have to be about losing anything. I don’t want you to feel like you’re giving up any part of who you are.”

She felt herself relax, her shoulders easing as she looked at him with a small smile. “Thank you for saying that.”

Elordi shrugged, his gaze warm. “I’m not going anywhere, okay? We’re in this together. And if you need space, time—whatever you need, I’ll be here.”

Their conversation shifted, and as the sun sank lower, they began talking about the future. They shared their college plans, debating everything from majors to dorm choices, and before they knew it, they were mapping out ideas of how they could make it work together. Their laughter echoed across the empty field as they imagined shared road trips and midnight study sessions, the kind of dreams that felt bigger than anything they’d planned for themselves.

As the stars began to appear overhead, Emily nestled closer to Elordi, her heart swelling with a newfound certainty. This was more than just a high school relationship—it felt real, steady, and safe in a way she hadn’t expected.

By the time they left the bleachers, hand-in-hand, their plans for the future felt a little more solid, their connection a little deeper, and Emily’s worries had quieted, replaced by a warm sense of excitement for what lay ahead.
