POV Cassidy
The sound of warriors preparing for battle filled the morning air— tactical discussions in hushed voices, the controlled tension of people facing possible death.
I stood next to Theo as the pack moved into formation, pressure building in my chest with every heartbeat.
"I should be going with you," I said for the third time.
"And I should be focused on strategy instead of worrying about your safety," he replied firmly. "Cassidy, you've been a wolf for exactly two days. You're not ready for this kind of combat."
"I'm your Luna. My place is beside you."
"Your place is protecting our people." His hands framed my face, eyes serious. "The children, the elderly, the mothers who can't fight—they need their Luna keeping them safe while their warriors defend the borders."
Logically, I understood. But every instinct screamed that I should be fighting alongside my mate, not hiding in the village while he faced mortal danger.
Xander appeared beside us, fully ready and radiating lethal purpose. "We need to move. Scouts report Marcus is positioning for coordinated assault within the hour."
Theo kissed me deeply, pouring everything he couldn't say into the connection between us.
"I love you," he whispered against my lips. "Keep them safe."
"Come back to me."
"Always."
I watched them disappear into the forest with twenty of our strongest warriors, my heart following them into danger while my body remained behind.
The pack's schoolhouse had been converted into a makeshift shelter. Mothers sat with children ranging from toddlers to teenagers, their faces showing the strain of trying to appear calm while their mates went to war.
"Miss Cassidy," six-year-old Lily tugged on my shirt. "Are the bad wolves going to hurt us?"
"No, sweetheart." I knelt to her level, projecting confidence I didn't entirely feel. "Our warriors are very strong, and they'll keep us safe."
"My daddy went to fight," eight-year-old Bobby whispered, his eyes wide with fear.
"So did mine," Lily replied solemnly.
I gathered the children into a circle for story time, choosing tales of brave heroes and happy endings while keeping one ear tuned to sounds from the forest. Every distant howl made my pulse spike.
That's when she appeared in the schoolhouse doorway like a nightmare given form.
"Well, well," Tessa said, her voice dripping venom. "The great Luna, hiding with the children while real wolves handle the fighting."
The mothers immediately moved to shield their young ones, but I stood slowly, meeting Tessa's malicious gaze directly.
"You shouldn't be here."
"Why? Because your precious Alpha told me to leave?" She laughed. "I go where I please. And right now, I want to see the pathetic outsider who thinks she can lead this pack."
"Leave. Now."
"Or what? You'll what, exactly?" Tessa stepped closer, and I caught the scent of something wild and desperate on her. "You're nothing but a weak human playing dress-up in a world you'll never understand. These people will see through your act eventually."
Her words hit exactly where she intended, striking at insecurities I thought I'd overcome.
"You don't belong here," she continued, circling like a predator. "You'll never be strong enough, smart enough, or worthy enough to be Luna. When Marcus wins, when your precious Theo and Xander are dead, they'll come crawling to someone with real power."
"Stop." My voice carried warning that made the children press closer to their mothers.
"The truth hurts, doesn't it? You're just a substitute, a consolation prize because they couldn't have someone better." Her smile turned vicious. "Even Xander knew you weren't worth fighting for."
Something inside me snapped.
When Tessa lunged forward with claws extended, my wolf instincts took over. I shifted partially—not fully into wolf form, but enough that enhanced strength and speed flooded my system. My fingernails became claws, my senses sharpened to supernatural levels.
The fight that followed was brutal and desperate. Tessa had more experience, but I had fury and the absolute determination to protect the children watching wide-eyed from the corner.
We crashed through desks and chairs, claws raking across skin, supernatural strength making every impact dangerous. When Tessa went for my throat, I caught her wrist and twisted until she screamed.
"You want to see weak?" I snarled, my partially shifted voice carrying notes of wolf authority. "Try me."
I slammed her against the wall with force. Tessa's eyes widened with shock and fear as she realized I was stronger than she'd expected.
"Leave," I commanded with Luna's authority. "Leave this territory and never return. Next time I see you, I won't show mercy."
Tessa scrambled for the door, her confidence shattered. "This isn't over."
"Yes, it is."
After she fled, I turned to find the children staring at me with expressions of awe rather than fear.
"That was amazing," Lily breathed. "You protected us like a real Luna."
Their faith in me was humbling, but it also crystallized something important.
I couldn't just sit here waiting while Theo fought for all our lives. My place was beside him, not hiding in safety while he faced danger alone.
"Mrs. Brown," I called to the retired teacher who'd been helping supervise. "Can you watch them for a while?"
"Where are you going?"
"To help my mate."
I ran into the forest, letting the mate bond guide me toward Theo's location. My wolf senses made navigation easy even through dense trees, following the pull in my chest that connected me to him.
The sounds of battle reached me before I saw anything—howls of pain and rage, the crash of bodies colliding, the scent of blood heavy in the night air.
When I finally reached the clearing where the main conflict was taking place, chaos unfolded before my eyes. Warriors clashed in both human and wolf forms, the forest echoing with supernatural combat that seemed to shake the earth itself.
And there, in the center of it all, Theo faced Marcus in single combat that would determine everything.
My breath caught as I watched my mate struggle against an opponent with superior size and experience. Marcus's massive wolf form dwarfed Theo's, and even from a distance I could see blood matting my mate's brown fur.
Theo stumbled, his legs shaking with exhaustion and blood loss. Marcus circled for a killing strike.
I gasped, terror freezing my blood as I realized I might be watching the man I loved die before my eyes.
