Moon Goddess, Name Him

chapter 19

Ch. 19 / 30 Apr 10, 2026

POV Cassidy

My car shuddered to a stop on the most isolated stretch of Mountain Road, steam hissing from under the hood like an angry snake.

"Perfect," I muttered, pulling over to the gravel shoulder. My phone showed no bars, and the nearest house was at least two miles away. The sun was setting fast, and these mountain roads turned dangerous after dark.

I popped the hood and stared at the engine like it might reveal its secrets through sheer willpower. Steam billowed up from somewhere near the radiator, but beyond that, I was completely lost.

The sound of tires on gravel made me look up hopefully. A sleek silver sedan was pulling over behind me, hazard lights blinking.

My hope died when Tessa Quinn stepped out.

"Well, well," she called, her designer heels clicking on asphalt as she approached. "Car trouble? How unfortunate."

Every instinct I possessed screamed danger. "I'm fine, thanks. Already called for help."

"On what phone?" She glanced pointedly at my cell, which I'd forgotten was still showing no signal. "Darling, there's no service for miles up here. But I'd be happy to give you a ride back to town."

"That's very kind, but I'll wait for AAA."

"AAA?" Tessa laughed, the sound sharp as breaking glass. "Honey, this is Moon Hollow. Our idea of roadside assistance is hoping someone with jumper cables drives by." She leaned against my car with casual elegance. "Besides, it's getting dark. These roads can be treacherous after sunset."

"I appreciate the offer, but I'm fine."

"Of course you are. So independent, so self-sufficient." Her tone dripped false sweetness. "Just like I was at your age. Before I learned that sometimes accepting help is the smart choice, not the proud one."

"I said I'm fine."

"Suit yourself." Tessa shrugged, but her eyes glittered with malicious amusement. "Though I do wonder what Theo would say about his precious girlfriend stranded alone on a dangerous road. Or perhaps Xander? Hard to know which one would worry more."

Heat flooded my cheeks. "I don't know what you're talking about."

"Don't you? Small towns have eyes everywhere, darling. People notice things. Like which Muray brother visits your cottage. And how often." She examined her perfectly manicured nails. "Of course, maybe you're just being practical. Why choose one when you can keep both interested? Smart strategy, really."

"You don't know anything about my life."

"I know enough. I know you're playing with fire, and someone's going to get burned." Her smile turned predatory. "The question is whether it'll be you or them."

The rumble of a motorcycle engine cut through the evening air. Relief flooded through me as headlights appeared around the curve, growing brighter as the bike approached.

Xander pulled up beside us, removing his helmet to reveal eyes that took in the situation instantly. His gaze moved from my broken-down car to Tessa's predatory smile, and something dangerous flickered across his features.

"Problem here?" he asked, his voice flat as a winter stone.

"Just offering assistance to a stranded motorist," Tessa replied sweetly. "Though she seems determined to handle things herself."

"I'm sure she does." Xander's attention focused on me with laser intensity. "Cassidy? You need help?"

"My car overheated. I was just about to walk back to town."

"In the dark? On this road?" He swung off the motorcycle with fluid grace. "Not happening."

"How chivalrous," Tessa observed with acid sweetness. "Always the knight in shining armor, aren't you, Xander? Some habits never change."

Xander's jaw ticked with controlled rage. "Some people never change either. Still stirring up trouble wherever you go?"

"I'm simply being helpful. Unlike some people, I don't abandon those who need me."

The words hit their target. Xander's hands clenched into fists, but his voice remained dangerously calm.

"Get in your car, Tessa. Leave."

"Or what? You'll make me?" She laughed, the sound brittle as autumn leaves. "How wonderfully predictable. Still solving problems with intimidation instead of intelligence."

"Final warning."

Something in his tone made Tessa's smile falter. She retreated toward her sedan with less confidence than she'd approached.

"This isn't over," she called before slamming her door. "Some conversations are just postponed, not canceled."

Her taillights disappeared around the bend, leaving us alone in gathering darkness.

"Come with me," Xander said simply, holding out his helmet. "I know somewhere we can talk."

I should have insisted on calling Theo, should have waited for a tow truck, should have made sensible choices. Instead, I took the helmet.

The motorcycle ride was exhilarating in ways I'd never imagined. Fast, dangerous, completely alive. Pressed against Xander's back, feeling the power of the machine beneath us and the wind whipping past, I felt more awake than I had in years.

This was what life with Xander would be like—intense, unpredictable, transformative.

He stopped at a cliff overlook where the entire valley spread below us like scattered diamonds. Moon Hollow's lights twinkled in the distance, peaceful and small from this height.

"Thank you," I said, removing the helmet. "For rescuing me."

"Tessa's dangerous. She wouldn't have hurt you physically, but she has other ways of causing damage."

We sat on the rocky ledge, our legs dangling over empty air. The silence felt heavy with unspoken possibilities.

"You are strong," Xander said finally, studying my face in the moonlight. "I see the steel underneath the softness. The capacity for hard decisions when protecting what you love."

His words awakened something primal in my chest. With Theo, I felt safe to be gentle, to trust that he'd handle the difficult choices. But Xander saw my potential for power and didn't fear it.

"You make me feel dangerous," I admitted. "Like I could be someone I've never imagined."

"I don't want to make you feel safe," he said, voice rough with honesty. "I want to help you burn brighter. You have something in you that matches mine—not darkness, but strength. How far would you go to protect what you love?"

"I don't know," I whispered.

"I think you do."

Our kiss was inevitable—desperate, passionate, full of recognition that terrified and thrilled me equally. For endless moments, nothing existed except the supernatural connection demanding acknowledgment.

I tasted possibility and danger and complete understanding.

Then Theo's face flashed in my mind—his trust, his gentle love, his belief in my goodness.

I broke away, tears streaming down my cheeks.

"I can't betray him," I gasped. "No matter what I feel for you, I can't."

Xander accepted my decision with dignity that made my heart break more completely.

"I know," he said quietly. "He brings out your light. I would have shown you your shadow."

He paused, silver eyes reflecting moonlight like mirrors.

"Both have their place, Cassidy. But only one of us can have you."

I felt like it was time to make a decision soon.
