Moon Goddess, Name Him

chapter 18

Ch. 18 / 30 Apr 10, 2026

POV Cassidy

A package waited on my doorstep when I returned from school, wrapped in brown paper and tied with simple twine.

Inside were three leather-bound books, their covers worn soft with age. The Politics of Pack Leadership, Legendary Lunas: Women Who Shaped History, and Supernatural Governance: Theory and Practice. A note in strong handwriting was tucked between the pages.

Thought you might find these interesting. - X

I should have set them aside. Should have focused on grading papers or preparing tomorrow's lessons. Instead, I found myself curled on my couch with the Luna history book, completely absorbed.

The stories fascinated me. Women who'd navigated complex political landscapes, balancing tradition with innovation. Lunas who'd prevented wars through strategic alliances, who'd revolutionized pack structures to protect the vulnerable.

These weren't passive partners supporting their Alpha mates—they were leaders in their own right, wielding influence that shaped entire supernatural societies.

"The most effective Lunas understood that true power lies not in commanding obedience, but in inspiring transformation," I read aloud to my empty living room.

A knock interrupted my reading. I opened the door to find Xander holding two cups of coffee from June's diner, his expression carefully neutral.

"Find anything interesting?" he asked, that slight smile playing at the corners of his mouth.

"You could say that." I stepped aside to let him enter, acutely aware of how he seemed to fill the space with his presence. "These books are incredible. I had no idea Lunas’ history was so complex."

"Most people don't. The stories get simplified over time, reduced to romantic fairy tales about devoted mates." He handed me one of the coffees, his fingers brushing mine in a way that sent electricity up my arm. "But you're seeing the real picture now."

We settled on opposite ends of my couch, the books scattered between us like bridges across dangerous territory.

"This section is about pack governance structures," I said, flipping to marked pages. "The way Luna Moreno reformed the territorial dispute resolution process in the 1800s. She prevented decades of warfare by creating neutral arbitration councils."

"Brilliant strategy. She understood that sustainable peace requires institutions, not just individual charisma." Xander leaned forward, intensity building in his voice. "But look at what she accomplished afterward. Three separate packs merged under her leadership, creating the largest supernatural alliance in North American history."

"Until it fell apart when she died."

"Because no one else had her vision. She built something revolutionary but couldn't institutionalize it." His gray eyes caught the lamplight. "That's the difference between temporary reform and lasting transformation."

The conversation that followed was unlike anything I'd ever experienced. We discussed Luna responsibilities, pack politics, the delicate balance between supernatural tradition and necessary change.

Xander's insights were brilliant—he saw patterns and connections that hadn't occurred to me, understood implications I'd missed entirely.

"The werewolf world is stagnant," he said, setting down his empty coffee cup. "Packs operate the same way they did centuries ago. Hierarchies based on physical strength rather than intelligence. Territorial disputes solved through violence instead of negotiation. It's primitive."

"But changing centuries of tradition would be nearly impossible."

"For most people, yes. But you're not most people." He studied my face with that penetrating gaze that made me feel exposed and exhilarated simultaneously. "You could reshape everything, Cassidy. Not just this pack, but the entire werewolf world. You have the intelligence and strength to lead real change."

His words awakened something deep in my chest—ambitions I didn't know I harbored, dreams I'd never allowed myself to acknowledge.

With Theo, I imagined peaceful domestic happiness, building a life together one day at a time.

But with Xander, I envisioned wielding power for positive transformation, leaving a legacy that would outlast my lifetime.

"Most people want to protect you or please you," Xander continued, his voice dropping to that rough honey tone that made my pulse quicken. "I want to challenge you to become legendary."

The silence stretched between us, loaded with possibilities and dangers in equal measure. He wasn't offering me safety or comfort. He was offering me greatness, and the recognition that I might be capable of achieving it.

"The books suggest Luna power operates differently than Alpha authority," I said, trying to keep the conversation academic even as my heart hammered against my ribs.

"Completely different. Alphas rule through dominance and physical strength. Lunas lead through wisdom, strategy, and emotional intelligence." He reached for the governance text, his hand brushing against mine as he turned pages. "Luna power is subtle but often more effective. The best Alphas understand they need Luna guidance to truly succeed."

"And if Luna is more capable than her Alpha?"

"Then she finds ways to lead from behind the scenes. Or she finds an Alpha worthy of her abilities." His eyes met mine directly. "The question is whether you're willing to settle for less than you deserve."

The implication hung between us like a challenge. Was he suggesting Theo wasn't worthy of me? Or was he positioning himself as the better option?

"I should probably get some sleep," I said, suddenly overwhelmed by the intensity of our conversation and my body's reaction to his proximity.

"Of course." He stood, gathering his jacket with fluid grace. "Keep the books as long as you need them. There's more where those came from."

"Xander?"

He paused in the doorway, half-turned toward me.

"Thank you. For seeing something in me I didn't know existed."

"I see what's already there, Cassidy. The question is whether you'll let it grow or suppress it for the sake of other people's comfort."

After he left, I stared at the books scattered around my living room, my mind reeling with new possibilities. Two men were offering me completely different futures.

Theo promised contentment, partnership, a life built on mutual support and gentle love.

Xander offered challenge, transformation, the chance to become someone who could change the world.

Both futures appealed to different parts of my soul.

For the first time since arriving in Moon Hollow, I genuinely didn't know which I wanted more.
