POV Cassidy
The last person I expected to see at my cottage during training was Tessa Quinn.
She stood on my porch holding a wicker basket, her designer clothes perfectly coordinated and her smile radiating false warmth.
"I hope I'm not intruding," she said warmly. "Theo mentioned he would be here today, and I thought this might be a perfect opportunity for us to get to know each other better."
She lifted the basket slightly. "I brought some treats and fresh fruit from the farmer's market. I figured you might all be hungry after your early start."
Before I could respond, Theo and Xander appeared from my living room.
"Tessa," Theo said with surprise. "I didn't expect you to actually follow through on meeting Cassidy again. I mentioned you should be nicer next time, but I thought you'd prefer to wait until things settled down."
I couldn’t believe it. Theo had been talking to Tessa? When? And he'd suggested she meet me without bothering to mention it? Heat flooded my cheeks from indignation.
"Why wait?" Tessa's smile brightened as she stepped inside without invitation. "If Cassidy is going to be part of our community, we should be friends."
Ruth emerged from the kitchen, her ancient eyes taking in our unexpected visitor with careful interest. She said nothing, but I caught the slight tightening around her eyes.
"Please, everyone, sit," Tessa said, already moving toward my kitchen table like she belonged here. "I have plenty for everyone."
We gathered around the table as Tessa efficiently unpacked homemade pastries, fresh strawberries, and what looked like expensive chocolates. She moved with practiced social grace, filling the silence with cheerful chatter about the weather and local preparations for the moonrise ceremony rehearsal.
"So," Tessa said after we'd all accepted her offerings, "what exactly brings everyone together here so early? It's quite the gathering."
Ruth remained completely silent, focusing on her tea with deliberate concentration.
"That's none of your business," Xander said bluntly, his gray eyes cold as winter.
"Xander, don't be so rude," Theo chided immediately. "Tessa wants to return to pack life, as you. She has a right to know what's happening in the community, especially since she's making an effort to be supportive."
Unease twisted through me at his words. Theo's instinct to give everyone second chances, even the woman who'd shattered his heart and torn apart his family was showing. Watching him defend Tessa while she sat there with that practiced smile made me sick.
Tessa's expression turned grateful. "I just want to understand how I can help. Why is Ruth here? Is this some kind of pack business? And why are both of you here together?"
Theo glanced at Ruth, then at me, clearly wanting to share but uncertain how much to reveal. I didn’t want him to tell everything but I wanted to understand how much Tessa had managed to gain his trust.
"Cassidy is going through some important training," he said carefully. "She should be transforming into her wolf form soon, and Ruth is helping guide—"
"Stop here," Ruth interrupted sharply. "Some matters require discretion."
Tessa nodded respectfully, though I caught the curiosity in her eyes. "Of course. I understand completely. These things must be handled carefully."
The familiar burning sensation flared along my collarbone as if triggered by the conversation. I gasped, pressing my hand against the marks that pulsed with uncomfortable heat.
"Breathe through it," Ruth instructed, immediately shifting into healer mode. "Don't fight the sensation."
I closed my eyes and tried to sense the wolf nature beneath the magical suppression, but it felt like grasping smoke.
"You're doing wonderfully," Tessa said softly. "These changes must be so challenging. I'm sure Ruth's guidance will help you through it."
When I opened my eyes, Theo was watching Tessa with something that looked like appreciation for her supportive attitude.
A sharp pang of jealousy cut through me. How could he not see what she was doing? There he sat, drawn in by her performance, completely blind to the manipulation happening right in front of him.
I forced myself to look away, swallowing the bitter taste of frustration. There was nothing I could do about Theo's misplaced trust right now, and letting my emotions spiral would only make Ruth's training harder.
The training session that followed pushed me to my limits. Ruth guided me through breathing exercises and meditation techniques designed to connect with my wolf, but each attempt left me more drained.
"The transformation approaches," Ruth observed as we finished. "The choice cannot be delayed much longer."
Her words settled over me like a weight I couldn't shake. Time was running out, as evening fell, an emergency pack meeting was called. We gathered in the community center, where Scout Captain Noah Ahoka waited with intelligence reports that made the room fall silent.
"We've confirmed that Marcus Blackwood has become the new Alpha of Shadowridge Pack," Noah announced. "He eliminated the previous leadership through challenge combat and has been consolidating power for the past month."
Concerned murmurs rippled through the assembled pack members.
"What do we know about his background?" Elder Malia Pat asked.
"He's younger than his predecessor, more aggressive in his approach to territorial disputes. Our sources indicate he's been reaching out to other packs, possibly building alliances."
"His rhetoric has been hostile toward established pack hierarchies," another scout added. "He's spoken publicly about the need for 'new leadership' in the region."
"So he represents a direct threat," Xander observed.
"That's still being assessed," Noah replied carefully. "But his recent actions suggest expansion may be on his agenda."
From the back of the room, Tessa raised her hand politely.
"If I may offer a suggestion," she began. "Perhaps instead of remaining suspicious and preparing for conflict, we should consider establishing contact with this new Alpha. Sometimes open dialogue can end feuds that have persisted too long."
The room went completely silent as pack members processed this unexpected proposal.
"That's actually a very thoughtful approach," Theo said immediately, his voice carrying conviction. "We could extend an invitation for formal diplomatic discussion. Show good faith instead of assuming hostility."
I glanced around the room. Elder faces showed skepticism while younger pack members seemed more open to the possibility. Xander's expression had darkened considerably.
"It's worth considering all options," Theo continued diplomatically. "The pack council will discuss this further as an option."
As the meeting dispersed, I noticed pack members talking in hushed groups, suddenly Xander caught my arm gently.
"Walk with me," he said quietly.
We stepped away from the community center into the darkness where we couldn't be overheard.
"Don't trust her," Xander said without preamble. "Whatever game Tessa's playing, it has nothing to do with helping this pack. She seemed concerned about positioning herself as the voice of reason," he corrected, his voice grim. "Making herself indispensable to the decision-making process."
His eyes reflected moonlight like mirrors. "I know her, Cassidy. I know exactly what she's capable of when she wants something. And right now, she wants back into pack leadership."
"Through me?"
"Through whoever gives her the fastest path to power. I'm sure she wants to take the Luna’s place that she could have once become."
