Chapter 16

Ch. 16 / 255 May 14, 2026

I arrive at the VR club with one goal: proof.

Same strip mall between the laundromat and the nail salon. Same bored guy behind the counter who doesn't bother looking up from his phone. Same booth seven in the back, with its worn chair and peeling posters and the lingering smell of energy drinks and desperation. I pay for two hours again and slide on the headset before I can talk myself out of whatever I'm about to do.

Echo loads around me in layers — sound first, then light, then the familiar forest zone materializing like coming home. The stone bridge appears, ancient and solid, and Ghost is already there. Waiting. Like he's been counting the seconds since I left.

"Siren." His voice wraps around me like something warm and dangerous. "You came back."

We play for twenty minutes, falling into comfortable rhythms. A quest in the forest, something simple, our avatars moving in sync the way they always do. But my mind is elsewhere — on Ghost saying he loves someone and doesn't know if it's mutual, on coincidences stacking up like evidence I'm terrified to examine.

I need to know if I'm the girl he loves. And I know exactly how to find out.

If he wants me — really wants me — he won't refuse what I'm about to ask. But if I'm just a friend, just a gaming partner, he'll make an excuse. He'll pull away.

Finally, I stop mid-quest. My avatar freezes in a clearing, moonlight filtering through digital trees.

"Ghost. I want to go to the Love Room."

Silence stretches between us, heavy with possibility. I can almost hear him thinking — weighing, calculating, deciding how much risk he's willing to take.

"Are you sure?" he asks carefully.

"I'm sure. I have almost two hours left in a private booth. No one can see what I'm doing." I pause, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Unless you don't want to."

"I want to. God, Siren, I want to." His voice drops lower, rougher. "I just need to know you're ready. Really ready. Because there are rules about this — boundaries we've never crossed."

"Rules are optional, Ghost." I can hear the smirk in my own voice. "Remember?"

A low laugh that sends warmth spreading through my chest. "Using my own words against me."

"Someone taught me well."

The world shifts around us, dissolving and reforming into something new. The Love Room isn't just darkness this time — it's a space that breathes with desire. Soft light pulses along the walls, shifting colors that seem to respond to our heartbeats, our anticipation. In the center, a bed materializes, draped in silk that shimmers like liquid gold. Along the edges, I notice other things — restraints hanging like art installations, toys displayed on velvet, ropes coiled in elegant spirals. The game is showing us everything it offers.

"I didn't know it had all this," I breathe.

"Neither did I." Ghost's voice is rough, strained. "We didn't exactly look around last time."

He moves toward me, and the lights pulse brighter. When he reaches for my face, golden sparks trail from his fingertips like he's made of light itself. The touch translates into warmth blooming across my real skin, my real body already responding to something that isn't technically happening.

"Tell me what you want," he says.

"Everything."

He kisses me slowly this time. Tender. Intentional. His mouth moves against mine like he's memorizing the shape of me, and his hands slide down my body — shoulders, waist, hips — leaving trails of warmth everywhere they touch. My avatar's clothes dissolve like mist, and I gasp against his mouth as cool air meets heated skin.

"You're beautiful," he murmurs against my throat. "I've imagined this. Every night since I met you."

"Lie down," he whispers.

I obey. The silk beneath me molds to my body, cool and warm at the same time, supporting me like being held. Soft restraints materialize around my wrists — not tight, just present. A question.

"Is this okay?"

"Yes."

He trails kisses down my throat, my collarbone, lower. The game translates every touch into sensation that floods my real body — heat and pressure and electricity sparking through nerve endings I forgot I had. When his mouth finds my breast, I cry out, back arching off the silk.

"Touch yourself," Ghost says, his voice gone dark and commanding in a way that makes my stomach flip. "I want to watch you."

My hand slides between my legs before I can overthink it. In real life, in the dim booth, my fingers find the wetness waiting there. In the game, Ghost watches with hungry eyes as I begin to move.

The lights swirl faster, synced to my breathing, my heartbeat, the rhythm building between us. His hands roam my body while I work myself higher and higher, animated sensations layering over my own touch until I can't tell where the game ends and my body begins.

"I need more," I gasp. "I need you inside me. Please."

He positions himself between my legs, looking down at me with something like reverence. "Are you sure?"

"I've never been more sure of anything."

The first press is slow, gentle. The game simulates everything — the pressure, the stretch, the fullness — and my real body responds like it's actually happening. He begins to move, slow at first, then building, and the lights explode into cascades of gold and rose around us. Every thrust sends sparks shooting through me.

"Faster," I beg. "Please—"

He complies. The pleasure coils tighter and tighter, building toward something explosive. I'm right on the edge, teetering—

"Come for me," Ghost commands. "Let go. I've got you."

I shatter. The orgasm crashes through me like a wave — in the game and in real life, my body convulsing, my cry echoing off the walls of the booth. Ghost groans above me, and I swear I feel him break apart too.

Afterwards, we lie tangled together in the virtual silk. My body is wrung out, boneless, still pulsing with aftershocks. Ghost traces lazy patterns on my shoulder, and for a long moment, neither of us speaks.

"Siren," he says softly. "There's something I want to send you. A gift. Something real." He pauses. "Is there a post office near you? Somewhere I could mail it?"

My heart stutters. This is him reaching into the real world. Crossing the line between digital and physical.

I give him an address — a post office in the next district over. Neutral ground.

Ghost goes quiet. Too quiet.

"Wait," he says slowly. "Is that... Illinois?"

My blood runs cold. "Yeah. I live nearby. Why?"

Another pause, longer this time. Heavy with something I can't name. "The thing is... I live near there too, Siren. We're closer than I ever thought."

Illinois. The same district. Twenty minutes from West Side College.

My timer flashes — five minutes remaining.

"I have to go," I manage, my voice distant. "Five minutes left."

"Same time next weekend?"

"Yeah. Same time."

The world fades. I rip off the headset and sit in the dark booth, hands shaking, body still humming from what we did.

Illinois. The same area. But that doesn't mean anything, right? Millions of people live here. Thousands of guys go to colleges they didn't want to attend. The phrase — rules are optional — people say the same things all the time. Coincidence.

It doesn't have to be Danny. Ghost is Ghost. Danny is Danny. Two different people. They have to be.

Because if the man I hate and the man I love are the same person, then everything I thought I knew about both of them is wrong. And I'm not ready for that world.

I sit in the booth, repeating the denial like a prayer.

It's not him. It can't be him.

But the doubt is already taking root, spreading through my chest like poison.

And I have no idea how to stop it.
