Chapter 39

Ch. 39 / 255 May 14, 2026

Nora’s POV

We don't make it past the front door.

Danny's keys hit the lock, the deadbolt turns, and the door swings open into darkness. I'm through it first but he's right behind me — his hand catching my wrist, spinning me, pressing my back against the wall before the door has even closed.

His mouth finds mine and the kiss is not gentle, careful or tender.

This is a month of wanting to be compressed into a single point of contact.

His body pins me to the wall, one thigh between mine, hands gripping my hips hard enough to bruise. I arch into him and the friction sends a jolt through me that makes my nails dig into his shoulders through the leather.

"Door," I gasp against his mouth.

He kicks it shut without breaking the kiss.

His mouth drags down my jaw, my neck, teeth grazing the spot below my ear that he's been weaponizing since he discovered it.

My head falls back against the wall and a sound escapes me that would make his mother reach for the gospel playlist.

"You did that on purpose," he says against my throat. "The whole night. The jacket. The look. The thing on the bike."

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"Liar." He bites down on my pulse point — not hard, just enough — and my spine turns to liquid. "You've been torturing me for four hours."

"Three and a half."

"Nora."

"Fine. Four." I pull his face back to mine, kissing him deep. "But I have an idea before you do anything about it."

His mouth stills against my jaw. "An idea. Right now."

"The upgrade." I tilt my head toward the headsets on the nightstand, visible past his shoulder in the dark. "The forest zone turned a goblin fight into foreplay. Imagine what it does to the Love Room."

His whole body goes rigid against mine. I feel the breath leave him — a slow, shattered exhale against my collarbone — and his fingers tighten on my hips.

"You want to test the Love Room," he says carefully. "Right now. When I'm this close to losing my mind."

"I want to feel it in both worlds." I drag my nails lightly down his chest. "At the same time."

He pulls back far enough to look at me. His eyes are blown dark, jaw tight, every muscle coiled.

I watch him weigh it — the wanting against the waiting, the body against the game, the twelve feet between this wall and the mattress where the headsets sit.

"You're going to kill me," he says.

"Probably. But what a way to go."

We hit the mattress in a tangle. Jackets and shirts discarded between the wall and the bed, jeans kicked off.

We pull on the headsets half-naked and flushed — the absurdity of strapping on VR equipment like suiting up for a mission makes me laugh against the visor.

Echo loads. The Love Room loads and my breath stops.

The upgrade rebuilt it from the ground up. The darkness breathes — shifting in layers of black and violet that pulse like a living thing. The silk bed materializes, fabric rippling with a responsiveness that knows exactly why we're here.

Our breathing feeds back through the headsets in surround, layered and intimate. Danny's exhale sounds like his lips are against my ear.

"Holy shit," Ghost whispers.

The biometric sync activates — reading my heart rate, my skin temperature, the arousal still humming through my real body. Warmth blooms across my skin with no physical source. The game knows I'm already halfway gone and meets me there.

Ghost reaches for me. Golden light trails from his fingertips as he traces my collarbone, and the pressure translates to my real skin.

Then Danny's real hand mirrors it — synchronized perfectly — and the doubled sensation makes my spine arch off the bed.

"Both," I breathe. "I want both."

Ghost's avatar lowers me onto virtual silk while Danny's real mouth finds my neck. His tongue circles my nipple at the same moment Ghost's mouth closes over the other, and the dual contact shatters something in my brain.

I cry out and the lights erupt in spiraling gold, synced to every sound leaving my mouth.

His real hand slides between my thighs. Ghost's avatar mirrors the movement. Fingers — real and phantom, layered, doubled — and the moan that rips out of me reaches both realities.

He works me with devastating precision until I'm shaking beneath him.

"Danny — I need you — please—"

His real hand leaves my thigh long enough to reach for the nightstand. Condom. I hear the foil tear, hear his breath catch as he rolls it on, and the seconds it takes feel like hours.

Then his weight settles between my legs — real weight, real heat, the solid press of his body against mine while Ghost's avatar mirrors the position in virtual silk.

He pauses at my entrance. I feel him there — hard, hot, the tip of him pressing just enough to make every nerve ending in my body scream forward. His forehead drops to mine on the mattress. His breath comes ragged against my lips.

"Look at me," he whispers. Real voice with no headset filter. Just him.

I open my eyes behind the visor and feel his gaze even though I can't see it. The intimacy of that — blind to each other, connected in two worlds, trusting the body to find what the eyes can't — makes my throat close.

He pushes inside me. Slow and one devastating inch at a time.

My mouth falls open. The stretch of him filling me — real, physical, undeniable — registers in my spine, my stomach, the backs of my thighs.

The game translates the movement into amplified sensation and the fullness doubles, triples, until I can't tell where his body ends and the simulation begins.

My back arches off the mattress. My hands grip his shoulders — real skin, real sweat, real muscle trembling with the effort of going slow when every line of his body is begging to let go.

He bottoms out and we both stop breathing. Connected in every way two people can be — his hips flush against mine, his chest pressing me into the sheets, the Love Room pulsing gold around our avatars while the real room holds nothing but the sound of our ragged breath.

"Move," I beg. "Danny, please move—"

His pace builds. My nails dig into his real shoulders while phantom silk pins my wrists. The layers collapse — game and reality, Ghost and Danny, Siren and Nora — until there's nothing left but the sound of his voice saying my name like it's the only word he knows.

The Love Room responds to everything. Lights pulse brighter—silk shifts beneath my avatar. The biometric sync feeds our arousal back in a loop that climbs and climbs and refuses to plateau.

His thumb finds my clit — real fingers, phantom pressure, doubled — and the orgasm rips through both worlds simultaneously.

My body convulses on the mattress. My avatar dissolves into light. The Love Room erupts in gold that matches the scream tearing from my throat, and Danny follows — shuddering in both places, his groan vibrating against my neck and through the headset until the sound fills every corner of existence.

The lights fade and the silk settles. I pull off the headset with trembling hands. Then his. We lie there skin to skin, wrecked beyond language.

"That," I whisper, "was not a video game."

"No." His voice is raw. "That was something else entirely."

The candle on the windowsill has burned to nothing. On the floor beside the mattress, our phones glow side by side. Echo Link hums in the background, processing data we forgot existed the moment the Love Room loaded.

Microphone access and biometric data. Every sound, every heartbeat and every whispered name that traveled through the headsets and fed into servers we've never seen.

The most intimate moment of our lives, captured in both worlds.

But Danny's arms are warm. And the apartment is quiet. And I fall asleep without looking at the phones.

Without wondering who else was listening.
