His Discarded Queen

Chapter 8

Ch. 8 / 30 Mar 17, 2026

[Soren’s POV]

The throne room is designed to inspire awe and fear in equal measure. It is, indeed.

I've never been here before. The House Nyx is spoken of in whispers, its royal court more legend than reality to most of us.

You don't get invited here unless the King himself wants you here.

But the summons came a few days ago, delivered by a vampire in silver and black with eyes that promised consequences if I ignored it.

"High Elder Silas Nyx requests your presence for a formal acknowledgment ceremony."

No explanation. No details. Just the date and time, and the unspoken understanding that refusal wasn't an option.

So here I stand among the assembled nobility, Diana beside me in her finest gown, both of us trying to project confidence while uncertainty gnaws at my gut. Around us, representatives from every vampire house that matter whisper speculation.

What acknowledgment? Whose claim is being recognized?

No one knows. That's what makes it dangerous.

The massive doors at the far end of the chamber swing open and silence crashes through the space. Every head turns. Every conversation dies.

A woman enters, flanked by guards in silver and black. She moves with the kind of grace that speaks of centuries of training, of absolute certainty in her right to be here. Her dress is deep midnight blue and her dark hair falls in elegant waves past her shoulders.

But it's the way she carries herself that makes my breath catch. The commanding presence. The power that radiates from her like heat, making lesser vampires instinctively step back to give her room.

I've never seen her before.

Except—

Something about the way she moves. The tilt of her head. The shape of her face as she draws closer.

No. It can't be.

The woman approaches the dais where the High Elder sits, and with each step, details become clearer.

Her skin has a luminous quality I've only seen in the oldest bloodlines—the kind that comes from pure, ancient power running through veins. Her eyes, when she lifts them to survey the chamber, hold depths that make me want to look away.

Those eyes land on me for just a moment and the world tilts.

I know those eyes. I've looked into them a thousand times over years of marriage. Watched them fill with hope, with hurt, with desperate attempts to be enough.

Tessa.

That's Tessa.

But it can't be. Tessa was small, powerless, barely able to influence human servants let alone command a room full of vampire nobility. Tessa was the foundling I pitied and married.

This woman—this powerful, luminous creature radiating ancient authority—cannot possibly be the same person.

Except she is.

Horror crawls up my spine as she stops before the throne, her posture perfect, her presence undeniable. She doesn't look at me again. Doesn't acknowledge my existence.

She simply bows with flawless formality, the gesture neither subservient nor arrogant—just precisely correct.

"Honored High Elder," she says, and her voice carries through the vast chamber without strain, without hesitation. "I present myself for acknowledgement."

High Elder Silas rises from his throne, stepping forward with deliberate purpose. His expression is not the neutral mask of political necessity I expected.

It's pride. Pure, undisguised pride.

"Let all assembled witness," his voice booms through the chamber, carrying the weight of absolute authority, "this is Tessa of House Nyx."

The name hits like a physical blow. Nyx.

Not D'Alessandro. Nyx.

"Blood of my blood," Silas continues, his voice resonating off ancient stone. "Heir to the royal House Nyx and born under the eclipse prophecy."

The chamber erupts. Gasps, shouts, the sudden surge of a hundred conversations trying to process what they've just heard. My vision swims and I stagger backward, my hand shooting out to grip Diana's arm for balance.

This can't be real. Tessa was nobody. Powerless. From a failing house with no bloodline worth mentioning.

That's what I was told. That's what everyone believed.

But looking at her now I see the truth. This is what she always was. What she was always meant to be.

And I cast her aside.

I married her, dismissed her, humiliated her in front of the entire vampire nobility, and announced my intention to replace her with someone "more suitable." I severed our bond—no, she severed it, but only because I drove her to it.

I let my family throw her out to die in the sunrise.

I didn't just betray my wife. I betrayed the daughter of High Elder Silas Nyx. The heir to the most ancient and powerful bloodline.

The Crown Vampire Princess.

Beside me, Diana has gone ashen. Her fingers dig into my arm, trembling.

"Soren," she whispers, and I hear the panic in her voice. "House Shadowmere… if we've made enemies of House Nyx…"

She doesn't finish. Doesn't need to. We both understand.

House Nyx can destroy us with a word. Can strip away our titles, our lands, our very existence if they choose. And we've given them every reason to choose exactly that.

Movement draws my eye back to the dais.

A man steps forward from behind High High Elder Silas's throne. I recognize him immediately—everyone does.

Sebastian Delmare. The Silver Death. The Elder Council's Enforcer and the most dangerous vampire alive.

He walks to where Tessa stands and places his hand on her shoulder. Not possessive. Protective. The gesture is small but unmistakable.

His silver eyes—those legendary, terrifying eyes—find mine across the chamber. The look he gives me is glacial. Promising. A warning and a threat wrapped into one cold stare.

"Additionally to the protection of House Nyx," Sebastian announces, his voice cutting through the chaos like a blade. "Her Highness Tessa is also protected specifically by House Nightfall."

The meaning is clear. Crystal clear.

‘Touch her again, harm her again, even think about threatening her, and you'll answer directly to me.’

To the Enforcer who's killed more vampires than most houses have members. Who can walk in daylight and wields power that makes some Elders nervous.

My legs feel weak. The chamber spins.

Tessa finally looks at me again. Just a glance, brief and dismissive, like I'm barely worth the effort of acknowledgment. There's nothing in her expression.

No anger, no triumph, no satisfaction at seeing me realize what I've lost.

Just... nothing.

Like I don't matter anymore. Like I never did.

She turns back to the King and the Enforcer, and I'm forgotten. Erased. Less important than the dust beneath her feet.

"I accept your acknowledgement," she says to High Elder Silas, her voice steady and sure. "And I claim my birthright as heir to House Nyx."
